This year, as I have for the last three or four years, I issued a plea to Sandpiper residents to save their empty toilet and paper towel rolls. As in the past, Sandpiper residents answered with a re-sounding yes! Our daughter Kimberley is a Kin-dergarten teacher at Davis Drive Elementary School in Cary, NC. Every year, in early December, the class does a holiday workshop pro-ject. The object of the unit is to teach the children the concept of work, payment for work and the di-vision of labor. The class works on six different craft projects. They make tin punch ornaments, tri-bead ornaments, bell necklaces,

snowman faces, wrapping paper bags and finally ‘poppers’. The candy poppers are made with the paper rolls. Each roll is decorated with colored tissue paper and then candy is placed inside the roll. It is covered with additional tissue pa-per to make the popper. Once the manufacturing is completed, each child is paid with pennies. They can then use their money to purchase crafts from the class store as holiday gifts. Kim returned to Raleigh after Thanksgiving this year with four large bags of rolls. Her class will certainly be Top Producers thanks to Sandpiper Bay Residents.

Here we are in the last month of 2008 and w e are still golf ing in pretty good w eather. Okay, okay; so it w asn’t too toasty during the SBMGA Championship in Novem-ber. The cold didn’t seem to affect Bill Calhoun as he w on the overall low gross with a score of 164, to remain the SBMGA Champion for another year. John “JJ” Whalen playing from the senior tees w as the low net w inner w ith an overall net score of 133. Playing from the Senior Tees, the overall w inner was Gary Swanson w ith a low gross of 156. The tournament w as very well run and the support from the Sandpiper Bay Golf and Coun-try Club w as great. In the “Beat the Pro” Tourna-ment held yesterday, 12/06/08, the w eather was perfect for this time of year and there were some members w ho beat the pro and there w ere some that didn’t. As a matter of fact there were 25 play-ers (SBMGA and Piperettes) w ho beat Tim Tilma’s score of 76 on the Bay/Sand courses. Those in the latter category will just have to try harder next year. I ought to know as I w as one of those who shot w ell on the Bay only to f ind the Sand w as a bit too much on this particular day. This too w as a great tournament to round out the

year. As w e draw down on the last few days of 2008 we w ant to thank Mike Finkelstein, Chairman of the Tournament Committee and his staff for developing the tourna-ments, w orking w ith the Club to get the best support possible and then seeing that all the tourna-ments w ere run as well as the members expected. Mike has served in this position for the past three years and he and his com-mittee members certainly put all they had into every aspect of tour-nament golf. Robert Nicolett i has been appointed Chairman of the Tournament Committee and he will be assisted by Don Moore and Bob Eason. This team is up to the challenge and it is up to the mem-bership to help make them suc-cessful. Other appointments over the last couple of months w ere Joe Martere to Chairman of the Handicaps Committee and Mike Matlock to Chairman of the Games Committee. All these men and there committee members shoulder much of the responsibil-ity that make the SBMGA suc-cessful. “The Silver Tees and the rules governing them are in” ! At the last General Membership meeting this issue w as posed to the Member-ship and the Membership had the

chance to vote on it in November. The Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club management ac-cepted the ballots, review ed them and tallied them. The results w ere 58 votes for and 28 opposed. The General Membership w ill be made aw are of this decision at the Gen-eral Membership on 10 Decem-ber, but the actual inclusion of the Silver Tees into the w eekly games or any of the SBMGA tournaments will start at a later date determined by the Board. Finally, It has been another great year here at Sandpiper Bay and for the SBMGA. The Board w ould like to thank those responsible for allow -ing us the space in the Sentinel and for all they do. The help pro-vided to the SBMGA is invaluable and very much appreciated. The Board also extends to everyone a very happy holiday season and the best of New Years for all. Hit ‘em straight! Or maybe draw or fade on some. Oh, yeah and don’t forget to hold your head still, bend your knees slightly, take your back sw ing slow on plane and sw ing through. These are some of our favorite things to remember yada, yada, yada!! Happy New Year y’all!

    December Ladies luncheon

December - The December Ladies Holiday Luncheon was held on De-cember 4th at Joe's Bar and Grill in North Myrtle Beach. The luncheon was hosted by Angela Nicholson, Fran Hecht, Mary Stern, and Peggy Donawick and was attended by 75 women. Because of the generosity of all who attended, as well as some who could not, donations collected for Hope Harbor Home totaled $1020.00. A visit from Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus added to the spirit of the festivities. Congratulations to Monica Gallus for winning the $50 gift certificate from Joe's Bar and Grill.
