Alakazam Parliamentarian At Hand

Barb Kyllo

Using Parliamentary procedure does not have to be stuffy. You can still laugh and enjoy yourself and still have a path to best meeting practices. Remember each of these parliamentary activities is getting your name put into a year end drawing. All you have to do is participate! Want more chances? Backtrack and participate - they are all posted in the newsletters. Send me a quick email about your thoughts of this scenario below. President “Parliamentarian report” Parliamentarian Read the orders of the day President “Secretary” Secretary “The minutes of the last meeting were submitted to your newsletter. Are there corrections

to the minutes? There being none, the minutes stand approved as submitted”. President “Treasurer”

6

Treasurer “Checking balance is $8,500.32. Savings is $56,423.85. I would like to point out that I

received an additional $75.00 from the fundraiser. With all bills allocated we have a profit of $15,250.26. This money is deposited into our savings account”.

General member 1 “Wow that is unbelievable” General member 2 “Way to go non-named fundraiser committee” Treasurer “Are there any questions concerning the treasurer’s report?” President “Membership Vice President”

If you need some fun inspiration the actors I have in mind for this skit are as follows:

President – Julia Roberts

Parliamentarian – Kathy Bates

Secretary – Angelina Jolie

Treasurer – Sandra Bullock

General member 1 – Cameron Diaz

General member 2 – Nicole Kidman

Finding meaning in Labor Day

Does the Labor Day holiday mean more to you than a Monday

off? It should.

It became a federal holiday in 1894 just days after the end of

the famous and bloody Pullman strike. It was first proposed by

union leaders in New York as a celebration of working people

in the union movement.

Yes, the first Monday in September is a time to celebrate how

far we have come in safety, work hours, child labor, basic pay

protections, working conditions, benefits and on-the-job

treatment. Federal and state laws now regulate (perhaps

over-regulate) so many elements of work that entire law firms

focus solely on those rules. Workplace claims make up the

single largest percentage of our federal court system’s civil

case load. Work is very different now than back in 1894.

Festival of Trees – Amy Pumper, Chair Our theme this year is “The Magic of Christmas”. We are looking for magic things – top hats (would need to be small), wands, bunnies, doves, scarves, playing cards (we can glue a few together and decorate with glitter). Some ideas were thrown out at the last meeting of things we can make so we will be getting together to make some. I would like to get together a couple of times in October to start making them – I am looking at October 7th and October 22nd – would like a place with more space than mine to do this. Those with ideas, can you get them to me so that the items needed can be purchased prior to the creating sessions. There could be a change to my schedule due to a possible change in employment – I should know more by the next meeting so bear with me as we go.

March of Dimes Signature Chef’s Auction Thursday, November 8, 2012

By Stephanie Putzier At our July membership meeting it was voted on to help with the March of Dimes Signature Chef’s Auction in the following three capacities:

1) Securing silent and live auction packages in the Byron, Kasson, Mantorville, and Dodge Center areas.

2) Helping with the Fund the Mission where people donate $100 to $1000 or more for the cause either before the auction and that night.

3) Selling raffle tickets. They will most likely sell for $20 a piece, and the prize is still being determined.

The actual event is Thursday, November 8th. They will need some volunteers to help set up the silent auction items on that day, so if some of you are willing to do so please let me know. More detailed information about set-up will be available as the event gets closer. What I need you to do is go around to businesses asking for donations (please let me know

where you plan on going so that I can make sure we do not double up on businesses). They would prefer actual items, but if the company wants to donate a gift card that works too. Something they always need donated for packages is wine and liquor, so make sure to try liquor stores as well. Have them send the donation directly to Amanda Bigus at the March of Dimes, or if they give the donation to you just let me know and I will get it to the appropriate person. Let me know if you have any questions on this. March of Dimes is in the process of getting their raffle tickets printed and ready to go, so as soon as those are ready we can start selling them. Each raffle ticket is $20. Details for the raffle prize are still being worked out. More information on the live auction and Fund the Mission will be coming.
