SERVICE LEARNING

ByBen Cogdell

SAE’S CAMPING FOR CANCER

•Camping for Cancer was a fundraiser that SAE did to raise money for the American Cancer

Society. The idea came from when they did Camping for Katrina a few years ago and that worked

very well.

Camping for Cancer (cont’d)

What we did for camping for cancer was collect any donations from local organizations to support our cause.

Then, we camped in our front yard for three nights. While camping, we collected as many cans as we could so at the end of the week we could cash them in for more money for the cause.

Service Learning

Service Learning is the incorporation of community service within an educational system.

The national service learning website is http://www.servicelearning.org/.

What I Learned

In doing my community service, I learned that it can be a lot of fun if you use your imagination to think of interesting ways to help the community. I think camping for cancer was a lot of fun because I got to hang out with my friends while supporting a good cause. It also feels good to give back to the community.

My Experience

Camping for cancer was a lot of fun because I like camping and it helped out a good cause.

One of the things that was not so fun was crushing all the cans and pulling off the tabs.

My History of Community Service

Throughout the years, I have participated in many different types of community service.

Two of the biggest jobs that I did was when I went to Belize and Alaska on two different mission trips

I went to Belize after sophomore year and Alaska after junior year

Both of these trips were organized with the local Methodist Church.

Belize

Belize was my favorite mission trip of all because it was in such a different place than I was used to.

When we got there we had to travel miles down a dirt road in a hot bus.

We helped out a small village there that were Christians. It was amazing seeing how these people lived. We added support beams to a house and built a staircase on another one as well as many other things.

Alaska

Alaska was also an interesting experience because it was also a very different place.

Because of the time of year, it was light outside until about twelve at night.

We worked at a summer camp and helped fix it up for more kids to come.

Alaska (cont’d)

Another thing we did in Alaska was pick up trash on the side if the road by a local church.

There were many bottles and trash on the side of the road and I believe we picked up trash on about one mile of the road.

We also cleaned out a storage house at the church.

Community Service Overrall

I think that if I had not already done much community service in high school then it would have been much harder to do for this class.

FYE has helped me learn many things about studying and learning to help my community
