By Athena Gonzalez We all eat toast as if it was just a stale form of bread. We wipe away it’s crumbs from our mouths without a second thought. But do you know what toast had to go through to make the snack you enjoy today?

It went from being a limp slice of ordinary bread to a super satisfying piece of toast. It had to go through an oven like toaster at high temperatures just so you wouldn’t discard it at a glance because it was bland-bread. Not to mention, if it was over toasted and became black as charcoal you would look at it with a face of disgust and omit it in the trash. Toast tries so hard to please you. Just like the 60’s scrunchies, if it doesn’t become perfection it doesn’t get a second thought. Toast will never live up to the fame of French fries but it does succeed in comparison to Brussels sprouts.

THINK ABOUT IT…

By Athena Gonzalez I await in the sour acid that I was put in at birth. One by one, I have all seen my friends die in the similar way that I will soon. My body feels lumpy and cold as if I was a rotten animal stuck in a freezer. I gaze up from my cylindrical room, and see what terrorized me in my dreams. The four spears held by the ugly, fleshy, giant come down to me. I begin to scream as they poke into my side. My inner juices squirt out of me as would a long-awaiting pimple finally popped. I soon arise from the transparent room like I was Jackie Chan in an action packed movie. The large white squares chomp down at me while my head has been brutally chewed by the giant. I cry thinking that my grandchildren, and their grandchildren would meet the same fate. Who would have known how miserable the life of a pickle would really be?

ZendoodleYour mind has no boundaries. Why should your art?

By Christina Goodin

Zentangle, Zendoodle, there are so many names for this art. When you’re bored, when you’re tired, even when you’re upset Zendoodling can be exactly what you’re looking for to calm down. My mother and I discovered this sketching technique while watching the web hoping for a creative art design to pop up. Then came… “Zentangle” and un-derneath it, “Zendoodle”. Of course we had to see what this was about and we realized that it truly is a type of doodling. You know what I mean, there are stars, squares, circles, etc. This became a daily habit. At least once a day we would take out a piece of paper and a pen and we would just doodle!! It is so relaxing and that’s why “Zen” is before the “doodle” and “tangle”. Zen is the practice of certain kinds of meditation. Meditation is to think deeply or focus for some time for spiritual purposes or just to relax. You should now under-stand why tense people do this to unwind. Actually, Zentangling doesn’t have to be to calm you down. If you’re an artist and want a new type of style, this would be a great experiment for you. If you need a way to express your feelings or you just need a new hobby, then this is a superb thing for you to do. This is one of my passions. Do you understand why? Now all you have to do is grab a piece of paper or even a napkin and a pen or pencil and doodle. The only rules is that you create. Your mind has no boundaries. Why should your art? Live. Love. Doodle.

ope Hodges (age 11 jersey #5) is a top-notch free throw shooter. She started playing basketball at the age of 6 when she was in 2nd grade. She, along with the rest of her fellow teammates from Flagler Future Basketball Team, first entered the Elk’s Free-throw shooting competition at Indian TrailsMiddle School. She had tied with her twin sister Faith Hodges (age 11, jersey #3) in the 10 and 11-age category. She had won that challenge and moved on to the next round, and won first place. The Elk lodge organization, which is self funded, paid for Hope and her family to stay in a hotel so she could participate in the 3rd round of the competition. Her parents, Tracey and Corey Hodges, grandparents, brother Andre, cousin Devon, teammates Athena, Simone, Noelle Gonzalez, along with Coach Jimmy Gonzalez all came out to support her. Her family is very supportive by getting her rebounds when she shoots, making sure she eats right, and getting enough sleep. Her goals are to play in high school, college, and eventually play in the WNBA. When I asked her what was her inspiration she said her dad, mom, Maya Moore, and Simone Augustine. She wants to be a professional basketball player when she grows up. Her advice for up in coming basketball players is to practice, practice, and practice. Before competitions she calms her nerves by taking deep breathes, praying, and listening to certain music. Unfortunately, she will not be moving on to the 4th round because she only achieved 2nd place. Hope practices with 100 free throws a day to keep progressing in hopes of entering in the Elk’s competition next year. We look forward to seeing her continue to bring home trophies. She definitely thanks her family and her team the Flagler Future.

How a special relationship influenced my life.

Because of...

T here are many different relationships, with many different purposes. There are relationships in a family, friendships, romantic relationships, business relation-ships, casual relationships; the list goes on and on. Each type of relationship plays a different role in your life and has a different impact on your life. Every time you meet a new person, you form a bond with them, and that’s a key part of relation-ships. Relationships are mainly built on bonds, trust, and compromise. In order to

have a healthy relationship with someone, you have to work with them, trust them, and bond with them, meaning you’ll have to do a little give-and-take.

All relationships are a part of life and you’re always going to be making new relationships.

Me And My Sister!

I’m Tateyanna the big sister. I’m nine years old and I love to write. I go to Heritage Academy. My favorite subject is writing.

My sister’s name is Sequoia and she is eight years old. She goes to the same school as I do. Her favorite subject is reading. She has been getting blues (rewards for doing good)

since she got straight As on her report card.

Well, at home we play fight, we play bad girls club, and sometimes we fight for real but then the next day we are like best friends.

When we try to be friends we go to places like the park, or we give each other things. We both share what we have, or sometimes we tell each other no, but just give it anyway. I’m so happy that we can still stay close together, and take up for each other. She’s still my sister and I kind of like her.

By Tateyanna Vernet

“The best times with my sister are when we share money and when she takes me places. Also, when we get along and play together.”

- Sequoia

“Tateyanna gets on my nerves. She asks for all the things I get and she goes everywhere with me.”

Best Friends Forever(BFF) Hey! It’s Athena and Christina here!! We’ve been best friends since third grade, and now we are heading into the Pre-IB program together as freshmen. All friendships have their roller coaster rides, but lucky for us, we know that when we’re down, we’ll always get right back up. That’s what we have done, and always will do. For example, during sixth grade we came across a bump in the road. We began to hang out with different groups of people and drifted away from each other. And then we saw less and less of each other. Which is normal. But we completely discontinued interacting with each other. So one day towards the end of the year, we began writing notes to each other describing how we felt about the situation. It turned out neither of us liked the way things turned out so we decided to change it. So we discussed our dilemmas and resolved our issues and became as close as ever to each other. Then we went over each other’s homes to create videos based on our friendship the title: BFFs. Now we stick together like glue and no one comes between us. We met at a 3rd grade lunchroom. When I (Athena) asked to sit next to Christina, she said yes.And I (Christina) was so shy and quiet, so I let the loud and outgoing Athena talk during lunch. But little did I know that she would become my best friend. She’s there for me through everything. I don’t know what I’d do without her. We look forward to seeing each other at FPC next year!

MY Adoptive Parents My Mom and Dad fell in love with me at first sight. They saw a picture of me in an email and that is how they first saw me. I was only two days old. Instead of saying “You Got Mail”, they said “You Got Baby”. Daddy stayed up all night to make copies of my picture then put them into frames so they could carry them around to show everyone. They flew to Antigua, Guatemala when I was two months. I was in a hospital because I had pneumonia and they were not allowed to see me. But I got better and they brought me to the hotel where they could keep me for a week. They even had a crib in their room. The people who worked in the dining room made a little bed for me at dinner time out of two chairs and tablecloths. My parents carried me everywhere in a sling. They said that lots of people stared at me because I was so little and had such long dark hair. My orphanage was near a volcano, actually three of them. People can climb up them, but my parents were concerned that it would be dangerous for me. They went back up to Michigan after a week, because more paperwork had to be done. About a month later, they could take me home for real. At the airport in Atlanta, I saw my first Disney store. I was very good on the airplane and didn’t scream at all. The night we came back from Guatemala was the night before Thanksgiving. We went to Ohio where my Dad and his family watched their team, Ohio State, on TV and they won. It was a miracle but the real miracle was me. The next day was Thanksgiving and we had a big feast to celebrate me as a new family member. Poor Mommy was sick and had to stay in bed. Then we went to Michigan to see my Mom’s side of the family. All their friends had a big surprise baby shower for me and I got to come. Boy, did I get a lot of presents. We lived in Michigan for five years then we moved to Palm Coast, Florida. I am now 10 years and I go to Phoenix Academy where I am in 5th grade. I hope someday to go back to Guatemala and look for my birth mom. I am so grateful to be in America. Some kids don’t know how lucky they are, they just want more stuff. I know about places where there isn’t enough to eat so I am every thankful.

Taking my hobby to the next level. My name is Arielle Cooper. I am a graduating senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School. I am going to study dental hygiene, which will take two years to get my degree. This degree will fund my dream of becoming a fashion designer. I plan to continue at a four years college in a fashion design program . I first started getting interested in fashion when I saw one of my classmates drawing clothes on model. l like the figures. I was immediately intrigued and started drawing figures of my own with my designs. This year I participated in the Act-So competition designing and creating a dress. With the help of my coaches, Mr. and Mrs. Ryan I learned how to illustrate my designs and sew one of my designs. I worked hard and pulled it through. For my future career, I hope to be a fashion designer and have my own fashion line and boutique.

It is time for six senior Flagler Youth Orchestra members, Sadie, Seth, Tashaye, Jan, Heather, and Melanie to take their “final bow” at the 2012 Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 9th at the Flagler Auditorium. Cheryl Tristam started FYO in 2003 with only eleven string players including her daughter Sadie. Now, nearly 300 students bestow captivating melodies upon the ears of Flagler County year after year.

Sadie Tristam: FPC IB senior, FYO Violinist.“The orchestra has enlightened my prospects in college because I can now join the orchestra at the University of Florida. I have played for nine years and I have learned the value of music. Music helped me become a better learner through the education it provided, and the Flagler Youth Orchestra is the base for that education. The Flagler Youth Orchestra gives students, from the age of 9 to the age of 18 the opportunity to learn musically, make new friends, and explore themselves creatively. The FYO has done that for me, too, and I will cherish the opportunity it has given me for the rest of my life. Ms. Caren has supported me throughout all of my struggles musically and has made me a better player. After this, I am planning on attending the University of Florida, and I will play in the orchestra there. Hopefully to continue my music education.”

Seth Reedy: Calvary Baptist Academy senior, FYO Violinist.“I love country and blue grass. FYO taught How to play better because you are classically trained. Being a part of FYO also tough me about unity and how to play with other musicians. It gave me the opportunity to get a performance as a cast member at the Flagler playhouse giving me exposure to other art forms. I also gave me an understanding of classical music and fur-ther expanding my knowledge of music. I am majoring in music at the University of North Florida. I will also do a Criminology minor in college.”

Tashaye Brown: FPC senior, FYO Violinist and Celloist.“I started FYO my freshman year of high school. I have been playing for about 8 to 9 years.

I want to do something like industrial violin music. FYO influenced me to do what I enjoy doing. I like to do art, I like to read, I like to write, and I like to philosophy. Interesting thing is I have the same birthday as frasz shcumann, so I was born an artist. I will major in illustration at Ringling College of art and design.”

Jan van Dalen: FPC senior FYO Violinist.“I started FYO in 2007. I previously played piano for 6 years. I started in the beginner class. I already knew how to read music, so I just practiced a lot and I moved up relatively quickly. Now I’m first chair violin. FYO was always very enjoyable. It brought in my musical taste and showed me about classical music. FYO showed me that violin could be used for more modern music. FYO also showed me music is my biggest passion in life. I am Going to UCF and majoring in Computer Science and minor in Performance arts.”

FYO is so much more than just an orchestra. It has aided these four senior artists down the path of success. They intend to further their music education in college in addition to other majors. Even though these seniors are leaving, the FYO juniors and sophomores are capable of filling the void. The students moving up have amazing skills thanks to the FYO’s Director, Caren Umbarger and instructors.

Girl, let me tell you about the hairstyles that people are wearing this spring and summer. The best hairstyles that you can do for hot weather are short, no fuss, and long lasting. SHORT STYLES

Short cuts are great because they are easy to maintain and style. Here are some examples:

BRAIDS/LOCKS/PLAITSBraids and plaits are easy to maintain, there is really no styling because once you do them they keep the style.

Locks are permanent once you lock your hair it stays locked. All you have to do is tighten them up and they are good to go.

EXTENSIONSKeeps it’s look for a long time and you can adjust to whatever style you want short, long, curly, puff or whatever color suits you.

Haunting Cassie

A Paranornal Short Story

Cassie could feel ice cold hands pulling her deeper and deeper into the pitch black forest. How did I get here? She thought. Who is this pulling me?

When she peered down at her mid-section, all she could see was imprints of hands that she couldn’t see.“What’s going on?” she questioned aloud. “Who are you? What do you want from me?”But there was no response. The forest, for the most part, was relatively silent, minus the ever-present WOOSH of the trees breezing past her, and the faint mumbling of the ghost. “It’s me, Toby, ” murmured the apparition. “I’m not here to harm you… But I need you to know the truth.”Toby? Cassie couldn’t believe that he was here. She had so many questions, and so little time. But one question over-powered all the others: The truth about what?“Truth? Truth about what, Toby?”“You’ll see…”And just as he said that, they stopped in front of a clearing in the trees. Toby released Cassie of his tingling grip. Cassie couldn’t believe he’d brought her here. She swore she’d never come back to this clearing, no matter what. She wanted to turn around and run far away from the forest and never look back. Too many memories remained in the meadow just beyond the opening of the trees. Thinking of October 24, 2002 sent chills down her spine, for it was the day Toby died in that very meadow. Cassie hadn’t followed him after he stormed off after their big break-up and a careless hunter mistook him for a bear, shooting him straight through the chest, killing him. She couldn’t help but feel guilty. She could feel the tears slowly creeping down her powdered face, leaving streaks in her eyeliner, no doubt. She didn’t want Toby to see her like this, even if he was a spirit. “Why did you bring me here?” she questioned, struggling to compose herself, her breath catching on every word.“Because I want you to know that it wasn’t your fault. You didn’t kill me Cassie, that careless hunter did. There was nothing you could’ve done to stop it. You can’t feel guilty for someone else’s sin. It’s not fair,“ he whispered in her ear,

sending another set of shivers down her spine. She hated knowing that he knew she’d been struggling with his death for 3 years, and still felt guilty.“It is my fault. I should’ve gone after you, Toby. I shouldn’t have let it end that way. I loved you, Toby, I still do, and I just let you walk out of my life that day, not knowing it was your last. I’ll never get over that.”She could still picture that cool, autumn afternoon: fairly cloudy, and slightly breezy, causing leaves to fall silently on the ground. She could see the hurt look on his face when she told him it was over, the way his forehead wrinkled just above his eyebrows. It was as if it was October 24th again. A subtle movement out of the corner of her right eye brought her back to the present. It must’ve been Toby, because she didn’t see anyone or anything next to her.“I love you, Cassie. I always have, and always will. But I can’t pass over until you admit that you did nothing wrong.” Toby replied.Cassie now knew that she had to put the past behind her and come to terms with the truth so her one true love could pass over and wait for her when indeed it was her time to die. But she didn’t want him to leave; she just got him back after over 3 years of guilt and sadness over the loss of the only man she ever loved. How could she let him go now? “But I don’t want you to leave me, Toby. I’ve hurt so much these past years and I can’t just let you leave. Please don’t leave me.” Cassie said, her voice fairly even.“I’ll tell you what Cass, I’ll stay the rest of the night with you, but then I must leave. I don’t want to, but spirits can only stay in the real world for so long... And you’ll see me when you pass over; I’ll be waiting for you, I promise.” With that said, Cassie smiled, crouched down on the soft grass, palm up, waiting for Toby’s hand to meet hers. “It’s a deal.” Cassie whispered. And so they sat, hand-in-hand, under the brilliant stars, listening to the beautiful crickets and frogs, singing a song just for them, the two lovers, finally re-united after what felt like a lifetime. They were the perfect match, Cassie and Toby, two people who would never let distance, or life and death, get in the way of their love.

And I was lucky enough to get an interview with one of its biggest fans [Matthew Moser].Voice Youth Magazine: How did you hear about Minecraft?Matthew Moser: My friends were talking about it almost all of the 2010-2011 school year, so during the summer, I got really bored and decided to look it up.VYM: So what, exactly, is Minecraft?MM: Minecraft is anything you want it to be! You can kill zombies and skeletons, colonize a mountain, explore the wonders of the 32-bit world, or anything else you can think of! Travel through biomes and biomes, from a snowy forest with frozen rivers to a cactus-infested desert, from disgusting swamps to towering mountains, from an enormous ocean to a wild jungle; the possibilities are endless!VYM: Wow! So does this world with endless possibilities cost any cash?MM: $30, but it’s totally worth it. If you were lucky, you got it for the reduced amount before the game officially released.VYM: Awesome! Who would you recommend this game to?MM: Everyone! It’s a great game for everyone!VYM: What is your favorite part of Minecraft?MM: Since I’m a master builder, I’d have to say building cities.

What is HypeHub? The HypeHub is created, designed, and maintained by aspiring students in a group called FPC Helpers from Flagler Palm Coast High School. These students are actively involved in a program called Community Problem Solving. This program utilizes teen’s logical skills, perseverance, and endurance to solve local, everyday dilemmas, which in turn helps them prepare to solve problems in the future.

The students’ main mission is “Building a Connection in the Community.” They strive to achieve this by creating a venue in which they can convey information towards the community. This is how the HypeHub was born! They have eight team members in total, all of which are in their sophomore year of high school.

We strive to do this by implementing a new venue in which organizations can post their events on one central hub.

Emmanuel and Phillip Hudson are two brothers who have made a series of videos on YouTube that have become a big hit. Emmanuel and Phillip were born in Mississippi in 1990 and 1992. Both brothers were named as the funniest boys in their school, and that still remains true today. When the two decided to make the video “Ratchet Girl Anthem”, they had no idea it would become a worldwide hit. Overnight, the video went from a few thousand views to 20 million views. The funny duo is now touring internationally. Today, they have their first single “Ratchet Girl Anthem” on iTunes, a website (www.ephudson.com), a fan page on Facebook (Emmanuel and Phillip Hudson), a fan page on Twitter (@EP_Hudson), along with personal Twitter accounts (@_kosher and @Phillnmyself), and their YouTube account (www.youtube.com/lile451).
