Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge was established August 19, 1941. Both commercial and subsistence fishing were strongly affected by the huge oil spill which occurred on March 27, 1989. When the tanker hit Bligh Reef, it spilled almost 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound. Response teams were unable to contain the oil before it was carried by currents throughout the entire area, ending as far south as Ivanof Bay on the Alaska Peninsula. The oil first hit Kodiak area beaches in mid-April. The salmon season was closed due to the fear of oil contamination of fish. Settlements from the oil spill have helped preserve a variety of Kodiak's public lands, adding acreage to the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, Afognak Island State Park and Shuyak Island State Park. So they built the park to save animals. Which is why they made it a National Park.

What types of rock are on Kodiak Island? Deep-sea rock, metamorphic rocks in this belt include quartz-mica schist, marble, megahertz, green schist, blue schist, and epidotic amphibolites.

• How is this land form currently moving The Kodiak Islands are composed of a series of northeast-trending belts of schist and deep-sea rock types that are interpreted as having been accreted to the continental margin during several discrete phases of subduction. The Kodiak Islands schist terrene is the oldest of these accretionary belts and crops out discontinuously along the northwest side of the islands.

Kodiak Island , 5,363 sq mi (13,890 sq km), c.100 mi (160 km) long and 10-60 mi (16-96 km) wide, off S Alaska, separated from the Alaska Peninsula by Shelikof Strait. Alaska's largest island, Kodiak is mountainous and heavily forested in the north and east; the native grasses in the south offer good pasturage for cattle and sheep.

Well there is recycling because The Native Village of Port Lions has a stellar Environmental Department dedicated to identifying and planning cost-effective management for local environmental issues. The village has an extensive recycling program that accepts aluminum cans, all plastic products, cardboard and paper (including catalogs and magazines), all electronic devices (including televisions and computers), used ink cartridges, used lead acid and dry cell batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, oil-based and latex paint, used anti-freeze, aerosol cans, and small propane cylinders. The village also accepts 55-gallon drums and junk vehicles.

The only technology they use is the technology to clean the cabins after people sleep there.
