SHOULD THE DEATH PENALTY BE BANNED?

By: Noah Royle

Thesis

Because of racial discrimination, high cost, and brutalization, the death penalty should be banned

Racial Discrimination

Two people, one black and one white, go on trial for the death penalty. It is four times more likely for the black suspect to get the death penalty for a similar crime, if not the same.

Example

High Cost

Millions are paid for a single execution Cheaper just to do life in prison without

parole

Cont.

There are studies that show California spending $250 million per execution in 2005

Executions cause distress, and are harsh on society.

Doctor’s are forced to do the opposite of what they have sworn to do, which is preserving life.

Carlos De Luna wrongfully put to death.

Cont.

De Luna was accused of murder, even though there was no evidence, other than being at the crime scene, to prove he had done anything

Although he was violating parole by drinking, being an eye witness at the time didn’t mean much

Executions gone wrong

Cont.

The execution of Clayton Lockett went horribly wrong in 1999 in Oklahoma

Lasted 43 minutes and Lockett died from an heart attack caused by the drugs given to him.

Brutal effects on society

The death penalty causes stress on a society, also it increases crime rates

Negative influence

People tend to enjoy watching executions of convicts

Inhumane habits

The death penalty is inhumane in itself, and there is always a chance something

can go wrong

Ways of execution
