Anzac Day AssemblyOn Tuesday the 2nd of May, Byron Bay High School commemorated Anzac Day with a whole school assembly. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the final year of World War I, and we again focused on some of the key people and events of that conflict.

In remembering the local contribution to World War I, students listened to Daniel Peacock and Mya Atkins-Healey (both Modern History students from Year 12) recount the war experience of the Armfield brothers, William and Theodore, two young men from Bangalow who went off to fight, and to ultimately die, on the Western Front in France. We also heard about the achievements of Australia’s most brilliant military leader of World War I, Sir John Monash, described ably by our school captains Domenica Wenban and Xander Mains. Finally, our guest speaker for the day, Mr Ross Sillar from the Byron Bay Branch of the RSL, spoke about the armistice that ended World War I and how this marked the beginning of the long struggle for many returning soldiers, and their families, attempting to reclaim some kind of normal life after the war.

Many people contributed to making our Anzac Day assembly a memorable one. Our school vice-captains Shea Mulligan and Ethan Archer ran the assembly, with Shea even stepping in at the last minute to sing the national anthem- an amazing effort! Belle McGregor from Year 7 sang a haunting version of the Cranberries “Zombie”, accompanied by Mr Todd from CAPA on the guitar. Belle impressed us all with her beautiful voice and her confident stage presence. Georgia Willey read the Ode of Remembrance, with Brian Pamphilon again generously joining us to play the Last Post and Rouse. CAPA once again provided the musical backing and sound for the day, and as always our G.A. Mr Steve Slee did a great job of setting up the hall for us. Finally, a big thank you to all of the students and staff present in the hall on the day for the respectful way in which they observed this important occasion.

Drama News

by Angela Betzien

Year 11 Drama students and Ms Museth are working tirelessly during rehearsals for the powerful production of ‘War Crimes’ that they will present over three nights in Week 9 this term. This project demands much time, energy and commitment from the students, who attend rehearsals after school and on Saturdays throughout the term. The cast and crew are facing the challenges of staging a full scale, mature and confronting production with focus and creativity, taking on various roles including acting, directing, stage management, promotional design, photography, stage crew, set design, sound operation and lighting/follow spot design and operation, as part of their Year 11 Drama coursework.

Year 11 Drama student Marie Rosenberger, our promotional designer and photographer, with the help of Ms Ash Schumann, has taken some stunning promotional photographs, as seen below. The outdoor shots are part of a series to be used in our promotional poster, flyer and program package which you will see around the Byron Shire from next week. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for concession and $25 per family of four. The play is approved for senior study in NSW secondary schools, yet we wish to advise potential audience members that the themes of racism, sexual assault and teenage drinking, along with sexual references and coarse language, make it unsuitable for more sensitive or younger viewers. Mature audience is recommended. Please call Ms Museth at the school for more information or to ask questions. The play presents important messages about youth culture, gender and oppression that the cast and crew feel strongly about tackling.

Music NewsSeven SessionsMusic performances at lunch have re-started this term, with a make-over and change of day. Now happening on Day 7 and renamed ‘Seven’, Year 11 VET Entertainment Students have taken over the planning and production of the event. Year 12’s have done a great job and are now focusing on completing their courses and preparing for their HSC. Good weather has seen the session return to the glorious outdoor setting outside the CAPAL block, where sunshine and smiles prevailed with a great audience turn out of loyal friends, music lovers and a community mix of students and staff.

The first session featured a stunning debut appearance by an incredibly well rehearsed Year 7 and 8 band ‘Blue Solution’ (Toby, Yazew, Josh, Kai and Leo), who found their name on a science whiteboard!

Following that was an entrancing performance of ‘Bruises’ by Anoushka and Kaia from Year 11 music class; displaying improvised harmonies and beautiful vocal quality. Both also a debut appearance at the school.

Next up was the ‘mystery staff spot’, featuring the ‘The Bald Brothers’; the large and powerful voice of Mr Matcham Caine belting out some good ole deep south blues accompanying himself with his trusty axe plus Mr Reade blasting some Blues harp, Mr Baker on bass and a recent talent discovery on drums from the cleaning staff; Eshed.

A mesmerising performance from a Year 11 five piece band (led by Mana on vocals, supported by Mali, Oscar and Oscar), rounded off the show perfectly.

Look out for the next Day 7 and come to watch our Seven Session! If you would like to perform, please see your music teachers to book in.

Keep playing the music, and let the music play!

Mr Daniel Reade, Music Teacher

Italy Exchange Program 2018On April 7 2018, Byron High School teachers Mr Swinson and Miss Burchall, along with 16 students, joined their Mullumbimby High School friends (15 students, Mrs Elliott and Mr Clarke) at Brisbane airport. We were ready to commence our long journey to Padua Italy, with only a short stop at Dubai airport. Once in Padua the students stayed for two weeks with their Italian host families and experienced many incredible excursions, Italian school lessons, and both school and family adventures. Learning about Italian culture, language, cuisine, and integrating into the diverse lifestyles of their host families. At the end of our stay, at Padua train station, there were teary farewells with our new Italian friends/families. Then we ventured off to Rome. In Rome our groups blended beautifully like an extended family for three days and four nights of spectacular sightseeing, history and all that Roman city life entails.

This incredible exchange program offered by Byron Bay High School is successful due to the consistent dedication and commitment of staff (Italian and Australian teachers), students, and families who take on the exchange each year. The Australian students who attend always return with memories that will last a lifetime and many stories to tell. We look forward to our Italian friends visiting us and staying later this year, and to sharing the many treasures we possess in our Byron Shire. Please enjoy some reflections from our Byron Bay High School students below:

“The Italy trip was a trip of a lifetime”.

“We were able to experience and learn about Italian culture through the eyes of a local”.

“We indulged in breath taking sights with the company of not only my best friends but the company of our Italian host”.

“My Italian family welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home. I want to thank them for giving me an experience of a lifetime”.

“The Paccagnella family were so nice and welcoming. They made my stay there more enjoyable and it was interesting seeing how an Italian family lives”.

“I will never forget this experience, thanks to my Italian family the Nardolillo’s continual generosity and kindness, showering me with love, and making me feel so at home in a foreign country”.

New worldsOur weary eyes opened on that day, the Prato della Valle lay before us. Its beauty drew us in, a magnet to our wandering feet.

A stream of wonder never ceasing to flow. Crumbling ruins, towering cathedrals, snow-capped peaks. A sea of striking colour, a culture vibrant and foreign. A landscape rich in history, a lively tradition.

People brimmed with kindness, Families with outstretched arms and loving hearts Nourished our stomachs and minds. We collected these moments, shells on a beach intricate and beautiful.

Your hospitality, Boundless. Our gratitude, limitless. New friendships, treasured.

The rivers, beaches and forests of our home await you.

Introducing the new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Empowerment Team The Byron Bay High School Plan is a document that is collaboratively created by our school community in order to guide our development. It is an aspirational document that contains the hopes, expectations and processes that will enable this educational institution to reflect our core community values; inclusivity, care, creativity and innovation in addition to delivering an academic and experiential education that prepares young people for the future.

One of the strategic directions that will ensure better outcomes for all students is in the empowerment and promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, perspectives and ways of learning (pedagogy).

In order to make community aspirations a reality, Byron Bay High School has recently formed the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Empowerment Team. This team will implement a number of strategies to reach the outcomes and milestones in accordance with the Aboriginal Education Policy, the School Plan and the community oriented goals set by our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and parents. One of the methods currently being developed is the production of a ‘Personalised Learning Pathway’ (PLP’s) for each Indigenous student. This process allows students and parents to voice their aspirations, interests and concerns, creating a partnership in the pursuit of excellence.

Regular articles will appear in the newsletter to keep you up to date with our progress.

Open Girls SoccerEdwards and Salmon score late goals to win the OPEN girls Soccer side through to Zone finalByron Bay High School’s Open girls soccer side is through to the Zone final against Rivers High School after a thrilling win against Wollumbin High School on Thursday 15 May.

After recent strong performances against Kingscliff High School (7-0) and Ballina Coast High School (2-0), the Girls side travelled to Wollumbin High School. There they took on a team who last year defeated them in a golden goal classic. This time around Byron Bay High School girls were out for revenge and Yazmin Baird-Watson scored a classy opening goal. Much of the game was played on Byron Bay High School’s terms, although two Byron Bay High School mistakes lead to Wollumbin going into half-time with a 2-1 lead.

In the second half Byron Bay High School again owned the ball though couldn’t get it past the wall-like Wollumbin goalkeeper. In a repeat of the second half Wollumbin High School scored another goal this time through a brilliant 25m strike. With ten minutes remaining all seemed lost as we were now down 3-1. With time running out Byron Bay High School went on the attack, and soon after with some brilliant play by Salem Edwards scoring 1 goal from a corner and one excellent strike a minute later. The game was miraculously tied at 3-3 with five minutes remaining. Before the players had time to consider the possibility of repeating last years golden goal outcome, Sarita Burgess made a slicing run down the right wing and crossed a ball to Eva Salmon with a delicate touch Eva struck the ball into the post before following the ball and burying the rebound into the back of the net. Excitement ruptured from the bench and all players.

The girls were now ahead 4-3 and with three minutes remaining. Great leadership and resolve from the side allowed them to hold off Wollumbin and secure the brilliant win on away turf. As a coach it was wonderful to see the way the girls stayed positive throughout the match. Our best players on the day were Yazmin Baird-Watson, Maggie Motley, Grace Eady (GK), Salem Edwards and Sarita Burgess.

We will now play Rivers High School (Lismore/ Kadina/ Richmond River) on the school oval Tuesday 22 May start time to be confirmed possibly 10:00 am. After such a positive match, lets hope the girls can continue this run of form into the Zone final.

The Future Is Ours

It is hoped that the regular repetition of these skills will enable students to participate with confidence in the upcoming Carnival, to aid school spirit as well as enhancing the physical activity patterns of teenagers.

In theory classes, all students in years 7-10 PDHPE should have received and be working on their respective Semester 1 Assessment Tasks. Classes may have modified submission dates, but these are quickly approaching. There are some spare copies still located in the PDHPE staffroom. Alternatively, the following web address has the tasks attached in their respective categories.

https://byronbayhighschoolpdhpe.weebly.com/assessment-tasks.html

Term 2 theory topics are as follows:

Year 7 – continuing ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ for the remainder of the semester

Year 8 – finishing ‘Drug Use’ and then moving on to ‘Puberty’

Year 9 – finishing ‘Illicit Drug Use’ then moving on to ‘Contraception/Positive Relationships and Diversity’

Year 10 – continuing ‘Road Safety’ for the remainder of the semester

In Stage 5 PASS, the students have been participating in some yoga during their long practical lesson. This links in to the components of fitness of flexibility and muscular endurance.

In Stage 6 PDHPE, Year 11 have just started the topic ‘Better Health for Individuals’, focusing on the dimensions of health and how family and social interactions affect the health of people. A focus will also be on the issues associated with young people and what strategies may be utilised to prevent health issues in the future.

Year 12 are finishing the ‘Factors Affecting Performance’ Core module and are about to commence the Option Sports Medicine. Here, students will look at the classification of injuries and the way these are managed, before focusing on the rehabilitation methods, issues of concern for particular athletes and the policies to prevent issues occurring.

Uniform Reminder

As follow up to last term’s newsletter article, it is required that all students participating in PDHPE practical lessons are to be correctly prepared and changed for each practical lesson. This includes students changing into their teal sport shirt and either navy/black shorts/track pants for each lesson. Students are then required to change back into their full school uniform, as per the school uniform regulations. The exception being on Wednesday, where students may wear the sports uniform the entire day. For those not in the correct uniform, a note is required and an appropriate change of uniform brought – preferably a collared shirt and appropriate footwear and shorts.

Study help, anywhere - Studiosity and A StarHere is a service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students requiring assistance and feedback for school assessment and general work.

There is a signup process but the service is free and run by ‘Studiosity’, student services centre of Sydney University. I’ve signed up and some of the revision activities and quizzes are fun to compete, however, the biggest advantage is the ‘check my draft’ turn-in facility. This allows students to submit a piece of work (such as an essay) and have qualified tutors check it for you, provide feedback on how to improve, and then return it.

Another useful function is the ‘live conversation’ function where you can interact via live messaging with a student-tutor. Check it out! Could be the best thing you’ve done all day.
