Thoughts From Our PIC (Priest in Charge)
“Time to Grow!” The Lenten Season is a time to grow. Many people see Lent as a very serious, somber time of
year. It does not need to be this way! Lent has a serious, penitential aspect, but basically it is an
opportunity to grow in our relationship with God. It is a season set aside for us to focus on our faith
and on God’s will for our lives. This is very positive!
On Sunday February 17th, we had Psalm 1 in our Sunday readings. This psalm says, “They are
like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season.” Lent is a time to plant ourselves by
God’s stream of living water, so that we may grow spiritually. Spiritual growth really means to grow
in love for God and other people.
How can we plant ourselves by streams of water? There are many ways to do this. One is to
be sure to participate in our worship, beginning with the Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday March
6th at 7 p.m. Our Lenten worship will be designed to focus on the themes of penitence, reflection, and
prayer (see Deacon Bob’s article in this newsletter about our Lenten worship).
Another way to grow is to attend our Lenten adult confirmation/inquirers’ class. This class will
give teaching about the basics of our church and our faith. We will have sessions about our theology,
history, worship, scripture, and church structure. This class is for adults who want to be confirmed
and also for anyone who wants to learn more about their church and faith. All are welcome! The class
will meet from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on five Saturday mornings, starting March 9.
There are many other avenues for growth. You could read the Forward Day by Day booklet
each day of Lent. This has a Bible verse from the Prayer Book daily lectionary (calendar of readings)
with a meditation. We also have the Living Compass booklets for Lent which will be available (a gift
from our supply priest Anne McKeever) as of the First Sunday in Lent on March 10th . These have
meditations for each day of Lent. Using one of these booklets along with some simple prayers only
takes about five or ten minutes and is a wonderful daily discipline. Taking some quiet time to listen to
music or to take a walk is a good way to reflect and pray. Doing some action to help others is also a
path of growth. You could do volunteer work in your community or through our parish outreach, or
give some money to a good cause.
This Lent, let’s be like the tree planted by a fresh stream of water and grow in our relationship
with God!
In Jesus’ love,
Father Ray

Senior WardenOver the past two years our vestry and our church has had the pleasure of the leadership
of Sandra Crenshaw as our senior warden. Her skill as a leader and her laid-back approach to
her duties made being on the vestry a pleasure, not the drudgery one might expect. I hope she
does not mind if I sometimes ask her advice.
We are very fortunate that Father Ray has agreed to remain our priest in charge instead
of spending all his time on the golf links or ski slopes. His leadership has helped all us to grow
in our faith. Next time you see him a nice thank you would be appreciated. (Word is that he
does like hugs!)
With a new Bishop, The Reverend Megan Traquair taking over the reins of our diocese
in a few months, this should prove to be an interesting year.
It was a pleasure to attend the ordination of Julie Vice at the Trinity Cathedral. Most
have gotten to know Julie over the last few years as she spent time with us. I personally got to
know her several years ago when we were both in a study group together, learning and
expanding our preaching skills.
St. George’s was well represented at the service with at least a dozen from our church
attending. I always love to attend high services with all the bells and whistles. I’m not sure a
steady diet of that type of service would work for me, but I do love the bells on special
occasions. (The smells are now a thing of the past at the Cathedral, replaced with rapidly
waving colored ribbons (which makes my nose happy). To see our Cathedral overflowing with
priests, deacons and just friends of the three candidates was a joy! The free food didn’t hurt
either!Mel Rose, Senior Warden

At the annual meeting I reported on the worship committee, thanking the members for their work on our
weekly services. At our last worship committee meeting, as we were looking at seasonal changes for Lent and
Easter, I wondered how many folks really notice the seasonal changes. Using PowerPoint instead of the Book
of Common Prayer folks don’t weekly see all of the or’s and may’s in the little notes throughout the Eucharist
service. If you take separate trails at each of the or’s and may’s, by the time you’ve got past the third page of the
service you could have 108 different services and you have just gotten to the Gospel. So while we have a Book
of Common Prayer we don’t use it commonly thanks to all the options.
While most seasons the changes are minor I was reminded that for Lent and Easter there are some very
noticeable changes coming especially for the 10:30 service. First the opening “salutation” changes from
“Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” To which we respond “And blessed be his kingdom, now and
forever. Amen.” Instead we will hear “Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.” And we will responds “His
Mercy endures for ever.” And then instead of the Glory which we’ve been singing, on the First Sunday of Lent
we will have the Great Litany and on the following Sundays the Decalogue, followed by the Confession. The
Confession moving from after the sermon to the beginning of the service. Then things settle down a bit and
follow our normal sequence, with a change in Eucharistic Prayers, to one a bit more penitential, and saying the
traditional Lord’s Prayer. At the end of the service after the Post Communion prayer we add a “solemn collect”
which includes a response by the congregation. Then the blessing and recessional hymn, when we get to the
dismissal we drop the Alleluias.
Easter season becomes noticeable because we no longer say the decalogue and we drop the confession
altogether throughout the season and there is no solemn collect at the end. And finally we are back to the
Alleluias. The rest of the year the seasonal changes are much less noticeable, alternating the Eucharistic prayers
and possibly which service music we use and version of the Lord’s Prayer.
The alternatives offered in the Prayer Book aren’t there to confuse us, but rather enrich the services,
tailoring them to fit the season or what is happening in the life of the congregation. While there is a basic
structure, the various twists and turns we make selecting options allows us to have our Christmas Eve Service,
the Animal Blessing and add some freshness to the many Sunday services during the long season of Pentecost.
Thinking of changes, it dawned on me that I should mention that the Worship Committee is working out the
logistics of offering a chalice of grape juice for those who would prefer not to take the wine, or children whose
parents prefer they don’t. Our plan is to begin offering grape juice during Pentecost. All different, at the same
time being much the same.
As we finish Epiphany with our Mardi Gras service and Brunch, look for the changes in the Lenten
Sunday services. Changes which are designed to help us take on the reflective nature of the Lenten Season.Deacon Bob
