Charity & Development Appeal
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said,
“If you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him,
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. ~ Mark 1: 40-42
Today’s Gospel reminds us of the awesome healing power of Jesus. Wouldn’t it be great to have that same healing power? We may not be able to physically touch someone as Jesus did and witness instant healing; but we do have the power to help change lives.
Every gift you make to the Charity & Development Appeal helps to bring transformational change to others. Your CDA gift helps children find stable, loving foster and adoptive families through Catholic Charities. Senior citizens receive assistance and care through Foundation for Senior Living. Catechists receive training and resources through Diocesan programs. Deacons and seminarians receive financial support and formation to serve parishes in our Diocese.
You can be the heart and hands of Jesus with your gift to the CDA. To learn more, go to dphx.org/cda. Take a pledge card and envelope, and make your gift to the CDA today. Bless you – your gift gives hope to others.

Journey to the Foot of the Cross: 10 Things to Remember for Lent
By Bishop David L. Ricken of Green Bay, Wisconsin, former chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/lent/journey-to-the-foot-of-the-cross-10-things-to-remember-for-lent.cfm
1. Remember the formula. The Church does a good job capturing certain truths with easy-to-remember lists and formulas: 10 Command-ments, 7 sacraments, 3 persons in the Trinity. For Lent, the Church gives us almost a slogan—Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving—as the three things we need to work on during the season.
2. It’s a time of prayer. Lent is essentially an act of prayer spread out over 40 days. As we pray, we go on a journey, one that hopefully brings us closer to Christ and leaves us changed by the encounter with him.
3. It’s a time to fast. With the fasts of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, meatless Fridays, and our personal disciplines inter-spersed, Lent is the only time many Catholics these days actually fast. And maybe that’s why it gets all the at-tention. “What are you giv-ing up for Lent? Hotdogs? Beer? Jelly beans?” It’s al-most a game for some of us, but fasting is actually a form of penance, which helps us turn away from sin and to-ward Christ.
4. It’s a time to work on disci-pline. The 40 days of Lent are also a good, set time to work on personal discipline in general. Instead of giving some-thing up, it can be doing something positive. “I’m going to exercise more. I’m going to pray more. I’m going to be nicer to my fami-ly, friends and coworkers.”
5. It’s about dying to yourself. The more serious side of Lenten discipline is that it’s about more than self-control – it’s about finding aspects of yourself that are less than Christ-like and letting them die. The suffering and death of Christ are foremost on our minds during Lent, and we join in these mysteries by suffering, dying with Christ and being resurrected in a purified form.
6. Don’t do too much. It’s tempting to make Lent
some ambitious period of personal reinvention, but it’s best to keep it simple and focused. There’s a reason the Church works on these mysteries year after year. We spend our entire lives growing closer to God. Don’t try to cram it all in one Lent. That’s a recipe for failure.
7. Lent reminds us of our weakness. Of course, even when we set simple goals for ourselves during Lent, we still have trouble keeping them. When we fast, we realize we’re all just one meal away from hunger. In both cases, Lent shows us
our weakness. This can be painful, but rec-ognizing how helpless we are makes
us seek God’s help with renewed urgency and sincerity.
8. Be patient with your-self. When we’re confronted with our own weakness during Lent, the temptation is to get angry and frustrated. “What a bad person I am!” But that’s the wrong lesson. God is calling us to be patient and to see our-selves as he does, with uncondi-tional love. 9. Reach out in charity. As we experience weakness and suffering during Lent, we should be renewed in our com-passion for those who are hun-
gry, suffering or otherwise in need. The third part of the Lenten
formula is almsgiving. It’s about more than throwing a few extra dollars in
the collection plate; it’s about reaching out to others and helping them without question as a way of sharing the experience of God’s uncondi-tional love.
10. Learn to love like Christ. Giving of ourselves in the midst of our suffering and self-denial brings us closer to loving like Christ, who suffered and poured himself out unconditionally on the cross for all of us. Lent is a journey through the desert to the foot of the cross on Good Friday, as we seek him out, ask his help, join in his suffering, and learn to love like him.

Dear Parishioners,
On behalf of all the volunteers of Corpus Christi Saint Vincent de Paul, we want to thank you for your generous donations during the first quarter of our fiscal year 2018.
With your help, during this period we were able to assist 546 adults and children with partial rental for 32 families and utilities for 28 families, thereby keeping a roof over their heads with water and electricity flowing. Our contributions for these items amounted to over $13,000.
In addition, we were able to distribute 160 boxes of food mostly from your donations. The current store value for a food box is $70 and provides a week of meals for two people. This means that all donations of food, net of what was purchased, contributed roughly $11,200 worth of food for those in need.
Our dedicated volunteers have contributed 1,450 hours in support of the various activities, fund raising and aiding the needy.
Words are inadequate to express our gratitude to the Parish for its continued support of our appeals. God bless you. On behalf of all at SVdP,
Richard N. Hess Treasurer
Pastoral Council
Fr. Chad and the Pastoral Council are looking for one new member. Members act as a voice for the parishioners. They discuss and advise Fr. Chad on the needs and activities of the parish. The council meets monthly (usually on the 2nd Tuesday) from 7pm until about 9pm.
If you feel called and would like to be considered, please send an email to Fr. Chad ([email protected]) highlighting who you are, how long you have been in the parish, which ministries you’ve been involved in, as well as why you are interested and what you think you can bring to the council.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration and investment in your parish.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register? All Catholics living in the Parish area and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs.
Adults 18 and over need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get married, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors.
In order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or to receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program. Registration forms can be filled out in the Parish Office or via our parish website.
How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. A preparation class is also required for parents prior to the child’s Baptism and are offered once a month.
How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive.
How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
