DEMON POSSESSION AND

MANIFESTATION

By Bishop Cornelius Bowser

Luke 9:1, When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases. (from New International Version)

Preaching The Kingdom Of The Gospel

The main objective of a ministry is not to cast out demons, but to preach the gospel to the lost.

But in order to successfully preach the gospel power and demonstration of the spirit, it is vital that we have authority over satanic evil, and that we exercise this authority.

Kingdom Continues

However, no great spiritual awakening has ever come to any nation until, first, the church has learned to discern demons and cast them out.

Every Christian can become a devil master at once by receiving a clear understanding of the work of demons, and their legal defeat at Calvary.

Kingdom Continues

Luke 10:17-19, 17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." 18 He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” (from New International Version)

Kingdom Continues

1 John 3:8, 8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. (from New International Version)

Every disciple of the Messiah has authority to command demons and destroy their work.

What Are Demons

The word daimon or daimonion seems originally to have had two closely related meanings; a deity, and a spirit, superhuman or supernatural.

Deut 32:17, 17 They sacrificed to demons, which are not God--gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your fathers did not fear. (from New International Version)

What Are Demons Ps 106:37, 37 They sacrificed their sons and

their daughters to demons. (from New International Version)

Acts 17:18,18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to dispute with him. Some of them asked, "What is this babbler trying to say?" Others remarked, "He seems to be advocating foreign gods." They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. (from New International Version)

What Are Demons

In the above reference scriptures the word daimon or daimonion is used to identify demons as a god or deity.

Demons are also another name for fallen angels who joined the kingdom of Satan in rebellion against Yahweh.

What Are Demons Rev 12:8-9, 9 The great dragon was hurled

down-that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. (from New International Version)

Matt 25:41, 41 Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. (from New International Version)

What Are Demons

How many demons are there? Well the scriptures informs us that Satan is the dragon that swept a third of the stars from the sky and flung them to the earth.

We can say a third of the angels which were in heaven fell with Satan to earth, where Satan now rules in the hearts of unbelievers.

What Are Demons

Rev 12:2-4, 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads. 4 His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that he might devour her child the moment it was born. (from New International Version)

What Are Demons

Eph 2:1, As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (from New International Version)

Revelation 12:9 it said about Satan, “who leads the whole world astray.”

What Are Demons

Satan is the god of this world. 2 Cor 4:4, 4 The god of this age has

blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (from New International Version)

He, also, has control over them.

What Are Demons 1 John 5:19, 19 We know that we are

children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. (from New International Version)

The evil or wicked one is Satan. Matt 13:19, 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. (from New International Version)

What Are Demons

Mark 4:15, 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. (from New International Version)

What Are Demons

Satan and his angels are spirits. Heb 1:14, Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? (from New International Version)

Demons are angels who were cast out heaven and has been confined to the lower or earthly realm.

What Are Demons 2Peter 2:4 For if God didn't spare the angels who

sinned, but threw them down into Tartarus and delivered them to be kept in chains of darkness until judgment. (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

To understand the word “tartarus” let’s look at some of its definitions.

It signifies to consign to Tartarus, which is neither Sheol nor hades nor hell, but the place where those angels whose special sin is referred to in that passage are confined "to be reserved unto judgment"; the region is described as "pits of darkness." RV (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words, Copyright (c)1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers)

What Are Demons

The words of the original Scriptures rendered "hell" in English are three in number. With a solitary exception (2 Peter 2:4, tartaroo, to "incarcerate") they are the only words thus translated. (from The New Unger's Bible Dictionary. Originally published by Moody Press of Chicago, Illinois. Copyright (c) 1988.)

What Are Demons

NT:5020, tartaroo (tar-tar-o'-o); from Tartaros (the deepest abyss of Hades); to incarcerate in eternal torment (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright (c) 1994, Biblesoft and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

What Are Demons

"Tartarus." It is strange to find Peter using this pagan term, which represents the Greek hell, though treated here not as equivalent to "Gehenna," but as the place of detention until the judgment. (from Vincent's Word Studies in the New Testament, Electronic Database. Copyright (c) 1997 by Biblesoft)

What Are Demons

Tartarus is a place which either angels are confined to as a place being restricted in movement or the realm of darkness where Satan and his angels have been cast down to here on earth.

The footnote in the NIV says that gloomy dungeons is translated in some manuscript as chains of darkness. Let’s see what Barns said in his commentary about tartarus.

What Are Demons

It may be still true that the mass are con fined within the limits of their dark abode; and it may even be true also that Satan and those who axe permitted to roam the earth are under bondage, and are permitted to range only within certain bounds, and that they are so secured that they will be brought to trial at the last day. (from Barnes' Notes, Electronic Database. Copyright (c) 1997 by Biblesoft)

What Are Demons

Clarke Adam’s commentary stated: when applied to spirits must be interpreted spiritually; and thus tartaroosas (NT:5020) will import that God cast the apostate angels out of his presence into that zophos (NT:2217), blackness of darkness (2 Peter 2:17; Jude 13), where they will be forever banished from the light of his countenance…

What Are Demons

…plunged into the torpid boundary of this created system would be from the light of the sun and the benign operations of the material heavens. (from Adam Clarke's Commentary, Electronic Database. Copyright (c) 1996 by Biblesoft)

What Are Demons

Their final doom is hell, for a time they are permitted to roam beyond it in 'the darkness of this world.' Slaves of Tartarus. (from Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary, Electronic Database. Copyright (c) 1997 by Biblesoft)

What Are Demons

Jude 5-6, 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. (from New International Version)

What Are Demons So, then, Satan and his angels have been

cast to earth and operate in the spiritual realm of darkness. Therefore he is called the prince or ruler of the kingdom of the air.

Eph 2:1-2, 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (from New International Version)

What Are Demons

The word “air” means “atmosphere.” It is the empty space above the earth or the surface of the earth.

This atmosphere is where Satan and his angels are confined to and it is called the realm of darkness.

What Are Demons

Eph 6:12, 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (from New International Version)

Demons Without A Body

A demon is a, spirit being, just like you and me.

As you yearn to do good, to speak kind words, to hear music, to see the flowers, to express yourself in conversation, and to respond to impulses with some expression.

Demon spirits yearn to express themselves.

Demons Without A Body

But since they have no bodies of their own, they must wander through the land seeking a body which to carry out their mission of evil.

Matt 12:43, 43 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. (from New International Version)

The Difference Between Body And Spirit

I have a body, but I am a spirit. My spirit dwells in my body. I express myself (my spirit) with the faculties of my body.

You can see my body but you cannot see me because the real me is a spirit living inside my body.

My body is the house my spirit lives in.

The Difference Between Body And Spirit

When my body dies it will return to the dust but (my spirit) shall never die.

I shall return to God where I came. I express myself with my body. If my

body were taken away, I (my spirit) could not express itself.

The Difference Between Body And Spirit

Sever my tongue and my spirit could not talk.

Destroy my ears and I could not hear. Blind my eyes and I could not see. Even though my eyes would be blind,

my ears deaf, and my tongue removed, my spirit would still be there, but it could not see, hear, or speak.

The Difference Between Body And Spirit

Demons are wicked, hateful, and destructive. Demons are spirits without bodies in which to dwell.

Demons are evil spirits without bodies with which to express themselves in this world. They long to find expression but cannot do so until they are in possession of a body.

Satan’s Tool For Destruction

Demons delight to use people to do their dirty work.

John 13:27, 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him (from New International Version)

Satan’s Tool For Destruction

Their greatest power to defile to destroy and to abuse people is through another human being.

God uses human instruments to minister to the human family likewise, Satan uses human instruments to destroy the human family.

Satan’s Tool For Destruction

2 Cor 11:13-15, 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve. (from New International Version)

Satan’s Tool For Destruction

Demons most useful agents: Since a human body has the broadest

means of expression, having been the only creation made in the likeness of God, demons seek as their highest prize to enter human beings.

Demon Manifestation Demons talk. In the Bible, we have the

record of demons talking. They talk through a faculties, which they have possessed.

Mark 3:10-12, 10 For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11 Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God." 12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell who he was. (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Luke 4:40-41, 40 When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ. (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Mark 1:23-26, 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-the Holy One of God!" 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Demons are intelligent. Matt 8:29, 29 "What do you want with

us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” (from New International Version)

When demons possess a person they can be identified by:

Demon Manifestation

1. They speak or understand unknown languages.

2. Know things they shouldn’t. 3. Can predict the future. 4. Intense hatred for holy things. 5. They exhibit beyond mortal strength.

Demon Manifestation Demons my call for reinforcements. Matt 12:43-45, 43 "When an evil spirit comes out

of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation." (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Demons recognize and obey those who have power over them.

When Jesus was met by those who were demon possessed, the demons would often cry out: we know who you are, you are the Son of God.

Demon Manifestation Acts 19:13-16, 13 Some Jews who went around

driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out." 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15[One day] the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?" 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Demons are the cause of many diseases in people.

Many human sickness and diseases begin from a tiny germ, an evil satanic life, sent to live in and possess the human body and to destroy it.

As long as that life, the spirit of infirmity, exists in the body the growth or disease live and contains its destructive work.

Demon Manifestation

Jesus healed the sick and cast out demons.

Acts 10:38, 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation Matt 8:16, 16 When evening came, many

who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. (from New International Version)

Luke 13:16, 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?" (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Luke 13:11-13, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity." 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Matt 12:27-28, And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Matt 9:32-33, 32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation Mark 9:25, 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was

running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again." (from New International Version)

Luke 4:38-39, 38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them. (from New International Version)

Demon Manifestation

Demons cannot possess a saved person.

1 John 5:18, 18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. (from New International Version)

Manifestation Continues

Rom 8:38-39, 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (from New International Version)

Manifestation Continues

1 Peter 3:22, 22 Who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand-with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. (from New International Version)

Eph 2:6, 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. (from New International Version)

We Are Secure In Yahshua’s Hands

John 10:27-30, 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one. (from New International Version)

Secure Continues

Heb 7:25, 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. (from New International Version)

Deut 33:3, 3 Surely it is you who love the people; all the holy ones are in your hand. At your feet they all bow down, and from you receive instruction. (from New International Version)

Portals And Doorways

A portal is the window a demon uses to gain entrance into our body or soul.

These portals or open windows demons uses are:

1. Witchcraft. 2. Consulting the dead. 3. Tarot cards. 4. The occult (knowledge of the hidden). 5. Idolatry. 6. Ouija board.

Portals And Doorways

Deut 18:14, 14 The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. (from New International Version)

Ps 106:37-38, 37 They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. 38 They shed innocent blood. (from New International Version)

Portals And Doorways 1 Cor 10:19-21, 19 Do I mean then that a

sacrifice offered to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons , not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons . 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons. (from New International Version)

Portals And Doorways How does a person become possessed by a

demon? Satan gains dominion over man through sin

and that is the same way demons come in and possess a person.

Eph 2:1-2, 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (from New International Version)

Portals And Doorways

In Eph. 2:2 Paul says the spirit of Satan is now at work in those who are disobedient.

Another door way is disbelief. 2 Cor 4:4, 4 The god of this age has

blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (from New International Version)

Deliverance The English word for deliver is used in two

senses, (1) "to set free," etc., (2) "to give up or over.“

In the Old Testament the word means “to save”, or “to recover’”

In the New Testament deliver means “to rescue.” Also, in the New Testament "save" takes largely the place of "deliver" in the Old Testament, and the idea is raised to the spiritual and eternal.

Deliverance When one is demon possess they need deliverance. The Jews tried to exorcize (one that binds by an

oath or spell, by implication an "exorcist" conjurer) people but failed.

Acts 19:13-15,13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" NKJV

Deliverance

Acts 19:16, 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. NKJV

We do not exorcize people. Just because unbelieving Jews practice this custom doesn’t mean the Bible command us to do so.

Deliverance

We do not exorcize demons we cast them out, expel them, drive them out with the power of God, or command them to leave with the Authority of Yahshua

Matt 10:1, He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. (from New International Version)

Deliverance

The true way for deliverance from demons is through the power of God, and prayer.

Mark 9:29, He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer. (from New International Version)
