On April 27th, a group of volunteers with last names that are literally at the end of the alphabet got together to clean and organize the BVDC trailer! A huge thank you to Jane Oehler, Hannah Polson, Mike Quear, Don Stewart, Bill Venditta, and Zana White!
This project was spearheaded by Hannah and Jane, the organizers for the September BCDS, looking to see what we have in the trailer that can be used for the show. Now we know where we stand and what needs to be repaired, painted, embellished, purchased, etc.
We are hoping that members with last names that make up the rest of the alphabet will sign on as volunteers for the show! Please contact Hannah or Jane to pitch in and help out! We are going to need a lot of helpers!

BVDC Novice Driver Clinic with Lore Homer The novice driver clinic on April 22nd at Chapter One Farms with clinician Lore Homer went really well. Lore was at her finest and kept everybody at the clinic engaged and interested in the driving presentation!
We had two pretty "hot" ponies participating in the clinic so it was perfect for auditors to see various situations with ground driving a more lively equine. Had we had more horses in the clinic it might have gotten a little stressful for all! Later on, Helene Paxton put her lovely Morgan mare to a carriage and drove her in the clinic too. The food was delicious and everyone said they really enjoyed the day!
Thank you to Lore and Helene!

EHV can survive in water for three weeks, study shows By David Woodmansey
VetTimes.co.uk April 24, 2017
A study has demonstrated airborne equine herpesvirus (EHV) remains stable and infectious in water over a three-week period. "Water sources in many parts of the world are frequently accessed by different equid species and non-equids living in sympatry ... It is at these water sources that equid species infected with EHV-1 could potentially be shedding virus into the water where it can persist long after the animals have moved on," the study says. The results, reported in Scientific Reports, suggest untreated water could be a source of infection by some herpesviruses. The study, led by scientists from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in collaboration with the Institut für Virologie of the Freie Universität Berlin, challenges the tenet that herpes viruses, like most enveloped viruses, are relatively unstable outside their host. Scientists tested this assumption by spiking water with EHV under different conditions over a three-week period and examining whether viral DNA could be retrieved and to what extent the virus remained infectious after having been in the water. The results, summarised in Science Daily, demonstrate the virus remains stable and infectious for up to three weeks, with pH and temperature being the two most important factors to determine how long the virus "survived". Colonial Carriage & Driving Society Presents
The 19th Annual ORLETON FARM Combined Driving Test, Super Derby & Cross Country Pleasure Drive and Pleasure Driving Show (ADS rated)
June 8 - 11, 2017 Orleton Farm, 31 Prospect Hill Rd, Stockbridge, MA 01262
Prize list: www.colonialcarriage.org
The Orleton Farm Pleasure Driving Show, Combined Test and Super Derby is a unique event, in 2016 the event expanded to a four day event to further accommodate the increasing interest in this venue. We continue that format in 2017. There are classes and divisions for everyone. The first day offers the traditional Combined Test of dressage and cone classes. On Friday the Super Derby and Derby Obstacle for VSEs, ponies and horses is a full day. Friday will also offer an optional scored Cross Country Pleasure Drive and Super Drive for the exhibitor’s choosing to stay over from the combined test for the pleasure show, or exhibitors arriving early in preparation for the pleasure show but not necessarily interested in the Derby. Derby Day is then followed by a two-day pleasure driving show. The 2017 schedule will continue to offer the Utility Vehicle Division, a Park Division and a Picnic Class along with a popular American Heritage class and the Ride and Drive class. We have split the multiples to offer a Tandem Division and
Unicorn/Four-in-Hand Division. These classes will bring variety and excitement to the event. New in 2017 is a Maiden Horse/Pony Division and we have brought back the Trade and Commercial Vehicle Classes. As our show continues to
grow, we are dedicated to make your experience the best possible. On Sunday the Gathering of Vintage of Automobiles will be on display. Come and have fun!

starting a summer BBQ/Picnic at someone’s farm. Kathy suggested asking New Bolton for use of their green space outside of the Allam House. Jane also suggested sending an e-blast to ask the membership if they would like a summer picnic instead of a holiday party. The party still lost money even with the change of nights from Sunday to Saturday. Zana mentioned the holiday party is end of the year vote on club matters. Which is why we have the holiday party. By-laws would have to be changed in order to change the end of the year vote. Question is can the vote be done via email instead of in person?

Several BVDC members attended a pleasure drive at Southwind Winery in Millville NJ. Michael and Dawn Pontz were the organizers. A picture perfect day. BVDC members Leslie Bottaro, Cindy Amalfitano, Gemma Pagliei, and Zana White were some of the participants. We are working on organizing a pleasure drive here for BVDC. There was a Food service truck on hand with really delicious food and later we did a wine tasting and socializing in the wine store at the vinyards. The driving trails wound through the woods and through the vineyard. The owner welcomes equestrians and their equines. And it's just $10 for the day. Just call Southwind Winery to make arrangements.
