10. Chemical Kinetics and Catalysis Chemical kinetics and its scope, rate of a reaction, factors influencing the rate of a reaction-concentration, temperature, pressure, solvent, light, catalyst. Concentration

dependence of rates, mathematical characteristics of simple chemical reactions - zero order, first order, second order, pseudo order, half life and mean life. Determination of the order of reaction -differential method, method of integration, method of half life period and isolation method. Problems Radioactive decay as a first order phenomenon. Problems Experimental methods of chemical kinetics: conductometric, optical methods, polarimetry and spectrophotometry

Entropy change in ideal gases and mixing of gases. Gibbs and Helmholtz functions: Gibbs function (G) and Helmholtz function (A) as

T. III Aliphatic Hydrocarbons

(a) Alkanes: Methods of formation (with special reference to Wurtz reaction, Kolbe

reaction, Corey-House reaction and decarboxylation of carboxylic acids), Mechanism

of free radical halogenation of alkanes- orientation, reactivity and selectivity. (b) Alkenes: Methods of formation, dehydration of alcohols and dehydrohalogenation of alkyl halides, regioselectivity in alcohol dehydration. EJECTION AND FEED SYSTEM: Ejection, Ejection Techniques, Types of

Ejection-ejector pins, Ejector Grid, Ejector Plate,. Feed System- Sprue,

Runner & Gate.

UNIT-II MOULD DESIGN: Injection Mould, Compression & Transfer Mould, Blow Mould, Extrusion Die.

Unit 1. Definition of plastic wastes and litter, basis for assessing plastic wastes,

applications of plastics and their potential as sources of waste. Separation

techniques (density - float sink and froth floatation methods, optical,

spectroscopic, sorting by melting temperature etc.).

Unit 2. Thermoplastic waste management: 4 R’s approach (reduce, reuse, recycle

(mechanical and chemical), recover), recycling classification- - primary -

secondary - tertiary - quaternary recycling with examples.

Unit 3. Disposal processes and various waste treatment methods – controlled tipping,

pulverization, compositing, Energy from waste – (incinerators- pyrolysis,

factors affecting incineration), new developments in thermal disposal of refuse,

on-site disposal methods, compacting and baling.
