ELECTRIC OPTAREFOR NOTTINGHAM THE next milestone in Nottingham’s electric

bus project was marked on 12th June 2014 at Queens Drive Park and Ride when Transport Minister Baroness Kramer visited the site The visit marked the electric bus network’s extension onto the Medlink service and the establishment of the Queens

Drive Park & Ride site as a demonstration ‘Eco Hub’. The first stage of the electric bus project has successfully operated for over a year, with four fully electric Optare buses used on Cen-trelink, operated by Trent Barton from Broadmarsh Bus Station, and four electric buses used on the Locallink services run by Nottingham Community Transport. This latest stage of the project sees a further £5 million to put 17 Optare electric buses into operation by Community Transport on Medilink followed by further Locallink services in autumn 2014. The final stage will see another 11 Optare electric buses on the high frequency Citylink Park and Ride services to the city centre in autumn 2015. •

TEMSA MD9IN GERMANY

S ince June 7th two Setra vehicles have been de-ployed for Volainbus service to provide fast con-

nection between the city centre of Florence and the airport Amerigo Vespucci. The vehicles have a ca-pacity of 40 seats plus wheelchair and 34 standing passengers. The layout was customised for airport service requirements, hence the special attention to spaces and the onboard large luggage compartment allowing for quick and easy storage of hand luggage during the transfer. The Volainbus service is managed by Busitalia Sita North and is available 7 days a week, every day of the year. Starting June 1st the service has been enhanced with more frequent rides, more vehicles and extended hours thanks to the synergy between Busitalia and Florence Airport, a company which in 2013 saw 7.1% increase in passengers transport (historical record for Florence) and which in early 2014 is reporting growth by 8.4%. •

WITH SETRA TO THE AIRPORT

Regensburg, Germany. The vehicle is used to tran-sport the fire fighters to the training places and to excursions. The National fire service school Re-gensburg offers apprenticeship, advanced and fur-ther training in fire protection and emergency service of Bavarian fire brigade. They also prepare and perform civil protection exercises and support at fire fighters operations in their neighborhood. Their area covers a size of approximately 40,000 sqm. Each year the school educate around 4,200 fire fighters according to the latest technical knowledge •

IVECO EXPANSIONS IN SARDINIA

SIX months after opening the Muros branch, in the province of Sassari, Iveco Acentro

opens a new business centre in Sardinia. Located in Olbia, it is built on an area of 6,300 square metres, of which 1,500 are covered, and its operations focus on the sale of new and used vehicles, after-sales ser-

vices and spare parts. Besides Muros, the new location adds up to two operational branches in Cagliari and to the commercial offices in Nuoro, thus moving forward with the ambitious expansion project by CNH Industrial in the North of Sardinia. •

That’s a feature that is very important for the operator from Pied-mont. In this regard, it’s been a couple of years since Cavourese developed the ‘Drive Style Tool’ programme, in collaboration with the Polytechnic of Milan, with the aim of optimising the driving style of drivers. Results show 8% savings in fuel consumption. The programme also rewards drivers that achieve the best results in terms of fuel economy. •

*) Anfia estimate, based on data of the Italian Ministry of Transport.

Germany, France and the UK are the engine of the European bus market whereas Italy and Spain struggle to follow. First four months results

After a negative start (-8.8% in January) the European bus market ends positively

the following months, increasing by +20,4% in April. Overall, the first four months of 2014 recorded an increase by 5.6% in the EU (+5.9% including the EFTA three), exactly double the growth recorded in 2013 (+2.8%).The picture that comes from data published by ACEA is rather positive but looking at the situation of each member state things are not always as fine. If some countries confirm a growth trend, others experienced setback.

Among the biggest markets, the leading trio, which on its own it is worth 60% of the EU market, continues to grow in the first four months of the current year: +4.4% France (in 2013 it was +14.9%); +8.6% Germany (+13.3% in 2013) and +6.8% the UK (in 2013 it settled to -3.9% after the outstanding achievements of 2012).A setback instead is reported from Italy, where market volumes experience a decre-ase. Whereas the halving of the market as suffered in the past four years gave

way to a sign of recovery in 2013 (+11.5%), it is al-most back down to zero considering current results (-9.4% between January and April).A similar situation is taking place in Spain, where the downward slope had come to a halt in 2013 (+0.4%) but is now back again (-3.4% in the first four months). On another front, it seems that Poland is well un-derway, reporting +18% re-sults in the aftermath of the +9% in 2013. Unlike Swe-den, which decreases 57.6 percentage points on top of the 24.9 lost in 2013.In the ranks of the markets that are worth less than 1,000 buses, there are inte-resting reaffirmings of po-sitive trends in the Czech Republic (+24.3% added to +21.9% in 2013) and in Hungary (+33.9% now and +747 in 2013). Roma-nia continues to experience a downsize of the market with a loss of -43.3% after the decrease by -40.9% in 2013. •

THE bus fleet of the city of Cagliari will be renewed with the intro-

duction of 14 new vehicles. German company Vossloh-Kiepe bid for the tender and was awarded the contract for the supply of trol-leybuses built by Belgium company Van H o o l . T h e model is the A 330T in the size of 12 me-tres.The vehicles are powered by a 160 kW asynchronous motor equip-ped with an auxiliary drive system com-prised of a die-sel-generator set with an electric power of 100 kW.These trolleybuses are characterised by the reduced weight of the traction equipment and by the recovery of braking energy, features that contribute to a considerable reduction of energy consumption and that have a positive

environmental impact.Similar trolleybuses have already been built by Van Hool in partnership with Vossloh Kie-pe for delivery to the cities of Lecce, Bari and Chieti where they are currently in servi-

ce. Others will be delivered to Avellino shor-tly.Regarding Ca-gliari, the con-tract for the delivery of the 14 trolleybuses was s igned last May by Consorzio Tra-sporti e Mobi-lità (CTM) and has a value of almost € 7.2 million.Deliveries are

scheduled for the middle of next year.CTM operates a fleet of 235 diesel drive buses and 29 trolleybuses. Annual mileage amounts to about 12.5 million km in and around the city, of which 1.5 are driven by solo trolleybuses within a 39 km long overhead contact line system. •

RIO de Janeiro took delivery of 124 Volvo buses for the local BRT sy-

stem (Bus Rapid Transit) just in time for the 2014 World Cup.They are 124 articulated buses from the Vol-vo B340M series. The vehicles are 21 metres long and can transport up to 180 passengers, that is 20% increased capacity compared to similar buses ope-rating on Rio lines. The vehicles, which are bodies by Neo-bus and Marcopolo, are equipped with automatic gearbox, disk brakes, elec-tronic brake con-trol system (EBS) and intelligent ac-celeration control system, an exclusi-ve feature by Volvo to further reduce fuel consumption. The 124 buses operate on Transcarioca, the new 39 km long BRT corridor that opened in June.Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in Gothenburg Sweden, the new Volvo ‘Zone Management’ technology is being te-

sted on Volvo’s electric hybrid buses that have been operating for the past year. It is a solu-tion that enables the automatic switch to elec-tric power and to low speed drive in sensitive areas. GPS is used to determine exactly where the bus should run on electricity or diesel, and how fast it may drive in various zones. That is, without the driver’s intervention.

The testing is part of the ‘City Mobility’ programme by Vol-vo for helping cities to switch to more sustainable public transport. This te-chnology will be te-sted in Volvo’s elec-tric hybrid buses in 2014 and 2015 and should be fully de-veloped in 2016. •

tude of 3,700 meters. Its unpredi-ctable climate and 40 percent less oxygen pose extreme challenges for vehicle reliability and perfor-mance. The 12-meter automatic buses, the first from China to ope-

rate on the Tibetan Plateau, have won high praise for reliabi-lity and durability in Lhasa, with no record of breakdowns. Allison’s Continuous Power Technology enables automatic buses and their 280 hp engines to run smoothly on the plateau, significantly improving comfort. Providing smooth, powerful braking through a unique hydraulic output, retarder reduces vehicle brake wear lowering maintenance costs. Through advanced electronic controls, Allison transmissions reduce fuel consumption while protecting both the engine and the driveline, prolonging a vehicle’s life. In addition, Allison tran-smissions provide easy maneuverability to minimize driver training. •

IN early June, the Paris Expo in Paris opened its doors to the 2014 edition

of Transports Publics, the biennial event spe-cifically dedicated to public transport issues in its various forms, both in terms of road and rail transport. The event’s calendar was packed with discus-sion meetings organised by sector associations (FNTP, UTP, ASSTRA, GART), Transport Companies (RATP, SFR, STIF) and research institutes (CEREMA), with the aim of encou-raging analysis as well as concrete proposals to increase sustainable and intermodal public transport. These participants took up a large part of the exhibition area, as did companies focusing on solutions for the management and optimisation of transport services. All together they outnumbered suppliers of bus components.Regarding vehicles per se, on top of the most important names in the rail sector (featuring scale models), in many cases the display of

In Paris the offers by French manufacturers. Except for Iveco Bus and Daimler Buses, there was only a symbolic presence from the part of important international brandsbuses was rather symbolic considering the full range of manufacturers’ products. That was the case for some of the most important international bus manufacturers that exhibited one vehicle only. With the exception of Iveco Bus and Mer-cedes/Setra that displayed a wide range of vehicles.

Urbanway Hybrid and BHNSIn particular, Iveco Bus showcased the new player in the important tender won for RATP

in Paris (1,000 buses in three years). The city of Paris made the political decision to focus on alternative fuels (hybrids and CNG) for all future bus purchases. Powered by a hybri-d-series traction drive, the Urbanway 18 can transport up to 170 passengers. It features im-proved performance and better fuel economy compared to the previous Citelis Hybrid mo-del, also thanks to the use of second genera-tion “Arrive & Go” function which activates automatically when approaching and depar-ting from bus stops (and at red traffic lights),

switching to “full electric mode” for a distan-ce of about 60 metres.Another world premiere presence was the 12 metres Urbanway for BHNS systems (French acronym for BRT systems, Bus Rapid Tran-sit), that will also be available in the 18 me-tres version shortly. Designed for BHNS, the Crealis Euro VI, currently just a scale model, will be introduced in 2015.And finally, on display there was also the 10.8 metres long Crossway LE homologated as a city bus, with new ergonomic dashboard and driver seat pivoting to 65 degrees.

Heuliez’s own undertakings HeuliezBus, the other French operation of Iveco Bus, located at the adjacent exhibit spa-ce, showcased the 18 metres GX 437 HYB (hybrid-series), with 160/200 kW electric mo-tor, 6.7 litre FPT Euro VI diesel engine, 200 kW generator, 11 kWh lithium-ion batteries, braking energy recovery system and ‘Stop

The model on display fe-atured three doors, 42 seats, wheelchair area and 110 standing passengers capacity.Alongside there was the 12 m diesel GX 337 (also available in the hybrid version), with 286 hp Tector engine (210 kW). At the third door there is a raised platform to the left side with seats raised on high bases with two steps.

French premieres At the event in Paris, Daimler Buses sought to reaffirm the strength of its record-breaking production results: over 1,000 Citaro Euro VI buses in service throughout Europe; over 40 thousand Citaro buses delivered since 1997; over 20 thousand Mercedes minibus delive-red since 1998 and over 15 thousand vehicles over 8 tonnes manufactured in France, in Li-gny-en-Barrois.

On display there was a Citaro G version specifi-cally fitted for BRT transport, already chosen by major cities

such as Nantes, Mar-seille, Saint-Nazaire, Strasbourg

and Dubai. Deep side windows, glass roof, Ruspa Citipro translucent seats and wood-ty-pe flooring are combined with an unusual front end design and a passenger information system with eight screens that can display va-rious types of content. French premiere for the 10.6-metre Citaro K Euro VI on exhibit with three doors, with a capacity of up to 87 seats, bright interior fittings such as, also in this case, glass roof and other equipment si-milar of the Citaro G BRT.Representing the range of Euro VI minibuses, there was a 7.7 m Sprinter City 65, with lar-ge low-floor area between the axles and with three steps on the second door in the rear. The Setra brand showcased the Multiclass S 416 UL intercity bus in the economic ‘bu-siness’ version (available in France starting next August). Available in three lengths, the vehicle seen in Paris was the 12.7 metres ver-sion with double door at the centre, wheel-chair lift, 354 hp Euro VI engine (260 kW), ZF automatic transmission and 55 seats.

Breda’s focus on electricBredaMenarinibus brought to Paris the Vi-vacity and Zeus models with the intent to carve some room in the French market star-ting with short size and alternative fuel buses. There are already twenty short size (5.9 me-tres) Zeus electric busesin service in France in the fleet of BE Green, a company specialising in 100% environment friendly transport services. The vehicle on di-splay was part of a supply order of 10 electric buses for the city of Toulouse. It is powered by an electric motor with an output of 30/60 kW and 288 V/200 Ah batteries with a total capacity of 69 kWh. BusToCoach on-line Magazine - July-August 2014

New Daily, the latest generation in the Iveco commercial vehicles range, introduced. Main product

features and close up look at the minibus range

T hirty-six years of production, three edi-tions, 2.6 million vehicles sold worldwide

in over 110 countries. These are the numbers (very impressive numbers...) of the Daily, the commercial vehicle of the Iveco range that received a fresh restyling. After its debut in 1978, the model was renewed in 1999 and today, June 2014, it is available in its third evolutionary stage. The operation entailed an investment of €500 million. So, here it is, the latest generation Daily, completely renewed and with 80% of com-ponents redesigned with the exception of its DNA: the classic ladder frame chassis struc-ture synonymous with sturdiness, versatility and durability.Exterior design has improved to combine elegance and functionality reflecting the new outlook of the Iveco brand family. The new style also enhanced vehicle aerodynamics (Cx reduced by 6%).A more comfortable interior was achieved by reorganising the interior compartment, a lar-ger glazed area, improved sound insulation and a more efficient air conditioning system. The driver’s experience is more and more si-milar to that of driving an automobile thanks

to the driver’s seat and dashboard. In fact the cab interior has been completely redesigned to improve ergonomics. Volume capacity of the van has been optimised to provide 20 m³ for improved load space abilities and better

accessibility. In terms of performance, it features impro-ved driveability and manoeuvrability thanks to the new architecture with longer wheelba-ses and reduced rear overhang and thanks to

the new Quad-Leaf front suspension (standard on all models up to 3.5 ton-nes) based on a double quadrilateral arrange-ment with traverse leaf springs. Single-wheel models (thus excludi-ng minibuses) feature a redesigned rear suspen-sion.Another strength of the New Daily model is re-duction in fuel consu-mption that decreased on average by 5%, and up to 14% with the use of EcoPack, a package which includes features such as Smart Alter-nator for the recovery of kinetic energy from

the vehicle during release or EcoMac which optimises the operation of the compressor ac-cording to the actual passenger compartment cooling requirements.Other safety features include ESP (standard) and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) that emits an acoustic warning when the vehi-cle departs from the marker lines of a lane. The Daily range includes van, semi-window vans, chassis cabs, chassis crew cabs, chas-sis cowls and minibus versions. It is offered in over 8000 different combinations between the chassis, engine and the mechanical parts.

Also, it is offered in six gross vehicle wei-ght variants (from 3.3 to 7 tons), two engines (2.3 and 3 litre) with a choice of nine power outputs (106 to 205 hp) and diesel fuel (Eu-ro5b+ with EGR or Euro VI with a mixed EGR + SCR system) or compressed natural gas.In addition to the improvements that regard the entire range and the introduction of a new production line entirely dedicated to mi-nibuses at the Suzzara Iveco plant (fully au-tomated), the main new features for the mini-bus segment consist of more modern interiors

and the 6.1 tonne version with a longer 4,100 mm wheelbase that fits 22 passenger seats plus guide (top-of-the-range) and with a 30% additional space in the luggage compartment. The Daily minibus is offered by Iveco Bus in four configurations. The Line version inten-ded for interurban route services or as school bus, available in three different lengths with capacity of up to 22 passengers. The Tourys is the touring bus version with all new floor and ceiling trim, LED lights and individual clima-te control vents. The Citys version exclusively designed for city and suburban transport, with double central door and rear door with ramp for passengers on wheelchair. And, finally, the

Daily Pop, that is the school bus dedicated to the Italian market with maximum capacity of 45 passengers for primary school and 32 for high school. They are all available with 170 hp Euro VI en-gine with a displacement of 2,998 cm³, Unijet common rail injection, with VGT aspiration variable geometry turbocharger and EGR + SCR exhaust after-treatment for exhaust gases plus particulate filter. The Daily Citys 50C is also available in the CNG engine version, transformed to Otto Cycle with stoichiometric injection. In addition to vans with capacity of up to 20 cubic meters, bodybuilders can opt for the chassis cowl and the light chassis cowl ver-sions (no body parts also at the front) that allow for minibus equipment with a total wei-ght of 7,200 kg, therefore with the option to fit up to 30 seats. •
