PASA used datafiles from the Fall, 2015 to understand the locations of the current students, and also used files from 2013 and 2014 to compare and to assess trends in the District. Resident Students by Attendance Zone The first maps in the report show the geocoded students analyzed at the attendance zone level. Hassler, Kohrville, Blacksheer, and Krahn all saw slight declines in the geocoded student population, along with Benignus and Roth. Epps Island, Klenk, and Eiland also showed declines, but it important to remember that these numbers show the EE5 th grade and do not remove the EEPK students who attend the early education center. Zwink gained more than 100 geocoded elementary students in the last year. The next maps show the change in geocoded students at the intermediate school level. Hildebrandt gained more than 100 students, while Doerre, Kleb, and Klein all saw declines. All of the high school attendance zones increased in students over the last year, with Klein Oak gaining more than 200 students. Also shown is the recent change in free and reduced lunch students by elementary school attendance zone. All but one of the elementary attendance zones gained free and reduced lunch students, with Benignus being the one school to lose students of this subset of the population, and the loss at Benignus was only 1 student.  The next set of maps in this chapter shows the number of students currently living in each Planning Unit, as well as the growth and decline in students between September, 2014 and September, 2015.  Some Planning Units – in blue and purple – saw declines in students in the last year, while the areas in red showed the greatest increase in students.  The areas that showed the largest increase were the Northampton and Auburn Lakes areas, as well as Twin Falls. 

 Recent Student Trends by Development                                                       This year, the most significant net growth of new students added to Klein I.S.D. occurred in actively‐building subdivisions (922 added students over the past year), while built‐out subdivisions lost 228 students.   The number of students living in apartments also increased by 284 additional students, and mobile home parks gained 120 students.                             The actively‐growing subdivisions that added the most students this year included Twin Falls (96 added students), Preserve at Northampton (78 students), and Louetta Glen Phase 2 (71 added students).     The older, built‐out subdivisions both added and lost students.  More of the measured  subdivisions lost students than gained students this year, and the net was a slight decrease in student population.   This decrease was smaller in the elementary school grades (a loss of 62

students) than in the secondary grades (a loss of 166 students.)   The largest losers were: Inwood West (‐41), Memorial Chase I (‐32), and Willowood I and Terranova West, both of which lost 31 students.  The largest increase was in Northcliffe Manor (44 students gained,) Auburn Lakes Reserve (37 students gained,) and Gosling Pines (25 students gained.)  Interestingly, the largest gainers were subdivisions that were built out in the last 10 years, and also subdivisions that were built out in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  Age, alone, does not seem to be a determining factor as to which are likely to add future students.  Based on demographic precepts, people migrate due to fairly predictable patterns and for fairly predictable reasons.  There are both “push” and “pull” factors operating.   In the past 35 years, the “pull” factors to Klein I.S.D. have revolved around available land – a filtered effect from the south ‐‐ with a stream of people rapidly moving outward to the northern portions of the Houston Metro Area.  These relocatees have been seeking the ability to be “pioneers” in a new, secure environment, and seeking to benefit from new infrastructure, including new schools, and a newly planned environment that would yield a high quality of life.    Of course, last, but not least, they were seeking ‐‐ and using – easily obtained mortgages (from 2002 through 2007).  Starting slowly over the past two years, and now accelerating, particularly this summer, younger homebuyers are re‐entering the housing market by raising their credit scores and by taking advantage of more readily available mortgages, even despite the rising interest rates.   Also, recovery in a desirable school district like Klein relies less on local traits, and more on the national economy.  The migration patterns which have encouraged relocation to Klein I.S.D. are still there – but at a much lower rate.
