His clinical areas of interest range from esthetic and minimally invasive periodontal and implant surgery, as well as tissue engineering. Dr. Zadeh directs the Laboratory for Immunoregulation and Tissue Engineering (LITE) at USC, dedicated to studying basic mechanisms to regulate bone and tissue regenera-tion/destruction under health/disease states, as well as conducting clinical trials of dental implant outcomes. He has an extensive publication track, having published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as book chapters. Dr. Zadeh is the director of USC International Periodontal and Implant Symposium, which is currently in its 42nd year. INTERDISCIPLINARY STRATEGIES TO MANAGE PATIENTS WITH BONE AND SOFT TISSUE DEFICIENCIESCourse Description:Patients often present with a variety of bone and soft tissue deficiencies around teeth or in sites planned for implant therapy. Examples of soft tissue defects include gingival recession around teeth and mucosal deficiency around implants. Many of the sites planned for implant therapy also present with alveolar bone deficiency. This presentation will address some of the most common scenarios encountered in clinical practice. A variety of therapeutic options are available to reconstruct atrophic hard and soft tissues. The regenerative options must be balanced against options requiring less surgical reconstruction, including using reduced dimension (short of narrow) implants. Additional option of using prosthetic tissue (eg pink ceramic) may be considered. The treatment begins with proper diagnosis and discussion of patients’ goals and expectations. A risk assessment will reveal the therapeutic options and the likelihood of achieving desired outcomes. Therapy may entail interdisciplinary team to perform orthodontic, periodontal, surgical and prosthetic aspects of patient care. This presentation will demonstrate the treatment of clinical cases to illustrate some of the concepts and therapeutic options.Educational objectives: at the conclusion of this presentation, participants should have an understanding of: • Therapeutic options for gingival recession around teeth and mucosal deficiency around implants. • Therapeutic options for bone augmentation in sites with minor to major alveolar bone atrophy planned for implant therapy. • Guidelines for decision making on when hard and soft tissue augmentation is necessary and when prosthetic tissues may be employed. • Interdisciplinary management of patients with complex hard and soft tissue defects.

REGENERATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR COMMON SOFT TISSUE & BONE DEFICIENCIESRegeneration of soft tissue and bone deficiencies require 1) proper diagnosis, 2) risk assessment to determine the likelihood of achieving success, 3) selection of appropriate technique, material and protocol. Although many techniques, material and protocol are available to select, emphasis will be placed on selection of those which are: evidence based, associated with lower patient morbidity and less chance of complication. This focus session will begin with explanation of the concepts and theoretical aspects, followed description of step-by-step protocol. The hands-on component will utilize realistic model specifically designed for this workshop. The demonstration by instructor will be followed by execution of each procedure by participants. Educational objectives: at the conclusion of this presentation, participants will gain practical experience with: • Vestibular Incision Subperiosteal Tunnel Access (VISTA) for management of gingival recession around teeth and mucosal deficiency around implants. • Modular bone augmentation (MBA) alveolar ridge augmentation in atrophic sites planned for implant therapy. • Material selection for bone and soft tissue regenerative therapies

Armstrong Woods: The serene, majestic beauty of this Grove is a living reminder of the magnificent primeval redwood forest that cov-ered much of this area before logging operations began during the 19th century. Armstrong Redwoods preserves stately and magnificent Sequoia sempervirens, commonly known as the coast redwood. These trees stand together as a testament to the wonders of the natural world. The grove offers solace from the hustle and bustle of daily life, offering the onlooker great inspiration and a place for quiet reflection. The reserve includes a visitor center, large outdoor amphitheater, self-guided nature trails, and a variety of picnic facilities. While you can drive into the park, the best way to experience the dramatic effect of the towering redwoods, is to park in the lot at the park entrance and walk in for free.  Donations are accepted at the Visitor Center and at the kiosk entrance.   All of the main park features can be found along the Pioneer Nature Trail. This trail is a mile and a half long round trip, is ADA accessible and is mostly flat and level.

CONTEMPORARY PERIODONTAL AND PERI-IMPLANT PLASTIC THERAPYLecture Synopsis: Soft tissue recession around teeth and Implants is an epidemic problem in the field of dentistry. Multiple challenges exist in proper treatment planning and execution, especially in the esthetic zone. Harvesting limitations of autogenous tissue from the palate represent a true challenge when treating patients with multiple recessions or gingival deformities around teeth and dental implants. A predictable and long-term peri-implant soft tissue augmentation outcome is primarily dependent on proper diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning.Learning Objectives: • Understand the biological foundation of the advanced platelet-rich fibrin (APRF) used as periodontal tissue promoter. • Discuss the fibrin soft tissue promotion (FSTP) for the purpose of root coverage. • Understand the need of soft tissue around dental implants to maintain a successful long-term outcome. • Discuss the interplay of mucosal-restorative abutment interplay. • Establish a decision-making tree on when and how to augment peri-implants.

AVOIDING AND MANAGING RESTORATIVE IMPLANT COMPLICATIONSCourse Description:As dentists, the words we never want to hear from our patients are: “Doctor, my implant is loose”Your heart stops beating. Then after you catch your breath, you think: “Is it the implant or is it the restoration?”“Is it the cement or is it the abutment?”“Is the screw loose or is the screw broken?”

There are a host of heartaches awaiting us if we ignore certain basic principles of restorative implant dentistry, material science and screw dynamics. This presentation will be of interest to both the experienced and the novice practitioner as it will result in effortless decision making and will enable the periodontist to not only collaborate better with the general dentist but to assist the general dentist and the laboratory technician in the design of each implant situation with confidence.

Program Objectives: 1. Criteria for screw retained vs cement retained restorations 2. Know what are the ideal abutment contours for restorations to maintain and support soft tissue 3. Rationale for material choices for abutments and crowns 4. Understand the principles of screw dynamics 5. Understanding implant neck design to reduce failures and complications
