BusToCoach on-line Magazine - September 2019 The manufacturer is collaborating with several partners to the STAR project for the development of a bus without driver IT will measure 12 meters, it will be able to carry about a hundred passengers safely and achieve a speed of up to 40 km/h. It is the first autonomous bus designed by Ive- co. The vehicle is currently under develop- ment as part of the STAR project with which Iveco Bus is colla- borating with other partners: Easy Mile, solution provider for driverless vehicles, Ifsttar (for the acces- sibility to people with reduced mobility), In- ria (for the perception and obstacle avoi- dance on high-speed roads), Isae-Supaero (for localization), Michelin (for the smart tyres), Sector (for the security and risk management) and Transpolis (for the validation tests). In November 2017 all the partners in the project received the approval of the French Unique Interministerial Fund (FUI) with the support of the CARA and Aerospace Valley competitiveness clusters. For its part in the project, Iveco Bus will receive a subsidy from the Auvergne-Rhône-Rhône-Alpes Region. "This research and development project will allow us to understand the constraints of a driverless operation”, stated Iveco Bus, “as well as testing in real conditions an autono- mous bus of level 4, the last step before total autonomy”. The vehicle will initially circulate in restri- cted areas or on de- dicated tracks to then integrate into the flow of normal traffic. Iveco Bus has been working for years in the development of driver assistance sy- stems. In addition to the optical guidance for the precision when pulling up at stops, Iveco buses offer nu- merous technical advancements that improve safety and represent the first steps towards autonomous driving. Iveco Bus has also experimented with the so-called smart garage, “a solution based on the principle that buses equipped with appropriate sensors can park themeselves in the depot, wi- thout human intervention. This option offers the advantage of a quicker manoeuvre and saving in time and space. Fuelling and washing can also be carried out in fullly autonomy”.
