On Thursday April 26,

2012 at 1:25 in the

morning, the Buckeye

Police Department

received

numerous reports of

multiple vehicle windows

being shattered by a BB gun. While officers

responded to these calls in

the West Park area,

located near Miller Rd.

and Lower Buckeye Rd., a

speeding Volkswagon

passenger car was seen

leaving the area, which

was occupied by five

males.

Walmart Demonstrates Global Leadership in Sustainability with Substantial Solar Power Footprint in Arizona Retailer Announces FY12

Environmental Impact Data, Showing Significant Benefit to Growing Number of Renewable Energy Sites Within the State

As part of our mission to build a sustainable future, Walmart

announces a year of expansion and development of solar power projects in Arizona. Since March 2011, Walmart has more than doubled solar power installations at stores, clubs, and distribution centers, with a total of 21 installations across the state.

“Walmart’s investment in solar technology has grown significantly, with solar installations in Arizona more than doubling in the past year,” said

Marty Gilbert, director, Walmart energy. “Due to the success of projects in states like Arizona, we’ve continued to

expand our renewable energy efforts throughout the U.S., having just reached an exciting milestone of 100 solar power installations on Walmart

stores, clubs and distribution centers. There’s still more work to be done to ultimately power all of our locations with renewable energy, which will

bring great environmental benefit to each state and financial savings where the installations are found.”

Walmart’s SolarCity crystalline and thin film solar panel installations have generated more than 20.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean, renewable

energy in the past year, which is the equivalent of powering more than 1,700 homes. Additionally, the installations have prevented more than 27

million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions from being released into the air, which are harmful to public health and the environment. This is

equivalent to taking more than 2,750 vehicles off of the roads in Arizona.

Arizona was one of the first states to receive solar generating systems at its Walmart stores, helping to lead the company in reaching its goal of

using

renewable energy at all of its locations throughout the country. While solar power is a natural sustainability application for states in the nation’s

Sunbelt such as Arizona, it is only one of numerous global sustainability achievements highlighted in Walmart’s Global Responsibility Report

released Monday, April 16. The report reviews Walmart’s progress and performance during fiscal year 2012, as well as areas of opportunity for the

future.

The Town of Buckeye Fire Department is excited to announce the

opening of our newest station, Fire House 703 in Verrado on Saturday, April 28th. This has been a tremendous project and a

very long time in the making. The formal ceremonies will be held

at 9:00 a.m. with festivities, including self guided tours of the new

station, fire truck rides, and free lunch to follow. We hope you can

make it out to join in the celebration!

Buckeye is very fortunate to have a newly built firestation.

This energy efficient station is built out of bricks and has

solar panels which will air in water heating and supplying

electricity.

This new firestation is a battalion station which has 4 fire

trucks, a community room and an area for police officers to

do their paperwork.

This 2 story, 15,000 square foot facility is nestled at the

eastern base of the White Tank Mountains.

A grand opening celebration was held on Saturday, April

,2012. the event started at 9:00 am at the station.

There were self-guided tours, fire truck rides, lunch and a

chance to meet the firefighters.

The firefighters are so thankful to have such a nice facility.

They had been working out of a temporary facility which was a run down building near Jack Rabbit Trail and Indian

School.

Thank you to all firefighters for all that they do. We

appreciate the long hours they put in and the fact that they

are there for our community whenever needed.

You are truly heroes in our eyes.

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

This scholarship is for a CONTINUING COLLEGE STUDENT only identified as

a 2nd year, 3rd year or 4th year, and a graduate of the BUCKEYE UNION HIGH

SCHOOL DISTRICT.

Only applications completed and submitted correctly will be considered. The

scholarship will be awarded regardless of race, religion, sex or national origin. A

personal photograph, which will not be returned, must accompany the application.

The awardee will be notified by the DAR Scholarship Committee Chairman of the

Buckeye Chapter, only after reviewed and approved by local committee members. An essay of 250 to 500 words, double spaced, must be submitted with the

application.

In honor of the Arizona Centennial, the 2012 essay is: What my State and

Community mean to me. The applicant who is awarded this scholarship must be a full

time student enrolled in an accredited college/university in the state OF ARIZONA.

Proof of acceptance/enrollment must be included with the application. Prior recipients

may reapply for this scholarship and be considered along with other members in the

applicant pool. The amount of the scholarship is $500.00 for a student who complies

with all application requirements and with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. Emphasis will be

placed on the essay.

Monies will be paid directly to the institution in the recipient’s name.

Applications must be completed and submitted on or before June 1, 2012 and may be

2. BUHS Band and Choir rates high in competition at Eastern Arizona College. The choir received 2nd place

for their musical presentation , the band receiving a “Superior” first place rating (one of only four bands

to receive that rating all day).

3. The Buckeye Women’s Club held their Annual Spring Luncheon featuring a Fashion Show. The Buckeye

Woman’s Club has been very active in Buckeye since it’s organization in 1923.

4. 20 years ago (1992) Buckeye police officer Kris Guffey captures four armed robbery suspects after high speed chase.

5. The Drama Department at BUHS presents a “Night of Theatre” with Vicki Estes as Drama

Director. BUHS students Molly Kirkpatrick and Daniel Saylor are recipients of $4,000. in scholar

ships by the medical staff of Maryvale Samaritan Medical Center.

6. 30 years ago (1982) Joe Mirick announces his candidacy for Justice of the Peace in the Buckeye

Precinct.

7. Eng family purchases three apartment complexes, The Buckeye Arms, Rusty’s Apartments, and

Parkview Apartments

8. Mrs. Lovel Rousseau and Mrs. Sandy Allen prepared a dinner feast for Gov. Babbitt in honor of him

signing the proclamation declaring April 29, 1982 as Farm-City Festival. Randy Spilsbury is named

the new head basketball coach at BUHS for the upcoming season.

8. 40 years ago (1972) Buckeye’s Jr. Woman’s Club president Diane

Shepard turns over the gavel to the new incoming president Marla McCall. New officers : Paula Carlton,

recording secretary; Diane Shepard 2nd vice president; Marge Welch, 1st vice president; Dorothy Rode,

corresponding secretary and Jo England, treasurer. Three BUHS students receive scholarships to ASU,

Beverly Faye Williams, Denise Gayle Perry and Guyanne Vanlandingham. Provided by the Arizona Board

of Regents, the scholarships are awarded annually to students who demonstrate promise of high academic

performance. Buckeye Pioneer Days nets $8,956. A new established Executive Committee of the

Coordinating Council has been appointed: Chairman , Sid Davis; 1st Vice President, Murel Stephens; 2nd

Vice President, Leigh Watkins; Secretary, Patsy Beyer; Treasurer, Harriett Odom; members at large Hilda

Harder and Mark Shepard, and the ex officio member, Jackie Meck.

Oven Beef Jerky By: Cindi DeBenedetto

Round steak, cut into 1/8 inch thick strips (with the grain)

½ tsp garlic salt ½ tsp lemon pepper ½ c soy sauce or teriyaki sauce 2 T liquid smoke (opt)

Trim fat from meat. (fat can cause your meat to spoil more quickly). Mix soy or

teriyaki sauce with garlic salt and lemon pepper, marinate about ½ hour. Place

strips close together, but not overlapping, in single layer on rack over baking

sheet. Bake in slow oven (150-175) overnight, about 10 to 12 hours. Jerky

should not be crisp. If it is, oven temperature was too high.

Buckeye Police Arrest Multiple Suspects for Damaging Multiple Vehicles Continue from front page

Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and saw a BB gun in the vehicle. Investigation and interviews with the men revealed the group was involved in shooting out the

windows of parked cars, from their vehicle, at several locations throughout the Town of Buckeye. There are approximately 30 victims of this wide spread criminal activity, and a

total damage estimate of over $10,000. The Buckeye Police Department will be working with neighboring police jurisdictions, regarding admissions of similar criminal activity in

Avondale and Goodyear, made by the suspects.

Chief Mann stated he realizes how devastating criminal activity such as this can be in any community and expressed his appreciation for the efforts and abilities of the police officers

at the Buckeye Police Department. The five subjects are:

The Buckeye Police Departments 3rd Annual Softball Tournament is a big success. Buckeye Police Department took 1st place honors while Buckeye Rural Fire Department took 2nd.

Teddy Bear Day is observed at the Child Development Center in Buckeye. Pam Lanford has been teaching for 18 years since the beginning of operations in 1986.

Tonopah, Arizona, on April 26th, 2012. He has

brown hair and green eyes. Last seen wearing
