    know where their buyers are and they know how to ullthe! in. )t$s u to you as a buyer to do your research%but it can be very confusing because bad breeders willclai! all the sa!e things that good ones do.

    Dachshunds: an introduction#he origins of the Dachshund can be traced back toworking dogs that could go to ground after ani!als

    such as badgers% fo'es and rabbits.

    #he breed is described as !oderately long and lowwith a well+!uscled body% bold% defiant carriage ofhead and intelligent e'ression.

    Dachshunds are very oular as ets and% in the ,-%co!e in si' varieties% two sies / Standard 20+2 lbs

    and "iniature 10+11lbs / and three coats / S!ooth%3ong and 4ire 5aired.

    #hey are loyal co!anions and generally !ake goodfa!ily ets. Standards are !ore robust and thereforerobably better for fa!ilies with very young children.

    Coats and colours

    #ooth-haired: Dense% short% s!ooth and shiny7 re8uiring little

    !aintenance. "ost co!!on colours are Black and #an%9ed% Chocolate:#an and Dale.

    $ong-haired: Soft and straight with feathering on underarts% ears%

    behind legs and tail where it for!s a flag. Coat re8uires

    regular groo!ing. "ost co!!on colours are Black and#an% 9ed ranging fro! Crea! to Shaded 9ed%

    Chocolate:#an and Silver Dale.

    %ire-haired: A short% harsh coat with a dense undercoat covers thebody. #here is a beard on the chin% the eyebrows arebushy% but hair on the ears is al!ost s!ooth. A 4ire coattyically will need striing never cliing twice a year7they don$t !oult. "ost co!!on colours are Brindle and9ed. Chocolate:#an and Dale also occurs.

    ealth issuesDachshunds generally suffer few health roble!s roviding they are ket well e'ercised and fed a healthy%balanced diet. n average% they live to !ore than 12 years old.

    Because they are a dwarf breed there is an increased risk of back roble!s. Always ask about any historyof back roble!s when buying a uy. roble!s are best avoided by keeing the dog fit and not allowingit to beco!e overweight% or to run u and down stairs which uts e'tra stress on the back.

    #here is little difference in sie or te!era!ent between Dachshund dogs and bitches.

    Bitches have the disadvantage of co!ing in season twice yearly and dachsies can suffer fro!

    Finding the right Breeder4e strongly reco!!end that you ask a Breed Club Secretary for reco!!endations of breeders before

    Breeders who are !e!bers of a Dachshund Breed Club will co!ly with our Code of &thics which covers

    !atters such as health testing% the age at which a bitch should be bred fro! and the !a'i!u! nu!ber of

    litters a bitch should have. Breed Club !e!bers will be aware of the relevant health tests which are

    reco!!ended for Dachshunds and should be able to talk knowledgeably about the relevance of these.

    Buying your puppy

    &'cet in e'cetional circu!stances you should always be able to see the !other of the uy. isit where

    the uy was born% regardless of how far you have to travel. (ever buy fro! a et sho. >et a writtenreceit for the uy. Carefully read and understand any conditions i!osed by the breeder.

    A resonsible breeder will let you see all the uies in the litter% with their !other and you should be ableto handle the!. Lou !ay not always be able to choose the uy you want% as the breeder will haverobably icked their first choice to kee and other buyers !ay already have chosen% before you.

    )f the uy is -C 9egistered% 9egistration aers should be available when you ay for the uy. )t is

    the resonsibility of the breeder to register the uies with the -C and they !ust then give you thecertificate for transfer of ownershi.

    All uies should be rovided with free health insurance to cover the first few weeks with their new owner.

    #he breeder should give you a diet sheet and referably also a few days$ suly of their current food.

    9eutable breeders will not be reared to sell uies without !eeting rosective buyers and will not sell

    to eole who are out at work all day% leaving the dog unattended.

    FeedingHollow the feeding guidelines given to you by your uy$s breeder.

    Lour uy will grow raidly in the first !onths of life% and will continue to fill out and !ature until she is1 !onths to two years of age. #his is a critical ti!e for your uy and a well balanced diet will influenceher health during her entire life. (ever give table scras as they !ay uset her tu!!y.

    She should be allowed to eat her !eals undisturbed.

    Lour uy will enJoy a hard biscuit when she is cutting her adult teeth at ; to !onths of age.

    5eavy lastic or stainless steel bowls are easy to wash and kee clean. #he dishes should be solely for theuy$s use and should be washed after every !eal. She !ust have access to fresh water at all ti!es.Change the water several ti!es a day and kee the bowl clean.

    nce the uy has finished her course of inoculations%start to take her for a short walk of about ; !inutes everycoule of days or so to hel her get used to traffic andother eole and dogs. By the ti!e she is about 6 !onths old% she should be having a 10 !inute walkevery other day% then as she gets to ; !onths gradually increase the distance and ti!e to about 1; !inutesevery day. By !onths she should be going for a 20 to 2; !inute walk on the lead each day. By a year oldyou should be giving your dog a *0+60 !inute walk a day. nce adult% your Dachsie will take any a!ount ofe'ercise you care to give.#he e'ercise advice is articularly relevant for uies that will be shown because too !uch e'ercise% toosoon% will cause out+turned feet% oor tolines and oor body develo!ent.

    'rainingSo!e basic training is needed to allow your uy to achieve her full otential as a co!anion. #raining% orthe lack of it will influence her disosition. #he only training needed for a week or two is to revent bad

    habits for!ing. )f you allow the uy to Ju! u at eole it will be difficult to sto her later. A uy Ju!sfor attention% ut her down and raise her on the floor.

    3ead training should be introduced as art of layti!e. &ncourage her to co!e on the lead by laying withher. Consider attending training classes% if only an +week beginner$s course. #hey are invaluable% and atrained dog is a hay dog. A list of reutable training clubs is available fro! the -ennel Club% or ask yourvet.

    )f you want a dog that$s going to be easy to train% buy a gundog% or border collie% not a Dachshund.Dachshunds are not noted for their obedience but% with atience and ersistence by the owner% they can betrained to basic levels of obedience. 5owever% they are 5ounds and when they are off the lead% if they get ascent% they can uide Dog or Drug Sniffer DogM >enerally% theydo obedience u to the oint that suits the!M Hor so!e% that$s a retty low level7 but for working #eckels% it$s8uite re!arkable.

    verall% these are a!aingly fit% healthy and rewarding dogs to own7 full of character and trainable enough

    to be fun.

    Do they coe back if let off the lead.

    back by use of encouraging co!!ands and titbits as bribes. 5owever% so!e

    dogs have a very strong hunting instinct and !ay never be safe to let off. #he

    secret is to start young and !ake it fun for the! to co!e back.

    #hey have absolutely no road sense. 5owever well trained your Dachshund

    !ay be% it is si!ly not worth the risk and otential heartbreak to let her walknear a road% off the lead. (ear a road% always kee your dog on a short lead7

    never use an e'tending fle'i+lead.

    our Dachshund=s bodyweightHor a healthy% hay Dachshund% you need to kee her atthe right weight throughout her life. Being overweight% or

    indeed underweight% can lead to serious health risks. )t isgood to get into the habit of checking your DachshundOsweight on a regular basis. #he et SieP+"eter shownhere is the erfect tool to hel you do this.

    Lour Dachshund is at an ideal weightif you can easilyfeel her ribs% but they are not visible. She should have anobvious waist behind the ribs% when viewed fro! above.

    #here should be little abdo!inal fat and a slight tuck+ushould be evident when she is viewed fro! the side.

    Lour Dachshund is not getting enough to eatif you caneasily see her ribs% sine and elvic bones. Lou will beunable to feel any fat on her bones% and will ossiblynotice so!e loss of !uscle !ass. She will have anobvious abdo!inal tuck+u% when viewed fro! the side.Lou should increase the sie of her ortions and !aybeconsider finding a food with a higher calorie level.

    Lour Dachshund is oerweightif you cannot feel her ribs and can see fat over her back and the base ofher tail. She will also have rolls of fat on her neck and over her shoulders. She will have no discerniblewaist behind the ribs% when viewed fro! above% and you will be able to see e'cessive abdo!inal fat or adistended underline% in rofile. #he risk of obesity increases with age and is !ore co!!on in neuteredani!als% and there are associated risks of diabetes and osteoarthritis. #he !ost obvious solution is to

    reduce the 8uantities your Dachshund eats including titbitsM% or !ove her onto a lower calorie food.

    Hor those Dachshund owners interested in showing their dog% the Breed Standard defines the "iniatureand Standard varieties on the basis of their weight?

    Standards: 9!" #g $"%"& lbs', Miniatures: (deal weight ).* #g $!% lbs', desired maximum weight * #g $!!lbs'; #he Breed Standard also says? +xhibits which appear thin and undernourished should be severelypenalised.

    Qudges have a resonsibility to ensure that there are no welfare issues% articularly of "iniatureDachshunds% related to the weight clause in the Breed Standard. A dog is too thin if% when running yourfingertis against the direction of the coat without alying any ressure% you can?

    So!eti!es% young !ale dogs can go through a hase of not eating well and aearing underweight7 such

    dogs would be best left at ho!e until they body+u% rather than being shown looking thin.

    )t is e8ually unaccetable to show a dog that is overweight and who looks like it needs !ore e'erciseand:or less food. Dachshunds should be shown in fit% well+!uscled condition so that it is clear they coulddo the work for which they were originally bred.

    of the breed. #he Breed Council was set u to continue and advance the work of the ,- Dachshund

    Horu! which had been in e'istence for 10 years. #he Horu! was set u initially to allow Dachshund BreedClubs to coordinate Show Dates and Qudging 3ists. #he work of the Horu! develoed to look at 5ealth and
