Nineteen students named to band, choir By KAITLYN GILLESPIE Nineteen Oberlin students have been named to either the Kansas Music Educator’s Association dis- trict honor band, choir, or jazz band. The students were selected on Nov. 3 in Hays. Selected for the honor band were Alyssa Rippe, Chris Larson, Che- naniah Langness, Becky Helm, Jacob Helm, Amber Mason and Tim Larson. Becky is a four-year member of the honor band. To be selected for the honor band, students sent in audition tapes. The district honor choir includes Kassia Bryan, Jacinta Carter, Rhian- non Davies, Joe Hirsch, Kenzie Fisher, Ashley Horton, Daniel Jordan, An- namarie Larue, Ethan Merrill, Jordan Tally and Rory Wendelin. Kenzie has also been selected all four years of high school to the district honor choir. Honor choir members auditioned live in front of three judges. They had to sing parts of three songs. We appreciate your patience. There has been a delay in the production of the 2007 edition due to two pages being misplaced. The plant has found the pages and is working diligently to finish up our yearbook. “No one is more frustrated than the students and me who worked very hard on the book, but it will be worth the wait,” said yearbook advi- sor Brenda Breth. “We will let you know as soon as they arrive.” Pumpkins come to fiery end in class By ANDREW DEMPEWOLF The college prep Chemistry II class ended Halloween with a BOOM! On Halloween the students and their teacher, Mark Bricker, headed out to the courtyard for some Halloween fun — chemistry style. The students had previously brought pumpkins from Jamie Mill- er’s great pumpkin patch, carved them to their liking and gutted them, so they wouldn’t make too much of a mess. The students brought the pump- kins into the courtyard and stood back. Mr. Bricker, with his “Helmet of Science,” began prepping the pumpkins for explosion. He added a chemical to the decorated fruit that reacted with the enzyme in each pumpkin to make acetylene. He set a spark to the mixture and the courtyard erupted with sound. Students in the class are Andrew Dempewolf, Melissa Hasty, Re- becca Helm, Jamie Miller, Gage Reichert, and Kayla Zodrow. Mr. Bricker said, “What better way to celebrate Halloween than to blow up a pumpkin! It was fun and educational.” Rebecca Helm said, “The pump- kin exploding was very fun.” 8B Dictator 46.indd 1 11/12/07 4:53:49 PM
