Some Big News!
Duke Of Edinburgh 1921-2021
You may have all heard the sad news that Prince Philip - Duke of Edinburgh has passed away. On the 9thApril, Buckingham Palace released the following statement; "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen
announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. HisRoyal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made indue course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss". Aged 99, two monthsbefore his 100th birthday, the Duke was the longest-serving royal consort in British history. In private, the
Queen described her husband's death as "having left a huge void in her life".
During his life, the Duke of the Edinburgh served in the Second World War and was awarded the Greek WarCross of Valour for his participation in the Battle of Crete. He was also mentioned in dispatches for his serviceduring the Battle of Cape Matapan, where he saved his ship from a night bomber attack by spotting the enemy
vessel.
Although Prince Philip gained his royal title due to his marriage, he was actually already a prince by birth.Philip was born to Prince Andrew, a son of King George I of Greece, and Princess Alice. He was the youngest
child of the couple and was their only son.He had four older sisters, Princess Margarita, Princess Theodora, Princess Cecilie and Princess Sophie, whohave all passed away. Princess Sophie died in 2001. When he was an infant, his family was exiled and he
ended up in the UK. On February 28, 1947, Philip became a British subject, renouncing his right to the Greek andDanish thrones and taking his mother’s surname, Mountbatten.
His marriage to Princess Elizabeth took place in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947. The couple thenwent on to have four children. The couple’s first child, Prince Charles, was born in 1948. He was joined by
Princess Anne in 1950, Prince Andrew in 1960 and then Prince Edward in 1964.As of 2021, Prince Philip and the Queen have eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
