NAMUNGALWE HEALTH CAMP REPORT

Background

The decision to go for a community outreach at Namungalwe Health Centre was reached when we agreed at the

2014 Olwekobaano to offer free medical treatment to all districts in Busoga and partnered w ith the Busoga

Kingdom to work together. HRH Gologolo Partrick Izimba attended our four days Olwekobaano and shared how

his chiefdom was in need of the health services. Members of Busoga Yaiffe (a Ugandan-registered development

NGO) started a campaign on the Diaspora forum and agreed to offer a free health camp for two days.

Fundraising

As part of preparations for the Community Day, BY henceforth mobilised its members and associates, both in

Uganda and in the Diaspora, to contribute towards the event. Contributions were continuously announced and

updated through BY’s online fora in a transparent and accountable way. They included cash, pledges and in -kind

contributions. A summary of the contributions as well as expenditure is available at the end of thi s report.

Busoga Yaiffe wishes to express its utmost thanks and appreciation to all those who so selflessly contributed to

the fundraiser and responded in various ways to the need at Namungalwe Health Camp.

Logistics

The Vice President together with some other members went to Iganga a few days before the event as an

advance team to make preparations on the ground and to co-ordinate with Dr David Muwanguzi- DHO and the

district administrative staff. Through all these preparations, the leaders of the team were impressed by the high

level of commitment and the sacrifice shown by volunteering members. The VP was in constant touch with the

Prime Minister Busoga Kingdom and President of the organisation, who is currently abroad, but who

competently guided and advised using ICT. The President also co-ordinated international activities and eventual

further discussions with event partners.

Sugar, High blood pressure, dental care, eye treatment, family planning, cancer screening, Malnutrition, Health

Education, male circumcision, HIV/AIDS testing and counselling and a cleaning exercise in the hospital and to

distribute the Tooke Porridge packets to more than 350 patients. The camp was supported by Alshafa Modern

Hospital, Mulago Basoga Medical students Assocation, Rotary-Iganga, Aids Information Centre (AIC),

Iganga/Namungalwe Health Centre, supported by Dr David Muwagunzi of Iganga Hospital. It was visited by

about 7660 outpatients from Namungalwe and around Iganga District.

Emergency needs at the Health Center III

1. Lobby for Centre upgrade to IV such they can get Doctor.

2. The Health centre doesn’t have electricity.

3. Emergency water running system as they wait for government long term intervention.

4. An additional children and female ward to cater for overwhelming community

Broader solutions

At a broader level, we feel there is need for a much stronger proposal to deal not only with the problems of

Namungalwe Health Centre III, but also those of the wider health system in Busoga. The evidence we gathered

as part of the community event and our wider interaction with national and local government offi cials will go a

long way in forming this proposal.

Conclusions

Busoga Yaiffe is delighted to have contributed toward sensitising government and the public about an alarming

and despicable situation at Namungalwe Health centre III. As an organisation, we have made valuable

experience in managing such a highly publicised initiative. We feel confident to be able to work even more

strongly with government, the public, our partners and our members in finding lasting solutions to

developmental questions in Busoga and Uganda at large. The positive reception we especially got at Health

centre by DHO, from the Kigulu chiefdom and the support we had from government convinces us that there is

room for a strategic partnership going forward to solve even bigger problems. The missing gap in

communication between politicians at all levels in Iganga, the community and the government if dealt with can

help bring the community together for ease of service delivery in Iganga and the good of the entire Busoga

region.
