NOTESMusic is considered the most abstract of all art forms. It is colorless and odorless.

We do not watch it. We cannot hold it in our hands or take a picture of it. Yet this

invisible art can elicit emotion, evoke mood, and make us feel nostalgic. It can make

us want to jump up and dance, shout, laugh, and it can move us to tears. In America,

Jazz wore the crown for half of the 20th century. Jazz musicians captured not only our

attention but also our imagination. Side Man reminds us that there was a time when

instrumentalists, not vocalists, were pop stars. Rhythm, not rhyme held our interest;

a time when men and women gathered around their radios, in juke joints, and in

nightclubs to jive. To be transported. To just listen.

SPECIAL THANKSFirst of all, we would like to thank Dan Kirsh, Bret Young and Travis Guss of

Diversionary Theatre for the guidance and help in mounting this production of

SIDE MAN. Without them, this production wouldn't have happened.

Warren leight (Playwright) Leight was born on January 15, 1957,

in New York City. When he was sixteen, he began attending Stanford

University, where he studied journalism. In interviews, Leight hasnoted that SIDE MAN touches on issues that were relevant to his

own childhood. So much so, in fact, that the author notes that it

was a difficult play for him to write. However, Leight is quick to note

that many of the specific situations in the play were invented for

dramatic purposes and that the play is not totally autobiographical.

SIDE MAN won multiple awards including the 1999 Tony Award

for Best Play, and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Glimmer, Glimmer

and Shine, received an American Theatre Critics Association Nomination for Best New

Play Award. Other theatre includes Mayor, the Musical (Drama Desk nomination, Book)

and The Final Investigation of Ceaucescu's Dog; (EST Marathon; Chicago Humanities

Diversionary Theatre is recognized as one of San Diego's best theaters. Though its

history has been long and varied, it is one of the most vibrant showcases of theatrical

talent in the city.

Over the last four years the theater has elevated its productions and extended its season.

The response has been remarkable, as its productions regularly receive "Critic's Choice",

Sigal Govrin (Artist) Sigal was born inIsrael in a small kibbutz near Haifa. She

moved to Northern California with her

family when she was eleven and started

focusing on her interest in art, exploringmore mediums, and discovering her deep

love for painting.

In 2001 she attended San Diego State

University and spent her junior year

studying abroad at SAC I (Studio Arts

Center International) in Florence, Italy.

While in Florence, she was strongly

influenced by the great masters and their

figurative paintings and derived greatinspiration from living in one of the art capitals of the world.

Sigal graduated with a BA in Painting and is pursuing a career in art

with a concentration in portraiture. She loves to capture her subject's

emotions and likeness on canvas and thinks that the best part is

bringing joy to those receiving the gift:

"I think the best feeling in the world is the exchange of the final

painting, when I see the emotions on that person's face and they

tell me that I captured the essence of their personality in my work. I

couldn't ask for a better compliment!"

Sigal thanks her family for her unique upbringing and the perspective

of growing up in a kibbutz and a country with such diverse cultures.

She continues to pursue her other passion - travel - which helps her

derive new inspiration for her paintings and her growth as a well

rounded artist. She currently paints out of her studio in San Diego and

does commission work in oils and acrylics. She is often recognized for

her unique work for special events such as weddings, Bar-Mitzvahs,

birthdays, anniversaries and fundraisers.
