IBCC Summer Cultural / Language Immersion Assignment

Hi, my name is Anthony Torres and I am going to be a junior this year at Prosser Career Academy High School.

For my career path I would hope to be a veterinarian in the future because while science is my favorite subject, I can use that knowledge to someday save lives.

Last year I had Building Construction as my shop when I was a sophomore and the experience great and very rewarding. In shop, I got to learn all the different kinds of building equipment as well as many tools. Someday I can hopefully learn how to build my very own house.

I hope to gain as much knowledge as I can while in IBCC that way I can achieve higher standards as well as prove to be reliable when needed most.

Intro

What I have learned and experienced from being at the Ukrainian Festival is that they love to listen to an extent amount of music that sounds pleasant to the ears.

The people there only ate under the tent and had their conversations as normal, but you can really tell it was more than just a day in the rain with music playing. It was an exquisite way to have a family bonding moment.

Ukrainian Days Festival

My first impression about the festival was that it was only a normal hangout with music and mud everywhere. It only took a matter of time to see just how fun a festival can be even if it’s just a get-togetherI will use what I have learned from this festival as a way to bring my family together since we are sometimes very apart from one another.

What I would use from my experience is to plan a day that it will rain for my family and/or friends and prepare music and food, then I would wait for it to rain so the younger ones would frolic in the mud since they ARE kids after all.

Experiences

I chose the Ukrainian Festival because I wanted to learn about the different cultures including the type of music they play at their festivals.

Also I wanted to know the type of food and pastries they make. Their festive outfits were vividly colorful, even more than the ones we wear at our own festivities.

Choices

I will use what I have learned from the festival for times where the family needs to connect, like in family reunions and social gatherings and/or events that are outdoors that way everyone can have fresh air and have a good time.

I believe this event applied to the “balanced” section of the profile because the people at the festival went out of their way to spend time with their family members regardless if it rained or the ground was too muddy. The Ukrainians understood that that time was precious for all of the to remember.

Future and IB learner profile

What I have learned from the fashion festival is that stylists’ take their time out of their way to create their own personal fashion design and expose them to the people as a new way to express themselves.

They had even created new fashion designs for pets. It was fun to see all of the dogs in outfits that really suited them.

Chicago Fashion Fest

My first impression of the fashion festival was that it would only be about fashion until I saw that there would be areas that you couldn’t possibly be able to not like.

To be at the fashion festival to me meant that even if you were not into fashion, they provided entertainment and ways to get you involved in programs and donations.

Experiences

I chose this place to go to because everyone got to be themselves and express who they are by letting loose. Also because I would be able to visit all of the other attractions while the fashion show hadn’t start yet.

There were so many booths to go to you can hear music being played around every 15 steps along with free samples of popular drinks.

Choices

I will use what I have learned from the fashion festival for when my street has a block party. Just like the festival there would be fashion, games, and food for all to enjoy.

What I prefer to aim towards the most is a way for everyone to be themselves and not fuss about what they do not like. Instead they would be time from time from their day just to enjoy themselves.

Future

I believe the fashion festival falls under the “knowledgeable” portion of the list, only because the festival was mostly about business and fund raisers.

Above all else the festival was well organized and sold very good products. I look forward to when it comes around in Chicago again.

IB learner profile

What I have learned from this festival is the it takes quite a lot of time to make art from scratch and handcraft it into something amazing for anyone to see.

A lot of dedication went in to the art that I had seen there and it was worth going to because I was able to learn about all the different ways to use decomposed wood for art.

Bucktown Arts Festival

My first impression upon arriving to the art festival was that it would be entirely about paintings and statues. They easily proved me wrong the moment I saw Papier-mâché animal figures.

Even glass can be turned into art depending on the right person to shape it into even something unheard of before like glass sculptures of animals; which would take lots of skill to pull off correctly.

Experiences

I chose to go to the art festival because just like the fashion fest, there were an abundance of attractions. The attractions there included a concert, a dance crew, and an overwhelming variety of art ranging from wood, to papier-mâché, to glass.

I can’t wait for what they have in store for next year and I really look forward to going again.

Choices

I strongly believe that the arts festival would fit under the “inquirer's” category because artists are always curious to see what they can make up out of items and materials that seem to have no further use. Their creations are amazingly beautiful. What I love about it is that it’s all hand made.

Another reason is because the people who are new to art would research the many ways to expose it to the world in vivid expression.
