HAPPY EPIPHANY!
After the excitement and energy of the Christmas season, it’s natural to feel a bit of let-down as
we start the new year. The season of Epiphany can get lost in the shuffle. This is too bad, because
Epiphany has deep meaning in many ways.
Epiphany is about making things clear which had been hidden, letting the light shine. The
season always begins with Jesus’ baptism and the manifestation that he is God’s beloved Son. The
season ends just before Lent with the account of Jesus’ transfiguration, when he was again shown to be
God’s precious Son. Throughout the season of Epiphany, we consider the mystery and wonder of the
incarnation – God’s coming to be with us in the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. This is also a
missionary season, when we let the light of God’s love in Jesus shine for all people. The idea of this is
not to be aggressive and pushy, but to let all people know by what we say and do that God’s love
extends to everyone. No one is left out of God’s love as we experience it in Jesus.
This is a good season for us at St. George’s to think about how we can share God’s love with
the community of Carmichael and the surrounding area. What is God doing in our area, and how does
and how does God invite us to be a part of that? Especially as a Total Ministry congregation, we are
called to be a missional church which connects in creative ways with our larger community.
Epiphany is also the start of a new calendar year. The new year is an opportunity to have fresh
beginnings, individually and as a congregation. How might we offer this new segment of time of the
year 2014 to God? I’m not thinking about new year’s resolutions, which we tend to make and then
forget. I hope that we will consider a deeper commitment to God as we begin the new year. As we
look ahead to 2014, what is God calling us to do in our personal lives and as a parish? Time is a gift
of God, and how can we best use this gift of time in 2014?
I wish us all an Epiphany Season and New Year full of the light and love of Christ!
In Christ,
_ Father Ray Hess

...Mel
For your years as our Senior Warden
Well done!!!
Our Senior Warden Wow it's been three years since I first became Senior Warden at St.
George's. Three very short years! It's been a time of joy and sadness and a time of
learning for me in a period of change for Saint Georges.
In those three short years we have had a minister retire, Father John and new
minister Father Ray, join us. We have seen members die and children grow. The one
common thread through these years has been the love and joy that our members have
shown for one another.
It has been my pleasure to work not only with the vestry and the ministers but the
entire congregation as we move toward becoming a total ministry congregation.
It has also been my delight serving St. George's. I know that our church will move
forward and I leave the vestry with a sense of pride in all our small congregation has
succeeded in doing, not particularly with brick-and-mortar, but in a renewal of our faith
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Yes, I must admit that I do look forward to taking some time to sit back reflect and
pray, but I will still be active.Senior Warden, Mel Rose

WOMAN’S GUILD
Starting a new year with the
opportunity of fresh starts in many ways!
The officers of the Women’s Guild look
forward to working with members of the
congregation to increase the ways in
which everyone can support our church

we have enjoyed over the years.
We are looking at possibly
changing the day and time of our
monthly meetings from the third
Tuesdays of the month. A timely notice
will be announced/posted for our next

bulletins and plan to attend.
We wish
everyone a Joyous

As this issue of the By George comes out, we are entering the season of Epiphany – the “Aha”
season where we hear Gospels that make Christ known to the Apostles and us. As usual I was
initially stumped about what to write this month, especially while immersed in Christmas shopping
and activities. One of the things Sandy and I have done for years is to give our nieces and nephews
Christmas ornaments and this has progressed to also giving them to great nephews and “virtual
granddaughters” (too long of a story to explain in this article). Anyway in looking for ornaments, we
weren’t finding anything that called to us until I ran across ornaments of the “minions” from the
movie Despicable Me.
If you aren’t familiar with the movies story line, basically the bad guy Gru, adopts three cute
little orphan girls as a means of infiltrating his arch nemesis’ impregnable fortress. Long story short
the little girls melt Gru’s harden heart. This could be seen as an Epiphany story with Gru finding the
little bit of Christ in himself and with the help of the girls and bring that bit to fullness and
overcoming his evil side. Now I think all of us have that yen and yang of good and evil in us,
fortunately for all of us, most people are dominated by their good side.
And while the change in Gru was heartwarming, I found the “minions,” the little guys who don’t
think in terms of good or evil, rather simply build or tear down, seemed much more interesting to me.
Throughout the movie these guys do the bidding of Gru – as would be expected of good minions. This
got me to wondering how much of our lives do we just go about our daily lives not really thinking in
terms of good or evil, but doing what is asked of us at work or at home without a lot of thought. I
admit spending any amount of contemplation concerning the relative morale value or the good and
evil of having a donut rather than bran flakes for breakfast wouldn’t be a good use of my time. On the
other hand, it might make sense to spend some time contemplating how I respond to someone hitting
me up for change in a parking lot. I’m not endorsing a response either way, just that whatever we
chose to do or not do, we should be thinking about it.
Later in Epiphany we will hear the passage from Matthew where Jesus tells us we are the “Light
of the World.” That light is Jesus shining through us, so I’m hoping that each of you will have an
“epiphany moment” in your lives, taking some time to think about what it means to be that light to
those around us. I pray that we don’t simply go through life as minions thoughtlessly going about our
daily lives. Or if we are going to be minions, be minions of Christ and do his bidding always – Love
God and Love our Neighbors.
