A Letter From the BoArd ChAir
Annual Dinner Welcome by Chair of the Boardt wasn’t all that long ago that I wanted to become more involved in the Butler County scene. In 2005 when I was Vice President for Academic Affairs at Butler County Community College, I volunteered as a college participant
for Leadership Butler County. I met tons of great people in Leadership. I also learned more about the Butler County Chamber of Commerce, its affiliates and our wonderful county as a whole.
Fast forward to today. Not only have I served as proud President of BC3 since 2007, I have served on the Chamber Board of Directors during this time. And this year, I am Board Chair of the Chamber. Frankly, the experience has been both daunting and even humbling. Look at the list of past Chamber Presidents in your program. Talk about a Who’s Who of Butler County?
We put forth an aggressive agenda for the Chamber back in January. Please consider the following 2011 Chamber goals and what we have done to accomplish them:
Provide more educational offerings.
With the cooperation of BC3 and Penn State University, we offered one of the best and most well attended series of Marcellus Shale Seminars in the region.
A Sandler Sales Training Series has proven to be widely attended as we offer additional “tricks of the trade” to enhance opportunities for business owners.
Open the lines of Communication.
We have done so by meeting with other Chamber of Commerce leadership teams, including a meeting at our office with 12 regional Chambers of Commerce to discuss a collective advocacy and information resource council. We have either held or will hold four joint “Meet-N-Move” networking luncheons with area Chambers of Commerce and three membership mixers with area Chambers. We conducted the Butler County Commissioner Candidates Debate in the spring at BC3, in cooperation with the Zelienople / Harmony Area Chamber of Commerce and THE CHAMBER, Inc.
Expand information-sharing opportunities.
We have taken three of our monthly Board meetings on the road to learn more about our members. Our Board has held meetings at BC3, Concordia Lutheran Ministries, the Community Health Clinic of Butler County and The Butler Eagle. Butler Memorial Hospital will host an upcoming meeting. Invited guests share news about their organizations at the start of each our Chamber Board meetings and engage our Directors in their projects.

Attendance by the Board of Directors is 90 percent.
Each Chamber event, committee, affiliate and program has at least one Board member participating. Directors have been at the forefront in major sponsorships on all levels, and consistently provide not only time and expertise but financial support as well.
Strategically utilize our Past Presidents and Board Chairs.
They continue to provide key insights and suggestions about how we can become a better Chamber. They have assisted with sponsorships and even past-unpaid dues collections.
Their interest and loyalty has been a valuable resource in the development of future successes while building on past endeavors.
And the good news is we still have three months to accomplish even more!

63rd season begins with Beethoven for the
Butler County Symphony

he Butler County Symphony Orchestra announces A Night Of..., a revitalizing 63rd season of classic symphonies, expressive operatic arias, and exciting contemporary works. Promising enough variety to speak to every ear, the Butler
County Symphony Orchestra (BCSO) prepares for a new era of Great Live Music.
On October 8, 2011, Maestro Thomas Hong, currently Assistant Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony, conducts the inaugural concert of the new season, “A Night of Beethoven”. The concert features “Egmont Overture”, “Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 2”, and “Symphony No. 8 in F”, and “Les Preludes” by Liszt. Immediately following the concert, a “Butler Beethoven Bash” reception allows the audience an opportunity to meet Mr. Hong and orchestra members. Local actor Phillip Ball portrays the creative genius, Beethoven, throughout the evening.
November 5, 2011 welcomes Maestro Bruce Lauffer as he conducts this concert featuring Alvin Zhu, pianist. Mr. Lauffer is currently Music Director and Conductor of the McKeesport Symphony Orchestra. This concert will be Mr. Zhu’s second appearance with the BCSO. This “Night of Favorites” includes “Light Cavalry Overture,” by von Suppe, Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto 3 in C,” “Night On Bald Mountain” by Mussorgsky, and “1812 Overture” by Tchaikovsky.
Maestro Matthew Kraemer, currently the Associate Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic, leads the orchestra in “A Night of Joy” on December 3, 2011. Holiday music includes “Canadian Brass Christmas,” “The Feast of Lights” by Samuel Adler, “Christmas A La Valse” by Wendel, “Fantasia on Christmas Carols” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Sleigh Ride”, and “Joy to the World”. Joining the BCSO as soloist for this performance will be the Slippery Rock University Choir Director, Dr. Stephen Barr.
On February 11, 2012, Maestro Lauffer returns to conduct “A Night of Song.” International and Metropolitan Opera star, Michael Forest, tenor, is the featured guest artist. Selections include “Portsmouth Point: An Overture” by Walton, “English Folksong Suite” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, a Mozart concert aria, and vocal music from George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. The evening also includes a medley of Stephen Foster audience favorites.
“A Night of Beginnings” on March 10, 2012, features the BCSO Young Artist Competition Winner, high school age, and returning guest conductor Maestro Hong. The program includes “Academic Festival Overture” by Brahms, Copland’s “An Outdoor Overture”, the “Wizard of Oz Orchestral Suite”, “A Hollywood Salute” by Wendel, and “Danzon No.2” by Marquez.
“A Night of Remembrance” is the theme of the last concert of the season on April 14, 2012. Aaron Patterson, alto saxophone soloist and 2002 winner of the BCSO Young Artist Competition, performs “Sonata in C# for Saxophone and Orchestra” by Decruck under the baton of Maestro Kraemer. “The Pearlfishers Overture” by Bizet and “Titanic” by Peter Boyer are included in the program, as well as Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”.

BEAUTIFICATION AWARD
G ood things are happening in downtown Butler and we want to join in celebrating it! Butler Downtown is seeking nominations of businesses, homeowners, or neighborhood
groups who have made an extra effort to beautify and improve an area or property in the downtown district of the City of Butler. In appreciation of their efforts to make our city cleaner and greener they will be presented with a Downtown Beautification Award.
To receive the award, the individual or group should have made an “extra effort” from January 2010 to present to improve a property within the downtown Butler area by remodeling, painting, landscaping, or maintaining the building and/or surrounding property. This is not a competition. It is an effort to recognize and thank those who are contributing to the revitalization of our community. “Over the last year or so, a lot of remodeling has taken place in our downtown,” says Steve Newcaster, Butler Downtown Design Committee Chair. “We want to thank all the owners who have made improvements to their properties, and hope that groups, businesses, and property owners will also nominate themselves for this award.”
Each submission will be judged on its own merit by the members of the Butler Downtown Design Committee. The award will be presented at Butler Downtown’s Annual Public Meeting on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Butler’s Grand Ballroom.

J A programs are delivered by corporate and community volunteers who share their skills and personal and professional experiences to make learning come to life. To run programs in the
Butler community, JA currently needs the assistance of 250 community volunteers who deliver programs to over 6,000 students.
The Butler County Junior Achievement Leadership Board is looking for individuals who are excited to share their life experiences with students from all over the county. Volunteering is fun, easy, and convenient. JA provides the training and materials, and you add your real-world spin.

he American Red Cross and Butler County Humane Society will host their 2nd Annual Helicopter Ball Drop on Saturday October 22, 2011, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at The Hotel Beacon located in Penn Township. An amazing site, WPXI’s Chopper 11 will
drop 1,000 golf balls onto a field from high in the sky. The ball closest to the hole or first one in the hole will win $1,000.
In conjunction with The Hotel Beacon’s annual fall celebration, this family friendly event will also include activities for the kids before and after the golf ball drop. Come by and paint a pumpkin, take the kids through the corn maze or enjoy several other family events. For $10 the ticket holder has a chance at winning $1,000. There will be other 50/50 and basket raffles including a chance to win a Steelers Basket with 4 game tickets, $100 gift card to the Steelers Store and other Steelers gear.

The new First National Bank branch is located in a heavy retail area across from the Veteran’s Administration Hospital and adjacent to retailers including Target, Chili’s and Walmart. T here was electricity in the air on September 14, 2011 at the Butler Country Club when close to 300 guests (our largest attendance ever), representing 90 member businesses gathered to honor three
Butler County Businesses for achievements deserving of recognition. Presenting the William A. Morgan, Jr. Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 award was 2006 award winner Lee Ligo of Ligo Architects, our premier dinner sponsor. Lee reflected on the great accomplishments Butler County entrepreneurs have made not only on our region but also internationally. Tom Graham graciously accepted this honor, thanking his family and employees who contributed to his success.
Ken DeFurio, President and CEO of Butler Health System and last year’s Chamber Business Champion Award Recipient presented the 2011 Chamber Champion Award to Jack Cohen and the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau. His agency has grown since it’s founding in 2001 into the number one marketing and promotional voice for our county, bringing millions of dollars of revenue into our area. The Bantam Jeep Festival 2011 exceeded all expectations, and Jack predicted that the Pyrotechnics
Guild International Convention in 2013 will overwhelm all others.
General Manager of the Butler Eagle, Ron Vodenichar, Chamber Champion 2010 Award Recipient, presented the second 2011 Chamber Champion Award to Cathy Glasgow and Butler County Ford. Connections and community involvement were quickly evident, as anecdotes and personal commentary were injected into the presentations. Cathy thanked her family for the opportunities and support, and her staff for assisting in their success. As a female in a male dominated profession, Cathy has risen to a level of excellence that we can all be proud of.
Board Chair Dr. Nick Neupauer reflected on his term and the diversity of activities and outreach that our chamber has achieved. He presented a certificate of appreciation to Past Chair Brenda Lemmon for her service and dedication to our Chamber. It was a perfect evening, as the photos depict, celebrating our past achievements, connecting with those present and recognizing their achievements and providing a brief glimpse into our bright and progressive future.

final summer mixer sponsored by C. W. Howard Insurance Agency, Moses Jewelers and Consolidated Communications. Guests had the chance to win prizes donated by the three sponsors and by SiBA Restaurant. As you can see from the photos, it could not have been a more perfect way to say good bye to summer.

hree chambers of commerce partnered on September 7, 2011 at the Legacy Banquet Center in Grove City to meet and discuss national issues with Congressman Mike Kelly. Sponsored by the United States Chamber of Commerce, over 60 business members
from the Butler County, Grove City Area and Meadville-Western Crawford County Chambers of Commerce met for breakfast and discussion. Topics ranged from international trade to Marcellus Shale as Congressman Kelly offered his views on our federal government and national condition. Always frank and open, those in attendance agreed that it was informative and indicative of his accessibility and knowledge of government issues, as well as the needs of his constituents in our area. We jointly thank the United States Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring this event, and appreciate the cooperation and collective planning of the area chambers of commerce.
