BHEL supported a series of 32 lectures from November 2011 to February 2012 covering nine manufacturing units across India on ‘Ethical leadership and values in management practices based on the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi’ for senior and mid-levels of executives. The value based leadership espoused by Mahatma Gandhi in public life is a perfect model to be emulated in all spheres of our activities.

The lectures opened with the sarva dharma prathana’ followed by a brief introduction, an A/v of photographs from Mahatma Gandhi’s life. The one and a half hour lecture covered the sterling qualities of a leader who had transformed in his quest for Truth and non-violence from and individual self to a leader with the welfare of all in his mind.

Mahatma Gandhi proved that moral and ethical behaviour is inexorably linked to the sincere understanding and practice of the philosophy of truth, nonviolence and purity of means. The value based leadership espoused by Mahatma Gandhi in public life is a perfect model to be emulated in all spheres of our activities. Corporate world, passing through turbulent times in terms of financial uncertain environment, corporate governance practices, value deficit has immensely benefitted from his thoughts and practices. If Truth is relevant, Gandhi is relevant. The Mahatma has inspired many and given them the strength to be the change they want to see in the world.

In year 2013, BHEL supported the ‘Gandhian Ideology Program’ (GIP) as part of People Development initiative of HRDI. A large number of recruitments have been made during recent years and the contribution of the talent is an essential component to performance. The focus of human resources to develop is not only each person’s competencies, but also their performance and potential in alignment with the on-going business challenges.

In the second phase 32 lectures are being organised on ethical leadership, values and organisational integrity in 23 manufacturing units for a mixed levels of executives to address the issues of ethics and values across different generation of employees. This is aimed at bringing about attitudinal changes required for coping up with value contribution in a shrinking market competing with the emerging business requirements to sustain long term growth of the company. Describe the inevitability of changes in the workplace with reference to ethical conduct of business and their role. The participants were explained the need for scanning the external & internal environment to develop sensitivity to develop the values of transparency, accountability, individual probity and commitment to meet rising expectations from diverse stakeholders.

The main themes covered were: Gandhian Ideology of Ethical Leadership Essence of Eternal values and their application in workplace Transparency, accountability and individual probity Organizational integrity and ethical business practices Trusteeship and societal responsibility

Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts and principles can guide the people in any part of the world as it has the strength to inspire and bring about change. His life was one of dedication, simplicity, transparency with truth as the guiding principle. The faculty members have been Smt. Shobhana Radhakrishna, Chief Functionary of ‘Gandhian Forum for Ethical Corporate Governance’ formed by SCOPE and Shri Ravi Chopra of the Centre for Gandhian Vision and Values.

ABOUT THE FACULTY: SMT. SHOBHANA RADHAKRISHNA

She is an ‘Eminent Citizen’ to the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and has had the fortune of spending a part of her life in Gandhiji’s Sewagram Ashram in India. She is on a mission to reintroduce Gandhian economics for ethical excellence to the new generation of business leaders by emphasizing on ethics, values, transparency, probity, accountability and integrity in personal and professional lives through lectures since the past two decades. Mahatma Gandhi’s life and thoughts can guide the people in any part of the world as it has the strength to inspire and bring about change. Her lectures give an insight into the Mahatma’s life that may not be found in books but is known only to people close to him.

Her background of Gandhian constructive work and social development led her to dedicate her life to the cause of serving the poor and the underprivileged for self-reliance by taking up grassroots constructive program for their empowerment.

Since last year she has delivered 140 lectures in 22 CPSEs namely BHEL, SAIL, NTPC, ONGC, BSNL, Coal India Limited, MMTC, HUDCO, NHPC, ITDC, BEL, CWC, NALCO, NSC, Indian Oil Limited, HHEC & HEC, NHDC, NMDC, EIL, OIL, WCL, MCL, PEC limited, TATA steels and India Hotel Pvt. Ltd. in their corporate offices & manufacturing units in different parts of India. The theme of the lectures is ‘Ethical leadership, values in management practices and social responsibilities based on the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi’.

On 30th January, 2012 & 2013 on Martyr’s day, she was invited to give lectures on Gandhian ideology which was organized by SCOPE, ONGC and SAIL for the executives of CPSUs. She has given regular lectures at the Institute of Government Account and Finance (INGAF), National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), National Academy of Customs Excise and Narcotics (NACEN), Indian Railways Institute of Transport Management (IRITM), Foreign Service Institute (FSI), Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), National Academy of Audit and Accounts (NAAA) and CSIR-IMMT, Government of India.

She has given lectures at IIMs, IITs, NIT-Raipur, NID-Ahamdabad, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), T.A.Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Symbiosis Centre for Management and HRD, Cotton College University, Mahatma Gandhi Antarashtriya Hindi Vishvavidyalaya and Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur for students and faculty members.In October 2009 and 2011 on the occasion of International day of non-violence, she was invited to deliver lectures at the Embassy of India in Tokyo, JICA, Universities and institutions in Japan. She is the guest lecturer for the Institute of Sathya Sai Education. She is the President of ‘Centre for Gandhian Vision and Values’, DISHA and Uttaranchal Development Institute.

She is a member of ‘Mahila Samakhya’ program of Government of Bihar and a former member of ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’ of Government of Tripura. She is the Chief Functionary of the ‘Gandhian Forum for Good Corporate Governance’ formed by SCOPE for CPSUs for promoting ethical business practices and organizational integrity.

RAVI CHOPRA He started his career as a journalist working for development agencies and national newspapers. He is the Founder Secretary of the ‘Centre for Gandhian Vision and Values’, Ship for World Youth Alumni Association-India and DISHA, national NGOs for complete self-reliance of the underprivileged communities through truthful and non-violent means. His commitment is to help the civil societies realize their entitlements for leading a life of self-respect and to stand up for their rights. He is involved in conducting the lectures in India and Japan on Gandhian ideology for ethical leadership and social responsibility. He has been motivating youth for taking part in development through volunteerism. As the founder President of the Indo-Japan Friendship Group, India, and member of Japan Business Forum of FICCI, he is actively promoting Indo-Japan relations, people to people contact and cross cultural relations for youth development and enhancing international cooperation. He is a member of the ‘Jal Biradari’, a national forum for conservation of water and natural resources.
