, What an amazing day!

I must have been crazy scheduling four events, in-cluding three open houses and ribbon cuttings, into one day. A daunting task on any day, especially a beautiful Saturday. This should come to no one’s surprise….Our great community spirit came alive and made all a huge success!

The day started with the First Saturday Flea Market at Mary Laveroni Park. We had a great selection of vendors and the shoppers were non-stop until late in the day. Let’s thank Ron & Peggie Sharp for all their time and effort. Next month’s will be even bigger. The Yosemite Hwy 120 Chamber of Commerce will have a table at the June event. If you would like to donate any saleable items, please call 962-0429.

Next stop was to Mountain Sage Coffee Shop. New owners Jess & Chelsea Garcia, along with 3yr old Melila and 1 month old Ban-yan, welcomed everyone for an open house and ribbon cutting. They had free refreshments and samples of their baked goods, including gluten free blueberry muffins and fresh organic quiche prepared by Chef Doug from the Hotel Charlotte with ingredients from Hopping Rab-bit Farm. They wish to thank the community, family and friends for such great support. Mountain Sage is located at 18653 Main St and open 7 days a week.

ters, and emails.

The third stop of the day was Kevin & Randi’s Old Fashioned Meat Market. Owners Kevin Reynolds & Randi Jones opened in April and be-came an overnight success. They decided to have a BBQ during the open house, featuring grass feed beef sliders and tri-tip sandwiches. Randi’s mom and bother, Patricia Dinwiddie and Robert Forbes, came from Grass Valley to help with the event. Kevin’s mom, Joanne McKinney was there to support her son. Thanks to Samuel Estrada, the DJ, and Linell Marshall, the beauti-ful cake. A special thanks to employees Alicia & Amanda for all the hard work they have put in. Located at 18687 Main St. open Mon-Sat 7-5.

The final event of the day was actually four busi-nesses celebrating with a BBQ, Raffle and Rib-bon Cutting. Hundreds of people came out to support Bella Donna Full Service Salon, Down to Earth Nursery, Down to Earth Con-struction and Hessler Construction. Owners Andria Albanez, Ray Albanez & Ron Hessler want to thank everyone for making this day such an incredible success . Bella Donna is open by appointment at 962-6602. Down to Earth Nursery is open 7 days a week from 8-5(Saturday 8-4 and Sunday 10-2). They are located at 13050 Boitano Rd Groveland.

Donation Opportunities – 2014 49’er Festival, Chili & Salsa Cook-Off The Yosemite Hwy120 Chamber of Commerce needs your help and support with the Groveland community’s biggest event of the year: the 49’er Festival & Chili Cook-Off. The event, scheduled for September 20, 2014, in Mary Laveroni Community Park, will begin with a pancake breakfast at 7am, followed by a fly-over at 8:30 and a Parade down Main Street at 9:00. Vendor booths for crafts, merchandise and food, as well as activities for all ages, will be set up in the park, plus the booths for the Chili & Salsa Cook-Off. The raffle, silent auction and live auction are always very popular events, and our live entertainment will be an additional draw. We are in need of event sponsors, as well as prize donations for the raffle and auction events. Would your business consider being a sponsor, or donating a prize for the raffle or auctions? A sponsorship of $100 or more would be most welcome. A donation of monetary, gift certificate, prod-uct or service, would be greatly appreciated. Sponsors receive advertising on a variety of flyers, bro-chures, advertisements, press releases, and by other means. All donations will be seen by thou-sands of people, and we try to list all donations on our website too, so this is a really great way to promote your business. Please indicate on the attached form your donation and return it with your donation (if appropriate) to the Yosemite Hwy120 Chamber of Commerce, P.O. box 1263, Groveland, CA 95321. If it’s a product or service, we will contact you to make arrangements to pick up your gift or to discuss details. Business Name:

First I would like to apologize for not providing an article last month. I have no good excuse other than I just hit a wall when trying to finalize the draft. The problem that I always have is in deciding on the subject to cover. This is where the readers can be of help. Two items that I would like to begin with are both subjects suggested by readers. The first subject is broadband availability. Recently I attended a Broadband Summit at the Black Oak Hotel. There were many speakers there that talked on the subject and went over what is avail-able in our region. Not to anyone’s surprise was the fact that there simply is not enough coverage. Darrell Slocum, Marketing Director for the Central Sierra Connect, a grant funded organization work-ing through ATCA, is working to help improve broadband in our region. I asked him to provide me with some information that I could pass along to you in order to get us all more involved to help im-prove broadband availability in our region. Darrell stated that one way everyone can aid in this effort is to visit the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Broadband map to see what kind of coverage the State “says” you already have. The map may or may not be correct! Check it out by first running a speed test. Go to www.speedtest.net and follow the instructions. Do this for your residence and again for your busi-ness. Once you have your results available, please visit www.groadbandmap.ca.gov and click on the “interactive map” application. There, you can fill in the form with your address and move along the process. Please note that this map is riddled with errors. Why? It is primarily due to the larger internet providers overstating their coverage. Yes, these errors are detrimental to our region. The mechanism for correcting these errors is literally in your hands? It is essential that you communi-cate any broadband mapping errors via the CPUC mapping program. If a provider is shown for your home or business and they do not offer service, it is very important to click on the “send feedback” button and share the correct information. Do this as soon as possible. Encourage friends, neighbors, business associates and everyone you know to do the same. The importance of this ac-tion cannot be overstated. And best of all, this is something we can do that will positively impact our area. It’s within our control! By the way, running the speed test is fun. However, it can be deflating to learn how poorly your own internet access performs compared to the norm. The CPUC’s definition of broadband or “high speed” internet is 6 megabits per second (mbps) for download and 1.5 mbps for upload. Now, go see how you compare and become a part of the solution! If you have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact Darrell Slocum at [email protected] or (209) 770-5777. He is the expert. The second subject I was asked to address is to explain what type of emergency notification system Tuolumne County has? The short answer is a brand new system that is, in my opinion, one of the very best. It should be on line by June 1, 2014. It’s called “Everbridge System”. It was chosen for mass emergency notifica-tion because of its detailed interactive features. It would take an entire page to fully describe every-thing this system will do. To learn about this system, please go to http://everbridge.com. This web-site will provide you with all the information you need. I think you will be impressed. Once

Page 15

launched, the system can be accessed on the Tuolumne County website page at www.tuolumnecounty.ca.gov. This next topic is one that affects our county on a personal and economic level. You have probably read in other papers recently that the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has denied the request to hold the annual Strawberry Music Festival at Camp Mather cit-ing water supply and safety concerns. The Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors sent a letter to SFPUC requesting they reconsider. The answer was a polite, “No”. Everyone that has businesses along the 120 corridor understands what a benefit this event has always been to the economy and to Tuolumne County as a whole. The United States Forest Service also cited safety concerns originally when receiving the permit re-quest. To their credit, they have in fact reopened the campgrounds on the Highway 120 corridor and Evergreen Road. They looked at the opening as a priority for economic reasons as well as a benefit to the residents of the region. So, now that we seemed to have addressed the safety concerns that the SFPUC voiced in their de-nial, the other challenge was not having enough water available for domestic use for a crowd of over 7000 festival attendees. I know a little about the water supply at Camp Mather. I was going over some old family photographs and there was a picture of my father standing next to the water tank at Mather. He was leaning on his 1928 Chevy Convertible. I believe the year was 1930. Why I mention this is that it reminded me of how far we have come with technology. Not just the car but the red-wood tank with its metal strapping. The City and County of San Francisco, the SFPUC and the Hetch Hetchy systems have access to some of the best engineering minds and advanced technology in the world. Instead of a “NO”, maybe they could challenge their teams to find a solution to the water issue. It’s not much to ask a City and County that has garnered $$ Billions of Dollars$$ in revenue from the sale of water from the Tuolumne River. In the big scheme of things, the Strawberry Music Festival is obviously not im-portant to the City and County of San Francisco but it sure is to many people in our County. Just my opinion! ** As I began writing on this topic I was informed that the organizers of this event have entered into an agreement with Nevada County to hold the Strawberry Music Festival for 2014 at the Nevada County Fair Grounds from Sept.11th through Sept 16th.** The Board of Supervisors fear that once this event is lost, it may be gone forever! The impact of its potential loss would be greatly felt by the county and the Highway 120 businesses. As always, I look forward to your comments and suggestions, and please take time to look at the new Tuolumne County website at www.tuolumne.ca.gov.
