o An executive summary, sometimes known as a

management summary, is a short document or section

of a document, produced for business purposes, that

summarizes a longer report or proposal or a group

of related reports in such a way that readers can

rapidly become acquainted with a large body of

material without having to read it all. It will usually

contain a brief statement of the problem or proposal

covered in the major document(s), background

information, concise analysis and main conclusions.

o It is intended as an aid to decision making by

managers and/or investors and has been described as

possibly the most important part of a business plan.

They must be short and to the point.

o A business overview is a stage of a business plan

where you explain your vision and goal(s) for the

new business venture. It gives the reader/investor a

clear understanding of how the business runs and

what the future plans of the business are. It also

states what the business needs so as to run effectively

and also how the business uses the invested capital.

o Your business overview tells about your business’

value, critical success factor, industry and your

contribution to local & national economy.

o Another name for business is firm, organization,

company, corporation, enterprise, establishment,

industry, factory, association and institution. Your

business starts from even the smallest idea you have.

THE BUSINESS OVERVIEW

o A marketing plan is a business document written for

the purpose of describing the current market

position of a business and its marketing strategy for

the period covered by the marketing plan.

Marketing plans usually have a life of from one to

five years.

o The purpose of creating a marketing plan is to

clearly show what steps will be undertaken to

achieve the business' marketing objectives.

o A typical small business marketing plan might

include a description of its competitors, the demand

for the product or service, and the strengths and

weaknesses from a market standpoint of both the

business and its competitors.

o Operational planning is the process of linking

strategic goals and objectives to tactical goals and

objectives. It describes milestones, conditions for

success and explains how, or what portion of, a

strategic plan will be put into operation during a

given operational period.

o Operational plans should establish the activities and

budgets for each part of the organization for the

business period, it should address four questions:

oWhere is your business now?

oWhere do you want your business to be?

oHow do you get there?

oHow do you measure your progress?

THE OPERATION PLAN

Page 16: Business Plan Basics by Yetunde Macaulay

o Your organizational plan should provide names and

professional descriptions of the owner (you) and other

officers your business will have. The description of each

member of your organization should explain what their

roles and responsibilities will be in your company, their

qualifications and what they have done previously.

Emphasize past business successes and key skills that will

help your current business succeed.

o A management plan is a blueprint for the way your

organization is run, both day-to-day and over the long term.

It includes the standard methods for doing various things --

handling money, dealing with the actual work of the

organization, addressing the way people in the organization

do their jobs -- and the overall philosophical and intellectual

framework in which these methods operate.

o Business risk is influenced by numerous factors, including

sales volume, per-unit price, input costs, competition, overall

economic climate and government regulations. It is important

for every business to identify the business risks that exist in

the environment in which it operates. You have to be able to

think about what could go wrong while running your

business, and what should be done to mitigate those risks in a

cost-effective manner.

o Your ability to meet your business demand and remain a

well-respected business is also a process of your business risks

analysis which can be scrutinized through a SWOT analysis.

o Note that external business risks stem from economic,

political, social, environmental, technological, and other

external conditions.
