Went to a jail to teach inmates Found conditions horrible Found mentally ill being kept in prison

LIFE AS A REFORMIST

Went all around America Tried to make life for prisoners better Fought for the better treatment and

rooms for the mentally ill

CIVIL WAR

Took a break from prison reform Joined the military as the

superintendent of the female nurses Was strict with nurses and made them

be the best Improved war hospital
