What are sound waves and what affects them?

Sound waves are described in frequency and wavelength.

Frequency is the number of waves passing each second.

Wavelength is the distance between 2 waves.Sound is affected by the medium (air or

water).

For my experiment I made…

I made a Pan Flute because it is a good way to show how sound travels.

The reason that different sounds come out of each straw is because they are all different lengths.

So Why does it create different sounds?

The straw that is the longest has a deeper sound than the straw that is the shortest.

In the longer straw, the sound waves have a longer distance to travel and therefore create a deeper pitch.

In the shortest straw, the sound waves have a shorter distance to travel and therefore create a higher pitch.

How to make a pan flute

Materials:7 straws TapeScissorsRulerMethod: 1.For each straw, I cut 7 mm more than the last.

I then cut the bendy part off the 1st straw. 2.Lastly I arranged them from largest to

smallest and taped them in order.

Fun Facts about Sound !

Our ears vibrate in a similar way to the original source of the vibration, allowing us to hear many different sounds.

Sound is used by many animals to detect danger, warning them of possible attacks before they happen.

The sound of thunder is produced by rapidly heated air surrounding lightning which expands faster than the speed of sound.
