Pastor Mark Schwarzbauer PhDFamily Worship Center 3/29/15
Hebrews 10:10
“By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Part One: Called to the
Cross for Salvation
You are called to the cross for salvation• The Greek word for “salvation” is
σωτήριος (sótérios).• Saving~ The word first refers to
salvation from serious peril. • We are in serious peril without Jesus’
salvation.• Romans 6:23- the wages of sin is
death.
You are called to the cross for salvation• We cannot save ourselves. We need
someone with the cure.• His prevenient grace awakens us to our
need and gives us the power and opportunity to choose Christ.
• Hell is a real place and we need to be saved from it.
• Heaven is a real place and we are saved to enjoy it.
You are called to the cross for salvation• Keeping~ The meaning of salvation
also includes that of keeping alive. • God’s salvation keeps you going.• He gives you the Holy Spirit at
rebirth to empower your new life.
You are called to the cross for salvation• Benefiting~ Keeping in good health,
or benefiting, or “well-being.”• Spirit, soul and body, God’s
salvation benefits you.• The cross brings reconciliation
spiritually.
You are called to the cross for salvation• The cross brings mental and
emotional health to your soul.• The cross brings physical healing
and eventually a completely renewed eternal being.
You are called to the cross for salvation• Preserving the Inner Being~ A
special nuance is when the terms refer to preserving the inner being or nature.
You are called to the cross for salvation• The salvation of God gives eternal
security. • It is not unconditional eternal
security as some mistakenly believe, because God doesn’t take away your will and force your allegiance.• Rest in His Spirit with confidence in
His power.
The cross is where Jesus took our sin and its punishment in our
place- II Corinthians 5:17-21.
God calls you to the cross for salvation to make the exchange of your sin for His righteousness. From
the place of ultimate death He gives you salvation leading to eternal life.
Part Two: Called to the
Cross for Sanctification
Hebrews 10:10
“By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Sanctification in the New Testament• Sanctification in the New Testament
is from the Greek word ἁγιασμός (hagiasmos).• The word literally means holiness –
God makes you “Holy” through what Jesus did on the cross.• We are in a state of holiness but we
are also called to personally advance in holiness.
Sanctification in the New Testament• God sees you through what Jesus did
on the cross making you “holy” in His eyes.• God also expects you to grow in
holiness in your daily living.
Sanctification in the Old Testament• Sanctification in the Old Testament-
The Hebrew word qadosh;( שודק)• The meaning is “to be set apart”. In
a generic sense sanctification sets something apart for its intended use by its designer.• Living according to God’s purpose
for your life.
Sanctify Yourself• Sanctify yourselves (Joshua 3:5, II
Corinthians 6:14-7:1)• Be like Christ, not like the world.• Rid yourself of known sin.• Separate yourself from sinful
lifestyles.• Come to the cross to be sanctified
and offer yourself fully to God.
