Better lifestyles for Europeans thanks to aCircular CultureCircularity is a key target for EU policy makers, theindustry and many citizens for a reason. Who could oppose the basics that valuableproducts, materials and resources have to bemaintained in the economy for as long as possible, that the generation of waste needs to beminimised, and that long lasting products, sharing, digitisation, as well as resource recovery must becreated? The “Circular Economy Action plan”, themindset of home appliance manufacturers andother sectors to improve circularity from theoutset and the notion of Europeans that a throw-away society is hurting the environment are thesolid shoulders on which you would be able to stepon. Today, 90% of the materials coming from theofficially collected appliances, when they havereached their end of life, are recovered andready to enter again into the manufacturing circlesnot only of the home appliance industry, but alsofor use in other products and loops. The officiallycollected large appliances, such as fridges, washingmachines and air conditioners are recycled to avery high degree and industry-driven recyclingschemes succeed in recycling substantial amounts. To further improve circularity all waste needs to behandled by the correct recycling operations.Achieving this would mean that all waste needs tobe effectively tracked and reported. In reality, however, two-thirds of preciousresources remains undocumented and is notcoming back into material loops as secondaryraw material, making it unclear how this wasteis collected and thereafter treated. To close this gap, we must ensure proper collectionand waste treatment, municipalities need to set upcollection points where citizens as you and us canbring their old appliances. The separation of wastein wood-plastic-paper-electronic waste, requiresactive citizen participation combined withintervention by authorities. The treatment ofelectronic waste requires the direct involvement ofproducers. The guarantee that everything worksregularly, in compliance with communityenvironmental rules, requires supervision bymarket surveillance authorities.

Bringing smallappliances

to a collection pointensures materials can be recycled

Almost every week, we see fryers, grills, coffeemachines, toasters and other small appliancesbeing left on the street or ending up in thehousehold bin. In numbers, 17% or almost one-fifth of the small appliances are disposed withunsorted municipal waste and do not reachthe established recycling process forelectronic waste where materials can be recycled. The choices we make in life are based on ourknowledge and emotions. Europeans want to know they could use 10 timesless water by using a dishwasher instead of doingthe dishes by hand, freeing up а lot of time, and tobe able to choose the more rational and sustainableway of doing the daily chores. Besides keepingpeople's food cool, fridges also prevent the waste oftonnes of food, saving a significant bit of people’smonthly budget. Europeans want to know that by bringing theirsmall appliances to an authorised collection pointfor electronic waste, they do a favour to theenvironment and to themselves. Europeans want to know that connected, smartappliances can facilitate reparability andmaintenance, thanks to remote diagnostics, maintenance advice and failure detection and thatas a result, they can keep their existing applianceslonger instead of buying a newer model. Being informed that every single action counts andis interlinked is the first crucial step that has to bemade. Engaging citizens in a cause is the second. Europeans deserve to be provided with the rightincentives to join the Circular Culture family.

Better lifestyles for Europeans thanks to aSmart Energy Market and Connected HomesToday, almost 80% of Europeans find the idea ofliving in a smart home appealing. Who could oppose a technology that allows asmarter management of the electricity we use, inreal time and plenty of comfort? The potentialfinancial savings generated through the use ofsmart appliances, such as space heating andcooling appliances, can be significant, not justfor the user but also for the environment andthe electricity system. The “Clean Energy for AllEuropeans” package, the legislation on dataprotection and cybersecurity, the home applianceindustry’s innovative solutions and the readiness ofcitizens to embrace cutting-edge technologies arean encouraging starting point. Today, an air conditioner can automaticallyadjust when it receives a signal from the gridthat energy cost is at its lowest level. Energyconsumption can be optimised when renewableenergy becomes available, thereby increasing thepenetration of renewable energy sources, loweringCO2 emissions and bringing us closer to the targetof the Paris Agreement. A heater can get a signalfrom the electric grid that there is a peak indemand. In response, the appliance can delay itscycle slightly, to adapt to the needs of the grid. This can be arranged so the user does not notice achange in the home temperature. The potential to reap all benefits could becomereal if European national governments supportthe development of responsive energy use andnew time-varying electricity pricing models, such asoffering considerably lower tariffs at low peak tothe citizens who are prepared to use flexible smartappliances. Besides savings in resources and energyconsumption, citizens in 21st century also feelthe need of creating more comfort at home, having more time to spend with their loved onesand doing their favourite hobbies.

Smart appliances

can lower bills byusing energy whenit is cheapest

Appliancesbring comfort & smartfunctions save ahousehold up to100 hours a year

By being able to connect to the Internet to retrieverelevant information, connected appliancescould save a typical household up to 100hours a year, the equivalent of more than fourcomplete days and nights, or two-and-a-half 40-hour work weeks. Fridges and ovens could trackexpiration dates of food, automatically adjustcooling levels to the type of food that is stored, create shopping lists, order groceries and show theinside of the refrigerator or oven via a mobiledevice, to check the content or track the progressof the meal being prepared. As the forecasts show that connected deviceswill be in nearly every home by 2020,reaching around 50 billion globally, dataownership and protection, as well as cybersecurityis a crucial issue for home appliance manufacturersin Europe. The choices we make in life are based on ourbeliefs and the capability to be in control. Europeans want to know that their security is amain priority for the industry. Europeans want to know that smart homes are notscience fiction and that future-oriented reforms ofthe energy system could lower their energy bills, making appliances use energy when it is cheapestand best from an environmental perspective. Europeans want to know that the existing smarttechnology would bring them and their families toanother level of comfort, saving them a lot of time.

Better lifestyles for Europeans thanks to high-quality job opportunities

European home appliance manufacturers employnearly 1 million people and offer to the world top-quality products. Who could oppose a legislation that supportscreativity, quality jobs for Europeans and acompetitive industry? Smart regulations, such asthe New Legislative Framework have set a framefor the industry. The home appliance industry’syearly investment of EUR 1.4 billion in R&D,and the citizens’ willingness to be part of Europe’smanufacturing force, are a powerful start to thenew EU constellation. For a long time, home appliance manufacturers’innovative solutions and significant resources haveensured that the industry is first-in-class indelivering energy efficiency improvements, contributing almost to half of the EU’s 20%energy efficiency target for 2020. In light ofEU’s 2030 energy and climate policy, producers re-confirm their support to the EU’s objectives. Today, the sector also creates jobs linked torepair activities, directly and indirectly, andcounts for almost 3 500 home appliance enterprisesacross the continent. Every year, more and morepatents are deposited, to protect the results offruitful R&D activities. Back in 2017, the homeappliance sector filed 11 000 patent applicationswith the European Patent Office. The potential to bring the numbers up, thanks tothe rapidly growing digitalisation and modernisationof the products, can be real if multiple layers ofrules and administrative burden are avoided.Investment decisions are always made with thelegal obligations in mind. The home applianceindustry has its “yes” ready to legislation thatis based on facts and that brings real value toEuropeans.
