Ballad
2 Stanzas from a poem with many stanzas!
They had not sailed a league, a league,A league but barely three,When the lift grew dark, and the wind blew loud,And gurly grew the sea.
O long, long may the ladies sit,With their fans into their handsBefore they see Sir Patrick SpensComing sailing to the strand!
Ballads are an earlier form of poetry that tell a story. They are a form of Narrative writing. They are usually written in quatrains with many stanzas.
Modern Example:
My father's gone to New York stateFor business he must do.I wish that he were here with me,To help paint my bedroom blue.
When he gets back, he promised me,A baseball game to see.If I but finish all my work,We'll see a game or three!

Lyric Poetry
Example from Emily Dickonson’s Dying
I heard a fly buzz when I died; The stillness round my formWas like the stillness in the airBetween the heaves of storm.
A lyric poem expresses a person’s feelings. It may or may not be set to music or rhyme. Sometimes it may only have a part that is presented with music..

Narrative
The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth;
It tells a story. It is told by a narrator and has story elements like character, setting. problem, and solution.

Humorous
The LoserBy Shel Silverstein
Mama said I'd lose my headIf it wasn't fastened on.Today I guess it wasn't
‘ cause while playing with my cousinIt fell off and rolled awayand now it's gone.
And I can't look for it‘ cause my eyes are in it,and I can't call to it
‘ cause my mouth is on it( couldn't hear me anyway‘ cause my ears are on it),can't even think about it
‘ cause my brain is in it.So I guess I'll sit downon this rockand rest for just a minute...
A humorous poem is humorous! It can make you laugh, or has witty or silly, nonsensical humor in it.
