BUTTOCK IMPLANT
SURGICAL NAMEGluteal augmentation
COMMON NAMEButtock implant surgery
Butt implant
INTRODUCTIONButt implants are intended for men and women who would like more curves and/or a well-balanced physique.
This can improve an individual’s buttock contour by creating a fuller shape. Buttock implant surgery, like
breast implant surgery, places artificial implants in-between gluteal muscle to enhance the size and shape of
the buttocks. However, this surgery doesn’t aim to widen the hips.
SURGICAL PROCEDUREDuring the surgery, implants are placed through an incision made either where the cheeks meet the back of
the thigh or in the buttock crease (where scars are not as noticeable). The surgeon then creates a pocket large
enough to place the implants. Your surgeon will advise you on the most suitable procedure for you. Once
placed, the surgeon confirms that each cheek is symmetrical and looks natural. The incisions are closed and
a compression garment is applied.

BUTTOCK IMPLANT
PRE-OPERATIVE CAREBefore surgery, please inform your surgeon of any allergies, all medical conditions, and any medication that
you are taking (both prescription and non-prescription). To eliminate the chance of post-op bleeding, you
should avoid aspirin and blood thinning medication such as Brufen for 2 weeks prior to surgery. You should
also not smoke for 4 weeks before surgery as smoking can affect your reaction to anesthetic and slow down
the healing process. Patients that suffer from hypertension must inform the surgeon prior to surgery.
In your consultation, you should discuss your expectations of the outcome of the surgery and listen to the
surgeon’s opinion. You will probably be required to send photos to the surgeon prior to the consultation.
This will enable the assessment and also serve as a reference following surgery.
POST-OPERATIVE CARE AND RECOVERY EXPECTATIONSButtock implants will have a moderate amount of post-operative discomfort and will feel very tight right after
surgery. Take your pain medications as needed. Significant swelling will occur in the first few days making
your buttock feel even tighter. There will be a taped dressing / bandages on your lower back to cover the
incision. The tapes are to be left in place to serve both as a dressing and reinforcement of the incision. You
will probably be able to resume exercise and normal physical activities within a month or two after any
residual soreness has subsided. While you still have butt implants, please avoid puncture or injection in the
butt area.
RESULTSButtock augmentation patients typically can return to quiet, low-intensity work within a week. Full recovery
may take several months.
RISKS AND COMPLICATIONSRisks are inherent to any surgical procedures. The most common risks include bleeding, infection and
scarring. Although the chances of these events happening is slim to none, they sometimes can occur. Other
complications can include capsular contracture and loss of sensation in the region. Capsular contracture
occurs if the capsule or shell around the implants begin to tighten and thicken. Should a problem arise, there
is a number of ways to correct the issue. Sometimes removal of the capsule is required, or perhaps the implant
may need to be replaced. However, this is uncommon if you follow your surgeon’s direction.
