Buddhism originated in India, but was later spread to Taiwan in the 16th century. In Taiwan there are 4.9 million individuals who practice Buddhism. Buddhism followers chant mantras and sutras, and meditate. Buddhism is the most practiced religion.

• In the year of 1949, thousands of Muslims went to Taiwan. This was the beginning of Islam in Taiwan

•Today, if you are a Muslim living in Taiwan, it is very difficult to practice in the hectic city.

•In Taiwan there are three mosques called: Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Lungkang. There are two more in Taipei.

Protestantism was first introduced to Taiwan by Georgius Candidus of the Reformed Church of Holland.

Mahikari-Kyo was first introduced to Taiwan in 1983, but was only registered with the Ministry in 1996. Mahikari-Kyo is originally a Japanese religion founded by Yosikazu Okada in 1959. Followers of

this religion believe that anyone has the ability to attain healing powers by taking a three-day seminar on the Spiritual Art of Divine Light. Disciples of Mahikari-Kyo believe that happiness will be brought to the people by their teachings of the righteous law in the coming of the Holy Twenty-First Century. Since its introduction to Taiwan the religion has vastly developed and shrines are available all around the island.

A very new religion, Tienti Teachings stresses the coexistence of the spiritual and material world along with a world of universal love.

Founded in Iran is 1844, Baha’i is a small percentage of the religion in Taiwan. It believes that the family is the foundation of society and G-d has sent messengers, like Moses, to fulfill

his purpose.

Even though it is a new faith, I-Kuan Toa is the third most popular religion in Taiwan today. Made to distinguish common principles underlying Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism, this religion believes the world can achieve peace and harmony through unveiling the universal truths.
