Here we are in November and we are delighted to be able to host the BYA Awards once again.

Now in it’s 3rd year, the awards have established themselves firmly in the UK’s calendar of events and are now recognised as a leading ceremony of recognition for young people around the country. Congratulations on being part of 2011’s momentous occasion.

This evening we will be celebrating the stories of success of some of our young people, along with a few not-so-young in our 3 new categories for this year (see pages 11 and 12).

It is important that we acknowledge the positive actions that are taking place in our communities each and every day. A couple of months ago we witnessed violence and damage throughout the country and here in Croydon. With shops looted, homes burnt to the ground and a general feeling of destruction surrounding us, it would be easy to assume that all youth are of the same nature. We absolutely know that this is not the case and for that reason BYA are proud to continue to raise the profile of young achievers throughout the UK.

We would like to wish you an enjoyable evening as you surround yourself with inspirational and aspiring individuals.

Remember “There is a success story within everyone” – have you unlocked yours yet?

Below are a few of their answers.

Full versions of some of the responses will be

published on the Black Youth Achievements

website for you to enjoy, but until then

please be inspired…

Achievement to me means a positive outcome for something you have personally completed successfully. When this goal is reached, it makes you feel that your efforts have not been in vain and everything you had set your sights on have been fulfilled.

The advice I would give to any person chasing a goal or dream, regardless of their disposition, is that our dreams distinguish us from our peers and keep the fire in our hearts alive.

I am pleased to be a role model for other young women and I hope to be an inspiration and show them that anything is possible if you want it.

Achieving something is dependent not only on my intentions but how I follow through on them, even when it seems unachievable.

presented by Darae Palmer & 2010 Winner Naomi Francis

Darae PalmerBorn and raised in London, Darae’s life to date has been to many like a dream unfolding. With his first love music he learnt his trade in his early teenage years singing gospel in his Pentecostal church. Darae’s talent for performing was widely received and brought great recognition within the gospel circuit which in turn caught the attention of many celebrated artists outside of gospel, who sought after the services of Darae for session singing and songwriting. In this area he worked with various acts like George Michael, Elton John, Soul 2 Soul and Mark Morrison to name a few.

One defining moment in Darae’s career was when he was asked by the award-winning jazz artist Ronny Jordan to be a special guest vocalist on his world tour. This tour covered Australia, New Zealand, St.Lucia, Japan, Europe and all across America, and gave him another level of confidence as he was continuously receiving rave reviews around the world for his performances.

Darae’s presence and charisma while performing also caught the attention of MTV’s management/marketing department who had recently penned an idea for a new TV programme and were looking for the right man to front the show.

Darae is now becoming as famous and highly regarded for his presenting, interviewing and hosting skills as he has for singing. This is due to the vastly successful Baselounge, MTV Base’s brilliant R&B/Hip Hop showcase event and television show. Darae is not only the presenter and host but is also the musical director of the Baselounge house band.

Some of the past guests/performers of the show who have been interviewed by Darae include Floetry, Blu Cantrell, Charlotte Church, Shaggy, Jamelia, Joss Stone, Lemar, Roy Ayers, Mica Paris and Teedra Moses.

This has opened up more avenues to Darae’s many hidden talents which in result has led to voiceovers for commercials, narrating reality TV shows and presenting on radio.

presented by Swiss & 2010 Winners Amy Tandoh and Paris Thomas-Robinson

presented by Claudine Reid MBE & Pat Reid (PJ’s Community Service) with 2010 Winner Ebony Torrington

SwissSwiss is a veteran of the UK’s Urban music scene. With experience far beyond his years Swiss has been able to sample the highs and lows of the music industry and is back hard at work to recapture and exceed the past glories he achieved with his band So Solid. Swiss has proven himself as deejay, producer and rapper. He has now embraced new aspects of his creativity, by reinventing himself as an advocate of healthy eating, motivational speaker and author of the ‘Spot the Difference’ key to unlocking hidden potential, aimed towards young people. Hailing from a council estate in Battersea he managed to escape the common pitfalls that many young people fall victim to. Swiss explains “writing was something that came so natural to me. In primary school I used to write short stories incorporating metaphorical language, I guess that developed into me writing songs, then further on I’ve matured and used those skills to develop my book...”

Swiss got his first big break as a Deejay on South London garage pirate station Delight FM. In fact Swiss was the first ever DJ to spin on the station, and through his work on Delight he earned himself a place in the So Solid crew. In his words “I got inspired being around the So Solid MCs. I started writing more and making beats in the studio.” His time in the studio paid off and he quickly scored a top ten hit called ‘Broken Silence’. The track gave vent to the more reflective, conscious elements of his character, which he would later put to even greater effect on his smash underground hit single ‘Cry’. Having travelled the world and taken time out to educate himself, Swiss has now emerged as a well rounded artist and intellectual ready to give back not only to his community but the world with new music material, motivational talks throughout universities, online lectures and being the co-founder and co-ordinator of N.E.E.T. (Not in education, Employment, and Training) project Rapargram. “My life thus far has been a wonderful journey that I want to share with others in order to assist in raising young people to reach their full potential.”
