BYOD COMPUTING

–Joseph Sweeney, IBRS

"Much has been written about strategies for ICT in education around

substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition for how

lessons run in the classroom.

BYOD really forces these issues to the fore, because if you cannot

standardise the learning environment, you have to move

beyond simple textbook substitution."

TRANSITION TO BYOD

1. Take a qualitative baseline first - notes, engagement, behaviour, opinions

2. Involve the students and parents as much as you can

3. Focus the improvement plan on quality, not achievement

4. Give staff time to research, discuss and transform

Improve the quality of S3 student note taking in National 4/5 Computing Science.

Baseline: note jotters used but rarely revisited by some; handouts disorganised in folder; folder of notes occasionally lost, often forgotten; notes mostly replica of whiteboard
