Its Sustainabil- ity Committee strives to bring the leading green trends and issues, as well as the latest technology and its subsequent applications, to the forefront of ULI’s private and public sector members. ULI Washington’s most recent sustainability event focused on the future of sustainability, ex- amining what it looks like and what the major changes will be in how we live and work. Peter Garforth, principal, Garforth International, LLC presented, “Sustainable Energy Planning – A Tale of Two Cit- ies,” which focused on a grow- ing concern of cities around the world – ensuring communities have affordable, reliable clean energy. He noted how critical it is to understand the importance of sound energy planning in a region’s overall competiveness in terms of quality employment and overall attractiveness, and was encouraged with cities like Arlington, VA and Holland, MI, which have committed to devel- op and implement challenging long-term energy plans – de- spite the sometimes conflicting issues of reliability, costs and environmental outcomes. Garforth reminded attendees that the benefits that accrue from world-class energy per- formance in terms of supply reliability and quality, overall cost and environmental impact combine to make these cities more attractive to investors and residents alike. Scott Sklar, president, The Stella Group, Ltd, discussed renewable energy and how important this sector is in sus- tainability planning. He noted that in 2012 major milestones were reached for renewable energy, and that the industry attracted a whopping $269 billion of global private sec- tor investment and that more utility-scale renewables came on-line in the USA than natural gas powered electricity. He reminded session attend- ees that renewable energy, high value energy efficiency, and en- ergy storage are all high return strategies, and when blended, even greater savings can be realized to reduce operating costs for building owners. The last presenter of ULI Washington’s most recent sus- tainability event, Bill Reed, AIA, LEED, Regenesis Group, presented a session titled, “Regenerative Development and Design - Re-membering the Patterns of Life,” which examined the true meaning behind sustainability – sustain- ing all life. He stated that the trend toward making buildings, cars, light bulbs, products and processes more efficient is just the beginning, and sought to help attendees understand the bigger implications of their actions through the conscious understanding of a whole sys- tem approach to life-giving processes that shape the places we live. Reed asked attendees to remember that the real mean- ing of development is to ‘create new potential,’ and introduced practical concepts of working consciously with the living system processes that support life on Earth. The future of the DC re- gion looks bright with leading thinkers - and doers - working together to improve state of development and the environ- ment in the region. ULI Wash- ington has provided a platform to share the latest in great- est sustainability efforts and thought, and we look forward to future sessions when we can present even more case studies, projects and best practices of these environmental initiatives in action throughout the Wash- ington DC region.
