NFPA 2112 / UL CLASSIFIED Bulwark® Protective Apparel offers flame-resistant protective garments that are certified by Underwriters Laboratories to meet the requirements of nfPA® 2112 standard on flame Resistant Garments for Protection of industrial Personnel Against flash fire, 2007 Edition.* nfPA 2113 standard on selection, Care, Use, and Maintenance of flame Resistant Garments for Protection of industrial Personnel Against flash fire, 2012 Edition, requires that garments cover the upper and lower body and flammable underlayers as completely as possible. Bulwark® garments meet this requirement either as a single garment such as a coverall or when worn with another certified garment such as a shirt or pants to provide both upper and lower body coverage.

* Bulwark® garments that are currenlty certified to NFPA 2112, 2007 Edition will undergo recertification to the 2012 Edition prior to August 2012.

the nfPA® 2112 standard on flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of industrial Personnel Against flash fire and its companion standard, nfPA 2113 on selection, Care, Use, and Maintenance of these garments specify design, performance, certification requirements, and test methods for flame-resistant garments for use in areas at risk from flash fires. third party certification of garments is also required.

• In addition to third-party certifications of garments, flame resistance of each fabric layer is required to be tested as received and after 100 cycles of washing and drying and/or dry cleaning.

• The Thermal Protective Performance (TPP) must be tested and a minimum TPP rating of 6.0 is required for “spaced” and 3.0 for “contact.”

• Finally , coveralls made to a standard pattern from candidate fabrics are tested for overall flash fire exposure on an instrumented mannequin in accordance with ASTM Test Method F1930. The exposure heat flux is 84 kW/m² (2.02 cal/cm²/sec) with an exposure time of 3.0 seconds. the average total predicted body burn must not exceed 50%.

nfPA 2113 provides guidance in the selection and specification of flame-resistant garments, including workplace hazard assessment. other sections cover use and care and maintenance recommendations.

Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) CAN/CGSB 155.20, Workwear for Protection Against Hydrocarbon Flash Fire is the Canadian flash fire standard.

the Canadian standard requires that flame resistance, heat resistance and thermal shrinkage be tested and that the garment label be in both English & french. for single layer garments, the tPP values for both spaced and contact tests must be reported on the garment label.

whAt StAndArdS Are uSed FOr wOrkerS eXpOSed tO FLASh FIre hAzArdS?

various specifications and performance requirements have been established based on AstM d6413 testing. d6413 is the standard Us vertical flammability test method. Both the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) require no more than 2.0 seconds Afterflame and 4.0 inches (100mm) Char Length for protection against hydrocarbon flash fires. in the absence of other specifications, Bulwark® follows AstM f2302 requirements of no more than 2.0 seconds Afterflame and 6.0 inches Char Length as a minimum

requirement. other performance requirements may apply to specific garments and will be so indicated on the garment label.

there is a lot of misinformation in the market. Many items are labeled “FR” that actually only meet general wearing apparel standards or standards that are only applicable to upholstery or curtains. specifiers and end users must determine the appropriate PPE based on their hazard analysis and the standards and specifications applicable in their industry. PPE chosen must meet the requirements of the appropriate standards and specifications.

1. Height: Stand straight against a wall without your shoes. Make a mark level with the top of your head. Measure from this point down to the floor.

2. Neck: Measure around the base of the neck where a collared shirt would fit or measure a collarband on a shirt that fits you well. Lay the collarband flat. Measure from the beginning of the button hole to the center of the button.

3. Chest: Measure well up under your arms, across your shoulder blades and over the fullest part of your chest. Hold the tape firmly, but not tightly. Be sure the tape is level and straight across your back. Stand naturally.

4. Sleeve: Bend the elbow slightly. Start at the center back of the neck and measure across the shoulder to the elbow and down to the wrist bone.

5. Waist: First, remove your belt. Then, measure over shirt (not over pants) at the position you normally wear your pants. Hold the tape firmly but not tightly.

6. Hips: Stand with your heels together. Measure around the fullest part of the hips, holding tape measure level.

7. Inseam: Use similar style pants that fit you well. Lay them flat with the front and back creases smooth. Measure along the inside seam of one leg from the bottom of hem to the crotch.
