    In India, less than 50% of the populationhas access to essential drugs- (HumanDevelopment Report 2

    In India, women have been the traditionalhealthcare providers in families. The health of

    children and men folk is their responsibility.And when they fall ill, other women in thefamily or village are likely to look after them.One of the major problems in the area ofprimary health is ensuring that medical

    personnel either reside within the villages thatneed their services or at least make a dailyvisit.

    The Foundation's ModelSchool Program is aholistic Program thatincludes nearly 20different types ofoperational

    interventions, with 9more to be introducedvery soon, that aims totransform the adoptedgovernment schools intoModel Schools, there by

    catering to theaspirations of studentsin the rural setting. Witha view to provide in ruralschools facilities hitherto available only in elite

    As an example a brief on the Drinkingwater initiative is presented. In mostof the adopted villages, due to highlevels of pollution in the water

    source, the Rural water supplyscheme is unable to provide safedrinking water. To mitigate theproblem, the Foundation has set upa Drinking Water Project SWEET(Safe Water for Every one usingEffective Technology). The processconsists of

    coagulation, chlorinedosing, pressure sandfilter, activated carbonfilter, micron filters, UVradiation and Ozonation.The water is supplied in 12liter food grade

    polyethylene cans atRs1.50 per can at theplant (Rs.12.50 paisa perliter). The capital cost ofbuilding and plant isshared between theCommunity (2/3rds) and

    Foundation (1/3rd). ThePanchayat provides landfor the building and theraw water. As on datethere are 61 plantsproviding access to safedrinking water for 1

    million people. The modelhas been replicated in 20other villa es.

    The Foundation wishes to empower women by

    Creating awareness (about their rights, status, duties andgender issues)

    Provide economic opportunities - both employment andself-employment - to women in all the participant villages

    Ensure 'education for all' and increase the educationlevels of women Special healthcare awarenessprogrammes for women

    Formation/ activation of model women SHGs - themembers of which are to act as leaders in spreading thesocial messages to the communities and take part in theoverall transformation of the villages.

    The programme addresses the following primaryproblems: Inadequate extension support to farmers Declining soil fertility due toinappropriate/imbalanced nutrient use Increasing severity of pest and disease pressure Poor water management practices Post harvest losses Declining profits due to increasing productioncosts Unfavourable market linkages Inadequate credit support Non-existent risk management crop insurancesupport.
