BYU Hawaii Curriculum Proposal Number [17-56 v1]

Section 2 – Overview (Support) Proposal Objective: Disentangle the emphases within the ICS major into four interdisciplinary programs that will be distributed over newly structured departments within the College of Arts and Humanities. The International Cultural Studies program was created eighteen years ago to:

1) Speak directly to the international mission of the university; 2) Retain students due the limited number of liberal arts degrees; 3) Facilitate interdisciplinary studies at BYUH with a new and innovative curriculum; 4) Better use and consolidate existing faculty resources across departments; 5) Provide a critical thinking major that stresses a variety of contemporary cultural systems and

theories, and includes a range of historical considerations concerning cultural forms and global social forces.

The ICS program succeeded with all these objectives. Nonetheless, with developments in the university and the college over the years, and with the departure and addition of several faculty members, all these priorities can now be met in other ways and through new intra-college alignments. Factors for Making the Change:

1. Long before the discussion of modularity broadened on this campus, the ICS program was built on a modular model. When the university recently moved to a modular GE curriculum the major became redundant. With these changes an ICS student will essentially be awarded a degree with only modules from both the major program and GE. The interdisciplinary objectives of the major are now duplicated and partially achieved through the broad university GE modular program.

2. With Changes in personnel over the years, both the department and college have shifted so

that the complimentary academic and curricular affinities are no longer restricted to the four emphases of the ICS program. With four independent interdisciplinary programs a greater breadth of connections can be created within the college, and permit distributing students across several programs and their courses. Curriculum across the college can be better used to support multiple programs, reduce faculty preps, and diversify the opportunities for students.

3. With the changes to faculty personnel over the years it now becomes impracticable to

sustain all the ICS core courses. Summary of Program and Credit Changes: This chart illustrates the four current ICS emphases, the disentangling and re-articulation of each program (and renaming in some cases), and where each program will be departmental housed:

ICS Program Emphases Interdisciplinary Programs New Department Homes*

*Clarification about new college department structure provided on the following page. The following points clarify the current and proposed credit changes:

i. At present an ICS student selects a primary emphasis (21 hours) and a secondary emphasis (12 hours) among the major options. The remaining twelve hours (for a total of 45) belong to the ICS core (theory, language, area studies electives, and capstone).

ii. With the proposed modifications each interdisciplinary program will total 39 hours.

iii. The primary focus of the interdisciplinary programs will increase 3-6 hours to 24-27, and

the secondary emphasis will be eliminated and replaced by electives that come from across a greater pool of courses from other departments.

iv. The shared ICS core theory courses will be eliminated as well as the language

requirement. The removal of the language requirement is a response to the elimination of the universal language requirement that was part of the old GE program. Both the existing ICS major and the proposed programs can no longer require the fourth semester of language without hiding credits. Incentives for taking languages are now placed on elective hours or encouraging students to study languages within the college as an additional non-GE minor.

v. Area studies electives will be reorganized and broadened depending on the program,

and the capstone requirement will be integrated into the disciplinary foci. *Pending the proposed curricular reforms, the departments of the College of Arts and Humanities will be restructured. Although this restructuring is beyond the purview of the curricular review, the location of the programs will help clarify the program alignments being forged within the college. Interdisciplinary Cultural Anthropology Major Program Description Anthropology represents a comparative and holistic study of the human condition past and present. The historical (mythological, physical, and archaeological) and ethnographic (socio-cultural and linguistic) methods offer a unique cross-cultural perspective on humankind anciently and today. Our goal is to sharpen critical and analytical thinking about cultural differences and similarities through careful and in-depth studies of particular cultures, and then through a comparative approach, explore underlying cultural processes in the past as well as those within current regional and global trends. We also hope to explore culturally sensitive applications of Anthropological understanding to indigeneity, social inequalities, development and transcultural relations. By studying these processes in a variety of cultural and historical contexts, we will gain not only an appreciation of “others,” but discover an “otherness” in ourselves. This Interdisciplinary Cultural Anthropology Major will provide students with a range of knowledge concerning cultural studies and sociocultural systems. Students will start with the basics focusing on contemporary applications of Cultural Anthropology and then proceed to encounter topics ranging from Hawaiian Cultures to Oceanic Societies to Current Issues in Anthropology and to Applied Anthropology. While gaining this knowledge, students will also obtain a thorough review of historical, social, and cultural theories that have informed anthropological inquiry and practice. Program Outcomes: Students will be able to, upon completing the major requirements,

• Demonstrate working competency in cultural literacy and cultural diversity. • Appreciate cultural differences and develop problem solving skills. • Evaluate culture as a holistic, symbolic, and integrated system. • Think critically. • Cultivate curiosity for life-long learning and leadership. • Understand the application of anthropological knowledge, theories and methods to the

solutions of societal problems.

• Articulate and sustain views through verbal and written discourse. • Be well prepared to enter graduate school or employment.

Section 3 - Program Revision Proposal Upon approval, the information presented on this course proposal sheet will become binding on the department and the university. Any material changes require a new program proposal. Effective Date: Fall 2017 College: Arts and Humanities Abbreviation: HUM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Integrated Humanities Major Program Description:

Human values and beliefs are often reflected through various forms of expression, such as literature, philosophy, and the arts. The study of integrated humanities allows exploration of the various modes/forms of human expression in the Western as well as non-Western cultures. Our goal is to develop critical and analytical thinking about human civilization through a close examination of its cultural histories and expressive art forms, with an increased focus on cultivating the art of seeing, listening, and reading in more purposeful, attentive, informed, and nuanced ways. By studying these cultural products in a world context, we will gain a fuller understanding of the shared human experience coupled with a genuine appreciation for the diverse creative accomplishments of the world’s people.

The study of Integrated Humanities will provide students with a way to productively approach world cultures through their arts, music, literatures, film, folklore, history, theatre, philosophies, and aesthetics. While being introduced to new ideas, students will also have the opportunity to explore and survey critical theories and apply them in analyzing and interpreting creative works from different cultures and time periods.

Program Outcomes Students who complete a degree in Integrated Humanities will:

• Acquire a meaningful degree of cultural literacy they can employ effectively in everyday life • Become astute observers, interpreters and critical thinkers • Integrate a range of critical perspectives on a variety of diverse cultural expressions • Understand and manage cultural differences • Be prepared to enter graduate school and the workplace

Section 3 - Program Revision Proposal Upon approval, the information presented on this course proposal sheet will become binding on the department and the university. Any material changes require a new program proposal. Effective Date: Fall 2017 College: Arts and Humanities Abbreviation: IPB -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intercultural Peacebuilding Major Program Description The Intercultural Peacebuilding seeks to refine and mold the divine potential of BYU–Hawaii graduates to influence peace for the good at home, in the workplace, in communities and throughout the world. It not only emphasizes theories of harmony, cross cultural leadership, and conflict transformation but also highlights the spiritual components of these areas such as forgiveness and reconciliation by drawing on a broad range of theories and techniques from the academic disciplines of anthropology, cultural studies, political science, psychology, history, economics, law and business. A major in intercultural peacebuilding will provide opportunities for employment in careers in the public, private and non-for-profit sectors as an understanding of the theories of conflict and sustainable community building and development. Students will also gain knowledge and basic skills necessary to navigate the intricacies of intercultural communication and negotiation in whatever their chosen profession may be. One of the primary goals of IPB is the fulfillment of BYU–Hawaii's prophetic mission to accept, adapt, and integrate cultural differences through the transcendent principles of love, faith, and peace combined with a rigorous academic curriculum that directly addresses cross-cultural understanding. As a microcosm of global diversity, BYU–Hawaii provides an exceptional environment for Intercultural Peacebuilding. Mission Statement and Program Outcomes

The mission of the Intercultural Peacebuilding major is to prepare students to serve, work and lead in a global and multicultural environment in a manner that will contribute to the establishment of peace and harmony in and among nations, communities, and homes. IPB graduates will, upon graduation: • Effectively understand cultural difference and conflicts • Think critically and empathetically • Employ skills such as mediation, facilitation and research to develop solutions to real world

problems • Articulate and sustain views through verbal and written discourse • Be well prepared to enter graduate school or employment.

Career Options

A major in Intercultural Peacebuilding provides a rigorous degree that prepares students for graduate professional programs in conflict resolution, law, public administration, diplomacy, development, counseling, as well as for graduate academic programs in fields such as peacebuilding, anthropology, reconciliation studies and other interdisciplinary programs. As a terminal degree, the major prepares highly desirable and competent mediators, facilitators, counselors, foreign service officers, NGO workers, professional consultants, human resources and government administrators, teachers, and workers in fields and professions where cultural interaction and differences are significant.

Section 2 – Overview (Support)

General Education Category: Either Arts & Humanities or Professional Studies (Dr. John Bell has indicated that it would be applicable to allow for

foundational language studies to be counted in two categories, and it has the Dean’s Council’s endorsement and support)

Summary:

Modular Minors in Foundational Languages

The Foundational Language Study Minor will include the following languages

offered on our campus: ASL, CHIN, JPN, FREN, MAOR, SAMN, SPAN, TONG,

WLNG

Rationale:

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) details the benefits, supported by research, of language learning: supports academic achievement, provides cognitive benefits to students, and affects attitudes and beliefs about other cultures (https://www.actfl.org/advocacy/what-the-research-shows). It has also been an essential part of the General Education Program in most universities. While the new modular GE program BYUH is implementing does not make it mandatory to study languages, the World Languages Program of BYU Hawai‘i would like to continue to encourage language study as an option of the General Education requirements.

To reap the above mentioned benefits and to uphold the purpose and integrity of language study as part of the GE, it is proposed that in choosing language study to fulfill the GE study on our campus, students must at least take four (4) language courses from a combination of any languages and levels offered on our campus not yet explored or acquired by the students. At least one of the courses must be 202 or above.

The following are the main factors justifying its implementation:

to be consistent with the 15 credit hours of most of other modular minors on campus (4 language courses)

to ensure the minor’s spirit in expanding the learning experience on this campus (credits may not be tested out)

to achieve the depth of a single disciplinary and its epistemology (one must be at least 202 level)

to significantly increase the marketability of students (to study multiple languages in any combination tailored to individual students’ own interest and existing levels of competency in languages)
