As the new executive director of career services at the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, I am pleased to present our MBA Class of 2011. This recruiter guide contains all the information you will need to recruit and hire Katz MBAs and put them to work advancing the mission of your company. I believe the class of 2011 is one of our strongest yet.

By working closely with the admissions team and Katz faculty, the Career Services Center staff strives to ensure our students have the critical skill set and character necessary to be successful in the business world and in your organization. As a former corporate executive, I am focused on understanding and supporting your specific needs so we can match our MBAs with the right career and the right position at the right company.

We offer a diverse student mix in terms of pre-MBA work experience, ethnicity, and geographic makeup. A diverse student body generates the exposure to different experiences and backgrounds necessary

Katz MBA students gain experience through team-based projects, which prepare them to be contributing members of your organization.

The University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business combines talented individuals with experience in cutting-edge business philosophies and education to offer you highly skilled full-time and internship candidates with the ability to add value to your organization from day one.

Katz MBA students gain experience through team-based projects, which prepare them to be contributing members of your organization. In addition to acquiring team-building expertise, they realize the importance of group productivity and individual output. Katz students complete rigorous academic course work and develop strategic business viewpoints and technological and analytical problem-solving skills with the help of nationally recognized research scholars and educators.

The Career Services Center can arrange recruiting dates that accommodate your needs as well as those of Katz students. Recruiting for full-time candidates begins October 4, 2010, and ends December 10, 2010, for the fall semester. Recruiting for internship candidates begins (and resumes for full-time candidates) January 19, 2011, and ends April 22, 2011.

The Recruiting Process

The following is an overview of the on-campus recruiting process.

• The recruiter schedules a corporate presentation and/or an on-campus interview date (including choosing a scheduling option and making necessary arrangements) by logging in to the Katz recruiting Web site at https://katz-pitt-csm.symplicity.com/employers.

• The Career Services Center posts the corporate presentation on the Katz recruiting Web site, and students RSVP prior to the event.

• The recruiter submits position description(s) to be posted in the system at least four weeks prior to the desired interview date.

• The Career Services Center approves all position descriptions and creates an interview schedule. Positions typically are posted for a two-week period.

• At the end of the posting period, the Career Services Center forwards cover letters and résumés to the recruiter’s designated contact.

• The recruiter selects student candidates to interview and notifies the Career Services Center at least 10 days prior to the scheduled interview date.

• The Career Services Center notifies student candidates. The final schedule is posted in the system three days prior to the interview date.

Additional Recruitment Options The most direct and effective way to reach MBA students is through on-campus recruiting; however, here are some additional options to consider when you are looking to fill immediate openings:

• Job postings. Students or alumni can apply online or via an e-mail address you provide. Log in at https://katz-pitt-csm.symplicity.com/employers and post your open positions directly to our Web site. If you do not have an account, please visit the site to register.

• Résumé books. Résumé books are searchable at https://katz-pitt-csm.symplicity.com/employers, and the Career Services Center also partners with MBAFocus, https://www.mbaselect.com/pittsburgh.aspx. Both resources allow you to search résumés based on criteria such as industry and functional preferences, pre-MBA work experience, and undergraduate majors.

• Video conferencing. Please contact Charmaine Evans at 412-648-1510 or [email protected] for more information about video conferencing options.

On-Campus Recruiting

The Career Services Center is located in Mervis Hall, Suite 301 (see page 16 for directions and page 17 for a campus map). Upon arrival, you will receive your schedule and candidates’ résumés. The Career Services Center staff will be available to answer questions and assist you with any needs you have concerning the University, the Career Services Center, and/or Katz students. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

Lunch A Career Services Center staff member will be your host for lunch. Lunches are catered and typically are held from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m.

Student Evaluations We ask that you complete a brief evaluation of each student. A feedback form will be included with the packet you receive when you arrive on campus. A Career Services Center staff member will meet with you briefly at the end of the day to discuss the candidates.

Recruiting Katz MBAs (continued)

The race to attract and retain top MBA talent is becoming more intense every year, and having a strong presence on campus is critical to leading the pack. By participating in on-campus recruiting activities, such as corporate presentations and on-campus interviewing, your organization can gain a competitive advantage.

Who Should Present? Representatives of different levels of management within your organization can provide MBA students with a firsthand look at varying business viewpoints. These representatives include:

• Members of senior-level management, who can discuss strategic direction. Their presence also indicates a commitment to, and interest in, the school.

• Human resources representatives, who can describe the recruiting process from start to finish.

• Recent hires, especially Katz alumni, who can provide helpful insights concerning their career decision-making process and information on career tracks.

Corporate Presentations

Corporate presentations help to build student interest in your organization as well as give you the opportunity to interact with those who you may want to interview. MBA students want to learn about your company and the issues it’s facing as well as potential career paths; the recruiting process and what to expect during interviews; what qualities you are looking for in potential candidates; what it takes to succeed in the company and why; and information about the location, travel requirements, benefits, etc., of available positions.

Consulting Field Projects

Consulting Field Projects offer MBA students practical business experience prior to graduation while providing invaluable project assistance to participating businesses. Under the supervision of the world-class Katz faculty and in partnership with McKinsey & Company, students apply the tools and skills they learn in the classroom to solve real-world business problems as consultants to organizations ranging in size from innovative start-ups to Fortune 100 companies.

Student teams present their Consulting Field Projects as part of the prestigious McKinsey Cup Competition at the end of the term. If you are interested in getting a fresh perspective on an actual ongoing project in your organization, please contact Bud Smith at 412-741-6497 or [email protected].

Guest Speakers

Katz faculty members often seek out recruiting partners to serve as guest speakers and lend a functional perspective or present a business case that is relevant to their academic areas. Mock Interview Day

One of the most well-attended events on campus, Mock Interview Day allows participating recruiters to promote their companies to current MBA students before on-campus recruiting officially begins. In turn, students have the opportunity to interact with recruiters one on one while practicing their interview skills. After a mock interview, students receive invaluable feedback from their interviewers about their strengths and how they can improve. This feedback is just one of the many professional development components that the Career Services Center uses to help build stronger, more effective candidates for your future employment opportunities. The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business strives to create an environment in which exposure to diverse ideas and differences can generate true global thinking. One of its primary goals is to foster students’ ability to embrace diversity and work effectively with others.

Diversity gives every member of the school an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to succeed in a challenging and complex global business environment. Toward that end, Katz seeks to enroll men and women who represent different nationalities, ethnicities, religions, backgrounds, and political persuasions and who possess diverse pre-MBA work and/or military experience as well as exposure to other disciplines besides business.

In order to best prepare students to contribute to the ever-changing face of global business, Katz has sought to create a diverse student body by partnering with organizations that will assist Katz and its corporate partners with meeting their recruiting needs.

National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), Pittsburgh Chapter The Pittsburgh chapter assists Katz with identifying and referring candidates to the full-time MBA program.

Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), Pittsburgh Chapter The Pittsburgh chapter identifies and refers ALPFA members for admission to the full-time MBA program.

National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) Katz is a member of the NSHMBA University Partnership Program, which identifies and refers applicants to the full-time MBA program.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Katz has a tradition of recruiting qualified graduates from such HBCUs as Howard University, Hampton University, Morgan State University, Virginia State University, and Florida A&M University. Katz also actively recruits graduates of Cheyney and Lincoln universities in Pennsylvania.

Fattah Conference on Higher Education Chaka Fattah, a former state senator and current congressman representing Pennsylvania’s Second District, designed the two-day Fattah Conference on Higher Education in an effort to increase enrollment of underrepresented students in graduate and professional schools.

Minorities in Pittsburgh Conference Sponsored and planned by the Roberto Clemente Minority Business Association, the Minorities in Pittsburgh Conference provides corporations and Katz with direct access to top students with diverse backgrounds and majors.

KATZPORT The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business has an immigration attorney on retainer to facilitate the H-1B visa process for our international students. This attorney represents both the employer and the employee in the H-1B process.

Katz covers all attorney fees associated with filing for an H-1B visa.

Employers are responsible for the following required H-1B fees:

Standard Filing Fee: For the I-129 petition $320 ACWIA (Training) Fee: To fund training $1,500* of U.S. workersFraud Fee: Required for the initial $500 H-1B petition or to switch employers

Optional fee for premium processing: $1,000 Decisions are made within 15 business days.

*Employers with fewer than 25 full-time employees must only pay one-half of the required training fee, which is $750. The following are exempt from the training fee: primary or secondary educational institutions, institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations related to or affiliated with any institutions of higher education, a nonprofit organization that engages in established curriculum-related clinical training of students registered at any institutions of higher education, nonprofit research organizations, and governmental research organizations.

Employment Not Requiring Sponsorship

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is defined as employment that is an integral part of the student’s academic program or established curriculum and that provides hands-on practical work experience. Students must have completed one academic year before they are eligible to participate in a summer internship and can work off campus for more than 20 hours a week. They do not need to be enrolled in academic classes.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary full-time employment after a student’s graduation that is directly related to the student’s field of study. It requires authorization by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The standard OPT period is for a maximum of 12 months. A student must obtain permission from the University’s Office of International Services and receive an employment authorization document (EAD) from USCIS. Employment can begin upon receipt of the EAD.

There is NO cost to the employer for hiring international students for part-time or full-time CPT or OPT.

Employment Requiring Sponsorship

H-1B Visa The H-1B visa program is the primary method for employers to recruit and hire international students and professionals in specialty occupations to work in the United States. Typically, a worker can have an H-1B visa for an initial period of up to three years. However, the initial H-1B visa can be extended one time for a combined maximum of six years.

International students who are in the United States as an F-1 or J-1 student (nonimmigrant) are generally eligible to apply for student work authorization upon completion of their academic program or studies, provided that they secure the necessary authorization before beginning employment.
