Global research

Our faculty are among the leading researchers in their fields, so you can be sure that our teaching is underpinned by world-class research.

The Business School boasts one of the largest groups of operations management experts in the UK and is an international leader in logistics and supply chain management research.

We have established expertise in risk and insurance dating back to 1968 and our Centre for Risk and Insurance Studies (CRIS) is one of the world’s leading university centres for teaching and research in risk and insurance.

The Financial Services Research Forum (FSRF), hosted by the School for more than a decade, is widely acknowledged as the UK’s most inclusive body for advancing the understanding of financial behaviour and promoting the interests of consumers.

Responsible leadershipThe Aspen Institute has commended the School on its ‘truly extraordinary record of faculty research in business ethics and corporate social responsibility.’ The School’s International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ICCSR) is one of the foremost centres for research and teaching on sustainability and CSR in Europe and brings leading edge CSR education to our undergraduate students.

The School was one of the first 100 to sign the UN’s Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative to inspire and champion responsible management education, research, and thought leadership globally.

Business Ethics is a core subject on all our degree programmes as we aim to develop responsible business leaders.

Entrepreneurial approachOur Entrepreneurship division and the University of Nottingham Institute for Enterprise and Innovation (UNIEI) form one of Europe’s leading centres for entrepreneurship research and practice. In 2008, UNIEI established an Ingenuity Centre — a unique network of higher education, private, and public sector organisations to find solutions to actual business issues.

The School was also the first to offer a mainstream module on entrepreneurship for all first year undergraduates, which aims to encourage you to develop your own concepts and problem solving skills with mentoring support from entrepreneurs and a range of business experts.

Our undergraduates are UK champions in entrepreneurship and social enterprise. Our Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Nottingham team have been crowned UK champions for several years running, beating stiff competition from 30 top UK universities.

Unique international opportunitiesThe University of Nottingham is pioneering, with campuses in both China and Malaysia. It is also a founder member of Universitas 21, a worldwide partnership of universities that promotes global research links and offers international student exchange programmes.

Choosing one of our courses will give you the opportunity to study abroad during the second year of your course*. Our BA (Hons) Management Studies with French, German, or Spanish includes a year abroad at a partner institution and/or an approved industrial placement during the third year.

Many students also come from overseas, so you will all experience a rich variety of international perspectives from your peers.

*This does not apply to students studying BA (Hons) Management Studies with French, German, or Spanish who study abroad in year 3.

Career development opportunitiesNottingham graduates are highly regarded by recruiters and we facilitate national and international opportunities to help you develop your career. Our unique Employer Programme brings top graduate employers to the School to interact with you and to hold events that develop your professional and practical skills. Many offer summer work placements and prizes.

Our degrees

All courses in the Business School involve the study of organisations, their management, and the changing environment in which they operate. While the precise blend of subjects studied depends on the particular course, each degree prepares you for a career in business, management and finance, as well as developing your skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis, critical thinking, oral and written presentation, information technology and group working.

All courses also include modules studying the role of entrepreneurship in organisations and the majority consider the impact of business ethics on strategy formulation and decision-making.

The Business School offers a variety of single honours degrees. Although each of these courses has a particular focus, it is important to understand that all of our degrees are multidisciplinary and will share some common modules.

Whichever degree you choose, you will also have the chance to select a number of optional modules alongside your core subjects, enabling you to tailor your degree to your particular interests. The range of subjects is extensive and includes modules in accounting and finance, business law, entrepreneurship, marketing, information systems, organisational theory, operations management, industrial economics, strategic management,

human resource management, business ethics and travel and tourism. Options can also be selected from other schools in the University.

At Nottingham, you will study under a modular system, taking 12 modules each academic year, spread over two semesters. There are exams in January and May. You will also be expected to complete coursework throughout the academic year, some of which is likely to be group work. The basic medium of instruction is the lecture, with a variety of support teaching including tutorials, computer labs, example classes, case studies, presentations, and online support.

AccreditationFor those of you reading our BA (Hons) Finance, Accounting and Management and BA (Hons) Management Studies degrees you may be able to claim some exemptions from professional examinations with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales Professional Stage), and CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Certificate in Business Accounting.

BA (Hons) Finance, Accounting and ManagementThis course provides you with a comprehensive undergraduate education in finance and accounting, coupled with a fully integrated understanding of the theory and practice of management in different organisations. BA (Hons) Management Studies and BA (Hons) International Management±BA (Hons) Management Studies serves as an excellent foundation for a wide range of business and management careers. The course provides you with a broad, thorough, and fully-integrated education in the theory and practice of business management and sets out to provide you with an understanding of the way in which organisations might be made to operate more effectively.

You can choose to transfer onto the BA (Hons) International Management if you successfully complete the first year and meet the transfer criteria±. You will follow the Management Studies pathway, but spend the second year abroad at one of our overseas campuses or an international partner institution where you take comparable modules. You then return to Nottingham for your final year.

± Applying for BA (Hons) Management Studies will not automatically entitle you to transfer to BA (Hons) International Management; spaces are limited and qualifying criteria will apply.

• To be considered for a transfer and to attend one of our overseas campuses in China or Malaysia, you must pass all First Year modules by the relevant June Exam Board.

• To be considered for a transfer and to attend an international partner institution, you must pass all First Year modules and achieve an overall year average of 60% or over.

Due to timescales, decisions to transfer will be based on semester 1 performance in the first year.

Employability, skills and personal developmentProfessional development refers not only to your academic progression but also to the development of your employability skills.

As the Skills and Development Manager, my main aim is to ensure that you settle into the School as quickly and easily as possible and to understand what is expected of you during your course. I am heavily involved in your induction sessions in the first week and I will meet with you all in the compulsory orientation sessions in the second week. To support your transition into working independently at university I run the Study Skills Programme. Each week this will focus on a different skill including effective reading and note taking, presentations and group work, coursework preparation and essay writing, referencing and how to avoid plagiarism, critical analysis, and exam preparation. In addition to these formal sessions, you are more than welcome to book individual consultations with me when the need arises throughout your time at university.

In your first semester, the School runs an essay competition and the Deloitte Group Project competition to help you understand the standards you need to achieve to obtain a good degree. This competition also provides you with an opportunity to obtain feedback on your work before it counts toward any grades. The winners are also awarded with some very generous prizes!

I try to ensure that anyone who has an issue with their studies — or who just wants a chat and some reassurance — has someone approachable they can call on. I am available to see small groups or individuals on an appointment basis or, if my door is open, you can just drop in when passing and always be assured of a warm welcome.
