Leach never coached for the Cougars but studied and watched the storied teams of the early ‘80s under LaVell Edwards. Bronco Mendenhall and the Cougars have won five straight season openers and are looking for a sixth. All but one of those season-opening victories have been over a BCS program, including the last three over BCS teams. Opening its season for the fourth time against a Pac-12 foe under Mendenhall, BYU looks to improve to 3-1 when playing a Pac-12 opponent in the season opener. BYU enters the season with a senior quarterback in Riley Nelson. The last 11 senior starting signal callers have put together a 117-23-2 record since 1977, a winning percentage of .831. That’s an average of almost 11 wins per season. Steve Sarkisian led BYU to an NCAA record 14 victories in 1996. Ty Detmer and Kevin Feterik tied for the lowest win total in a senior season, still nabbing eight victories apiece. Washington State also has a senior quarterback in Jeff Tuel. BYU wide receiver Cody Hoffman has a reception streak of 19 games and counting, the 21st longest streak in the nation. Washington State wide receiver Marques Wilson has caught a pass in 24 straight, tied for the ninth-longest streak. WSU outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons played linebacker at BYU from 1993-96 and later coached as a graduate assistant under LaVell Edwards. Both BYU and Washington State have at least one player on the following award watch lists: Biletnikoff (WR - BYU Hoffman/WSU Wilson), Butkus (LB - BYU Kaveinga/WSU Long), Lombardi (Line or LB - BYU Hansen, Van Noy/WSU Long), Maxwell (Outstanding Player - BYU QB Nelson/WSU WR Wilson), Nagurski (Best Defensive Player - BYU Van Noy/WSU Long), Davey O’Brien (QB - BYU Nelson/ WSU Tuel) BYU also has players on the following watch lists: Doak Walker (RB - Alisa), Outland (Lineman - OL Hansen) and Ray Guy (P - Stephenson) while Washington State features a Lou Groza honoree (PK - Furney). WASHINtON StAte 2011 ReCAPThe Cougars doubled their win total from 2010 to 2011 with a 4-8 record, with two wins in Pac-12 play. Washington State won three of its first four games, including its conference opener on the road against new conference member Colorado 31-27. WSU, however, would struggle from there on out, winning just one game the remainder of the season, eventu-ally leading to the hiring of new head coach Mike Leach for the 2012 season. Despite the struggles to winning the Cougars still had a potent offense, finish-ing the year No. 9 in passing yards, scoring nearly 30 points per game. That will serve as a good baseline for Mike Leach and his famed “Air Raid” offense to build on in the upcoming season in Pullman.

WSU COUGARS 2012 OUtLOOKThe expectations rise in 2012 for WSU with Coach Leach at the helm of a team rich with talent but lack-ing in winning experience. Leach will look to change that as his 84-43 record as a head coach will be put to the test. The BYU alumni spent 10 seasons lead-ing Texas Tech, going 7-6 in his inaugural season,

putting together a winning season each and every year as coach of the Red Raiders, including an 11-2 campaign in 2008 with a Big 12 title.

WSU returns several key playmakers, including se-nior quarterback Jeff Tuel and promising sophomore signal caller Connor Halliday. Tuel was injured for most of 2012 and Halliday passed for 960 yards and nine touchdowns in four games, inlcuding one start.

The Cougars return 14 starters (6 off/6 def/2 sp). WSU’s best wide receiver, 6-foot-4, Marquess Wilson returns as a junior. Wilson has had back-to-back 1,000 receiving-yard seasons, including catching 82 passes for 1,388 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2011.

CoUGarS fInISH 2011 SeaSon WItH 10 WInS aGaInPlaying its first season as an independent program, BYU finished a unique and challenging year with familiar results, 10 wins, a bowl victory and thrilling finishes.

After finishing the regular season with nine wins, BYU matched up against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane for its first-ever trip to the Armed Forces Bowl. The Cougars relied on defense, special teams and the playmak-ing ability of its offensive leaders en route to its 10th victory of the year. BYU’s bowl victory exemplified the evolution of a team relying on grit and determination over the course of a truly unique season heading into uncharted territory as an independent program.

BYU’s team underwent several changes throughout the year and saw drastic improvements, especially to the offense. In BYU’s first five games before Nelson took over at quarterback, BYU was ranked No. 78 in third-down conversions, converting 38.96 percent (30/77). When Nelson took over, the Cougars were No. 1 in the nation over the next seven games. In October BYU converted 66.00 percent (33/50) and in November converted 70.37 percent (19/27). Overall, BYU improved to end the season No. 5 overall on third downs at a rate of 51.31 (98/191).

Averaging just 18.2 points per game the first five games of the season, BYU went on to average 37.5 for the final eight games. The run game improved as well, averaging 94.4 yards on the ground in the first five and then more than doubling that average for the remaining eight games, going for 201.5 yards per game.

Defensively, BYU saw consistent effort and tough, physical play on that side of the ball. The Cougars finished with the No. 13 ranked overall defense, allowing 312.9 total yards per game. Always a focal point, the run-stopping effort held opponents under 100 total yards rushing eight times on the season and allowed less than 40 yards three times. BYU’s pass efficiency defense was also very good, finishing No. 15, allowing a rating of 112.58. The Cougars held five teams to less than 150 passing yards. The red zone defense was a big factor in keeping points off the board, allowing opponents to score touchdowns on just 44.4 percent of their trips inside the red zone, tied for the fifth-best mark in the nation.

noteS from BYU’S LaSt GameWith no timeouts left and 11 seconds remain-ing in the game, quarterback Riley Nelson faked spiking the ball to stop the clock and instead threw to an open Cody Hoffman for the game-winning touchdown to give BYU a 24-21 win over Tulsa in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.•BYU won its third bowl game in a row for the

first time in program history, doing so in three con-secutive years and in three different bowl games.

•hoffman’s three receiving touchdowns set an armed Forces Bowl record and tied a BYU bowl record originally set by Clay Brown in the 1980 Holiday bowl against SMU and then tied last year by Hoffman in the New Mexico Bowl. Hoff-man’s six TDs is also a BYU career bowl record.

•hoffman tallied three touchdowns, eight re-ceptions and 122 yards, his fifth 100-yard game of the season and sixth of his career.

•BYU has held its opponents to 14 points or fewer in the first half in 12 of 13 games this season.Tulsa had 14 points in the first half.

•the cougar defense held tulsa to just 37 yards rushing for the game, 168 yards below its season average. It’s the eighth time in 13 games a BYU opponent has been held below 100 yards rushing.

InDePenDenCe: Year tWo2011 was the Cougars inaugural year as an independent. BYU went 10-3 and won its fifth bowl game in six years. The team played teams from the SEC, Pac-12, Big 12, Conference USA, Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West. The Cougars had all 13 games televised, including 12 to a national audience, 11 of which were featured on the ESPN family of networks. BYU had five on ESPN, four on ESPN2 and two on ESPNU. In 2012, BYU ups the ante with a more difficult schedule, featuring a road game at fellow independent Notre Dame along with three teams from the Pac-12 and matchups against the ACC, WAC and MW. To date BYU has five games scheduled to air on the ESPN family of networks along with one on NBC and another on BYUtv, all nationally televised games. The Cougars have future games scheduled with Wisconsin, West Virginia, Nebraska, Notre Dame, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Texas, UCF, Houston, Washington State, Boise State, Utah and Hawai’i.

fLaG BearerSBYU has a tradition of selecting a player before each game to run the team flag onto the field. In 2008, the team implemented a new tradition - the alumni flag. The team selects a former Cougar to carry out the alumni flag, along with the chosen current player who runs out with the current team flag. Both flags are white with a blue “Y” logo. The team flag has been signed by each member of the team, while the alumni flag has been signed by former BYU payers. In 2011, the team added a special teams flag, donned by a vintage BYU logo adopted by the special teams, following the same protocol as the team flag with an exemplary special teams player being chosen to carry it each week.

team CaPtaInSSelected by their peers, quarterback Riley Nelson, linebacker Brandon Ogletree and running back David Foote have been named as team captains for the 2012 season. The three seniors are all new captains for the 2012 season. The threecaptains also represent the offense, the defense and special teams. Nelson will serve as the offense’s captain, Ogletree for the defense and Foote for special teams. Nelson led BYU to a 6-1 record as a starter at quarterback last year. Ogletree led the Cougars in tackles in 2011 and Foote is a former walk-on who has averaged 9.5 yards per carry out of the backfield in his career.

LaVeLL eDWarDS StaDIUmLaVell Edwards Stadium with its 63,470-seat capacity is home to BYU football. Originally Cougar Stadium, it was built in 1964 and seated 45,000. It was expanded in 1982 to seat 65,000 permanent seats before official capacity became 64,045 after refurbishing the middle of the east section. The capacity now sits at 63,470 due to accomidations for wheelchair access. For the 2012 season the stadium will feature new video walls and LED ribbons on the north and south end zone stands. Traditionally the Cougars play well at home. In fact, BYU is tied for No. 13 nationally since 2006 with 33 home wins in that time span.Stadium record: 211-65 (.764)2011 stadium record: 6-1 (.857)Under Mendenhall: 37-6 (.860)

mISSIonSBrigham Young University is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The missionary emphasis of the Church is perhaps one of its most recognized characteristics. Since the organiza-tion of the Church in 1830, over one million missionaries have served.

The Church operates 347 missions around the world in 145 nations speaking 164 languages. More than 53,000 missionaries representing the Church are serving proselytizing missions in 330 missions around the world. Seventy-five percent of the Church’s proselytizing missionaries are young men between the ages of 19 and 26. A substantial number of young women and older couples also serve proselytizing missions. Mission-aries work long hours—seven days a week for two years or 18 months for women and couples—teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and participating in community service.

There are currently 38 missionaries from the football team serving in 17 different countries. Members of the current team cover six of the seven continents around the globe and speak six different languages.

fIreSIDeSThe BYU football team participates in hour-long devotionals prior to six games this season. These devotionals are referred to as “firesides” and are intended to help players, coaches and those who attend strengthen or gain a knowledge of our purpose here on earth. Firesides typically include a musical number from members of the team and talks from selected players, along with Holly and Bronco Mendenhall.

1 BYU was No. 1 in the nation in third-down conversions for the remainder of the season after Riley Nelson was the starting quarterback. Coming into the fifth game of the season in 2011, BYU was No. 78 in third-down conversions and ended the season No. 5 overall.

5.4 Michael Alisa averaged 5.4 yards per carry in 2011. He finished the season with 85 carries for 455 yards and three touchdowns. Through the first five games however, Alisa had just three rushes for two yards and he did not play in the Armed Forces Bowl due to injury.

19 Wide receiver Cody Hoffman has caught a pass in 19 consecutive games for BYU, dating back to mid way through his freshman season. He has caught a ball in 25 of 26 career games. Hoffman’s streak is the 21st longest streak in the nation.

23.5 The Cougars averaged 23.5 first downs per game in 2011, tied for No. 19 in the nation. BYU totaled 159 first downs through the air, 123 on the ground and 24 via penalties to total 306 first downs on the season.

405.7 BYU averaged 405.7 total yards in 2011. 245.4 of them came through the passing game and 160.3 were chewed up in the rushing attack. They also averaged 30.1 points per game and scored 49 touchdowns during the season.

#12 jd Falslev, WrA third down target playing in the slot most times. Falslev had 31 receptions for 330 yards and three touchdowns in 2011. Never afriad to go over the middle, Falslev has terrific hands and an ability to find holes in the defense.#80 Marcus Mathews, te/WrMathews was the top tight end target in 2011 with 27 catches, 299 yards and one touchdown. After bulking up in the offseason, Mathews will look to build on his sophomore year as go-to target.#5 Iona Pritchard, rB/FBExpected to be a major contributor in 2011, Pritchard was sidelined for the entire year after suffering a broken leg during a fall camp scrim-mage. Pritchard is healthy and ready for a role in 2012 similar to former Cougar and NFL player Mansase Tonga, a big back with a combo of size and speed with great hands.#75 Braden Brown, olA converted tight end, Brown is now a senior leader at offensive tackle on the line. Brown has started 26 consecutive games for BYU. He was a 2011 Phil Steele All-Independent second teamer.#27 david Foote, rBAlways known for coming up with a big run every time he is on the field, Foote has four runs of over 20 yards in his career, including a 56-yarder at Hawai’i. His 9.5 yards per carry average for his career is something that can’t be ignored. The senior captain will look to be more of a full-time contributor in 2012.

tHe BYU offenSe•the offense returns 7 starters, 23 lettermen and 78 percent of its scoring output. The Cougars return

47 percent of their rushing yards, 54.5 percent passing yards, 78.2 percent passing yards, 49 percent total offense and 76.4 percent of the total scoring.

•BYU is starting a senior quarterback in riley nelson, and has another senior in the wings if nec-cessary with james lark. Should Lark step in, the product of St. George is expected to continue the senior tradition.

•look for BYU’s bigtime wide receivers . . . because they are big. The wide receiver tandem of Cody Hoffman, 6-foot-4, 215 pounds and Ross Apo, 6-foot-3, 207 pounds, accounted for 95 receptions, 1,396 yards and 19 total touchdowns last year. Hoffman led the way with 61 catches, 943 yards and 10 touch-downs and Apo was right behind with nine touchdowns of his own.

•the third down machine jd Falslev was a clutch receiver in third down situations in 2011, catching 12 third-down conversion balls. Falslev totaled 31 receptions for 330 yards and two scores.

•a renewed emphasis on nutrition has helped the offensive line transform from last year to 2012. BYU’s big men checked in at an average of over 315 pounds in 2011. Through a dedicated conditioning and nutrition program started in the spring, the line in 2012 tips the scale at about 292 pounds. The Cougars hope the more athletic line will provide a bigger punch in the run game and give better protection.

•another left handed dual-threat quarterback takes the field in 2012 with Nelson. The southpaw will look to live up to BYU’s most famous lefty quarterback Steve Young. Young started the ‘82 and ‘83 seasons for the Cougars, putting together a 1983 senior season with 3,902 yards passing and 444 yards rushing. That season he threw for 33 touchdowns and rushed for another eight. He is second in quarterback rushing yards at BYU with 1,084. Nelson is third with 662.

•BYU has not been shut out in 101 straight games dating back to Utah of 2003. In fact that 3-0 loss was the only other time that BYU has failed to get on the scoreboard since 1975.

8 The BYU defense held eight different opponents to less than 300 yards of total offense. Those teams included Ole Miss, No. 21 Texas, Idaho State, TCU, Idaho, New Mexico State, Hawai’i and Tulsa. BYU held its final six opponents to less than 300 total yards.

13 BYU’s defense ranked No. 13 in the nation in 2012. Allowing just 312.9 yards per game, the Cougars were consistent and proved to be stingy on the defensive front. BYU held teams to just 112 yards on the ground and 200.9 in the air.

16 In the red zone, BYU allowed just 16 touchdowns, the fifth best mark in the nation. BYU al-lowed touchdowns just 44.4 percent of the time when opponents got into the red zone. The Cougars red zone defense ranked No. 11, allowing 16 touchdowns and 10 field goals.

20.4 The number of points allowed by the 2011 defense which returns seven starters. BYU held seven opponents to less than 20 points. The Cougars held three different opponents to one score or less.

91.2 In BYU’s 10 victories for the 2011 season, the defense held opponents to an average of 91.2 yards on the ground. The Cougars held eight opponents to less than 100 yards rush-ing in a year where they gave up an average 112 yards on the ground during the season.

#7 Preston hadley, dBAfter finishing the 2011 season leading the team with 14 pass breakups, Hadley looks to continue as a senior leader. Hadley will lock down the boundary corner position again after logging 51 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry.#6 jordan johnson, dBThe redshirt sophomore played in all 13 games of 2011. Johnson picked off two passes, returning one for 42 yards. He totaled 16 tackles on the year and notched one pass breakup. Johnson will play the field corner position.#1, joe Sampson, dBJoining the Cougars in 2011 as a JUCO transfer was Joe Sampson. Sampson, a 5-foot-10, 203 pounder played at corner, safety and as the fifth defensive back at the nickel position. Sampson will probably have a larger role in 2012 as a prob-ably starter at free safety and big contributor as a nickel back.#2 Spencer hadley, lBHadley moved from inside linebacker where he played in all 13 games of 2011, including one start, to outside for the 2012 season. Hadley was productive with 45 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one interception, returned 48 yards. Had-ley adds even more athleticism to one of BYU’s strongest position groups.#55 eathyn Manumaleuna, dlA four-year starter, Manumaleuna will be another anchor for a stout defensive line. The 6-foot-2, 288 pounder can play at all three defensive line positions and provides a wealth of experience to a senior-laden line. Manumaleuna totaled 33 tackles in 2011.#47 ezekiel ansah, lB/dlOne of the most amazing athletes to come through the program, Ansah provides a serious threat as a pass rusher. A former 200-meter track athlete, the 6-foot-6, 270-pounder provides a near unheard of combination of size and speed on the edge. A native of Ghana, Ansah never played football before joining the Cougars. He has had to learn the game of football over the past three years but as a senior has figured it out.#5 alani Fua, lBFua has unique length and speed at 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds from the outside backer position. His pass rush ability will help to disrupt offenses as he looks to continue to grow in his role.

tHe BYU DefenSe•defensively, finished the 2011 season ranked no. 13 in overall defense. BYU allowed 312.9 total yards per game and held eight different teams to less than

300 total yards for the season, including its final six opponents. With seven returning starters on the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars plan to improve upon that number in 2012.

•For BYU, a low jersey number on defense means business. The numbers 1-9 on defense are all significant contributors. No. 1 Joe Sampson may start at free safety or as the fifth defensive back in the nickel formation. No.’s 2, 3, 4 are three of the four possible starters at linebacker with No. 2 Spencer Hadley and No. 3 Kyle Van Noy on the outside and No. 4 Uona Kaveinga on the inside. No. 5 is linebacker Alani Fua who should see significant reps with Hadley at the outside linebacker position. No. 6 and No. 7, Jordan Johnson and Preston Hadley, respectively, will lock down the corner positions and No. 9 Daniel Sorensen will man the KAT safety position.

•the cougars will feature good size at the safety position. Starting KAT safety Daniel Sorensen checks in at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and looks to lay the wood on any opponents reaching the secondary. Sorensen started all 13 games in 2011, totaling 61 tackles, good for third on the team. At times right next to him will be another hard-hitting safety in sophomore Craig Bills, a 6-foot-2, 209-pounder. Bills earned the nickname “The Human Missile” on special teams and playing in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2009, including one start at safety.

•Watch for some loose change with a lot of nickel defense. BYU plans to feature a lot of nickel defense, or a 2-4-5 format, using two down lineman and five defensive backs. The nickel defense will probably feature a combination of Johnson, Hadley, Sampson, Sorensen, Mike Hague and Bills as the six defensive backs rotating five positions. Against an expected pass-happy Washington State team, the Cougars nickel look will get plenty of work.

•Going from inside linebacker to outside linebacker junior Spencer Hadley adds some more athleticsm and experience to BYU’s outside linebacking group. Had-ley played in all 13 games as an inside linebacker in 2011 and started one game, at Texas. Hadley, a 6-foot-1, 227 pounder out of Connell, Wash. will play along side Van Noy, Kaveinga and Brandon Ogletree to help keep BYU’s defense stout as one of the strongest position groups on the team.

•Stopping the run is often a theme and BYU is pretty good at it. The Cougars finished season ranked No. 19 in rushing defense, allowing just over 112 rushing yards per game. BYU’s run-stopping effort held opponents under 100 total yards rushing eight times on the season and allowed less than 40 yards three times.

•the cougars don’t just stop the run, their pass defense is good too. BYU’s pass efficiency defense finished 2011 at No. 15, allowing a rating of 112.58. BYU held five teams to less than 150 passing yards. The Cougars racked up 56 pass breakups, the most since 1998, to land the No. 11 ranked pass breakup defense. The Cougars had two players tie for the ninth-best mark nationally, defensive backs Corby Eason and Preston Hadley had nine pass breakups apiece.

14 BYU ranked No. 14 in kickoff average for the 2011 season with a 66.04 yard average. Kicker Justin Sorensen helped the Cougars out with 67 kickoffs for 4,465 yards, including 17 touchbacks.

48 Sorensen was also BYU’s placekicker and knocked in a perfect 48 of 48 PATs on the year to ensure the extra point. He was one of 14 kickers that was perfect on PATs with at least 45 attempts.

1998 Kick returner Cody Hoffman ran a touchdown back 93 yards for a score against UCF. It was the first time a Cougar has returned a kickoff for a touchdown since Mike Rigell did it in 1998 against Hawai’i.

With an emphasis on special teams, the 2011 squad adopted an “old school” Cougar logo to represent the special teams. The Cougar head with the cap became the face of the team, don-ning special teamers practice gear along with the special teams flag carried out each game by a selected special teams player.

#96 reed hornung, dSA distant relative of legendary utility player, Paul Hornung, Reed has been BYU’s deep snapper for the past two seasons and looks to cap off his senior year with another consistent effort in 2012. Originally from Minnesota, Hornung came from Snow College and has handled all the snapping duties since his sophomore season. Along with snapping, Hornung made a big play in the 2011 Armed Forces Bowl on punt coverage, distrupt-ing Tulsa’s punt returner just enough to cause a fumble. On the ensuing play the Cougar offense scored a touchdown with just seconds remain-ing before the half. BYU would go on to win on another last second touchdown. A former walk-on player, Hornung totaled two tackles in 2011, including one solo tackle.

During his seven seasons as the head coach at Brigham Young University, Bronco Mendenhall has returned the Cougars to the ranks of the nation’s top teams. Taking over a BYU program in 2005 that was coming off three losing seasons, Mendenhall has guided his teams to seven straight bowl invitations, two outright conference championships and regular national top-25 rankings. The Cougars finished their first season as a football independent in 2011 with a 10-3 record and No. 25 final ranking to finish nationally ranked for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

Under his leadership, BYU has earned a 66-24 (.733) re-cord over the past seven seasons to rank No. 15 in total wins among all teams in the nation during that span. The Cougars have received seven straight bowl invita-tions for the first time since a string of 17 consecutive bowls invitations from 1978 through 1994. Mendenhall is the only coach in BYU football history to take his first seven teams to a bowl game.

Mendenhall has led BYU to bowl wins in five of the last six seasons to become the first Cougar teams to ever win five bowls in a six-year span. Nationally, BYU is one of only seven programs to win five bowl games in the last six seasons. The Cougars have also won 10 or more games in five of the past six seasons and five of Mendenhall’s seven seasons overall. In fact, only four programs have had more 10-win seasons over the past seven years.

BYU’s success under Mendenhall is also evident in the national rankings and NCAA statistics. BYU has fin-ished ranked in the top 25 in the various national statistical categories 88 times in the past seven seasons (46 offense, 32 defense, 9 special teams, 1 misc.). The Cougars have achieved 55 top-15 statistical rankings, 37 top-10 rankings and 19 top-5 rankings in that span. The Cougars have also been ranked in the top-25 polls during each of the past six seasons and finished ranked No. 12 following the 2009 season -- the program’s highest final ranking since finishing No. 5 in 1996.

Another hallmark of Mendenhall’s program has been the emphasis on balance and priorities in the many other facets of life outside of football. Reflecting that emphasis, BYU consistently received the most academic all-conference honorees each season as a conference member is tied for third nationally for Academic All-Ameri-ca recipients over Mendenhall’s seven seasons at the helm. Seven Cougar student-athletes have been named ESPN Academic All-Americans in that span. Among all FBS schools only Penn State and Nebraska have had more during that period.

Mendenhall also serves as the team’s defensive coordinator. The Cougars had the nation’s No. 13 defense in 2011 to help BYU become one of only 11 programs to receive a final Top 25 overall team ranking in at least one of the two major polls during five of the past six seasons. BYU is one of only nine teams to do so in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
