2 C-Global Newsletter 2017

What has your experience of being Rector at CIIT for 19 years been like?It has been an honor to lead CIIT and serve as Rector. It still seems like yesterday when we set out to establish first national IT Institute. My experience has been truly unique and extremely rewarding. I was blessed to work together with some of the finest minds and the most dedicated people in higher education.

Where do you see COMSATS Institute in the next 5 to 10 years?I wish to and definitely will see CIIT listed among the Top 300 World Universities.

What parting message will you give to the students? My advice to all students and children is always to exercise commitment and dedication. The key to success is to persevere. My advice to all is to maintain focus on your ultimate goals in life.

What parting message do you have for the faculty at CIIT?With new leadership come new ideas and new ways of doing things. At the same time, I advise everyone to continue doing what you do best — that is maintain the quality that we have come to expect from CIIT and work hard to excel. Stay true to CIIT core values. Stay abreast with latest knowledge and focus on research and innovation. This is our duty and responsibility as a community of scholars.

What advice would you give to your successor at CIIT?Universities are facing a time of unprecedented change in Pakistan. CIIT is well-positioned not only to respond to tumultuous challenges but to seize new opportunities and I would advise my successor to treat every day as a

new day. Stand resolute in the face of challenges and stay o n t o p o f n e w opportunities as they arise.

How do you fee l about becoming ED? What do you like most about being in this position?I am pleased and honored to b e j o i n i n g a s E D o f t h i s Commission. It is a move up from being an implementer to a policymaker. COMSATS has a lot of potential and I'm glad to have the opportunity to make some valuable and meaningful change.

What is your first priority as the new ED COMSATS? What direction you wish to take COMSATS? I believe COMSATS network has a lot of strength and untapped potential that needs to be exploited. There is a lot that can be and needs to be done. In my term as ED, I would like to work to realize the vision of Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam in true spirit. I will encourage enhanced collaboration among the Centers of Excellence. I am committed to working with thought leaders within the COMSATS member states and worldwide to promote science, research and the central role of higher education institutions in driving new discoveries and technologies in the developing world to bridge the gap with the developed nations.

What and how can CIIT reap benefit of your appointment as COMSATS ED?I assure CIIT of our full support and constant guidance.

Yo u h a v e a l o t o f a c h i e v e m e n t s a n d accomplishments to your name, what or who has been your source of motivation? My dear father remains a constant source of motivation for me.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?Biggest challenge of my career was to make a name and identity for myself in the education sector. When I left civil service to come and work in education I had no prior experience, which is why the first thing I had to achieve was acceptance within the higher education community. Making a name for me and then building my institution up from its humble beginnings to the stature it is today were my biggest challenges.

Exclusive Interview with Executive Director COMSATSThe Editorial team sat down with Dr. S. M. Junaid Zaidi (H.I, S.I) about his nineteen-year long journey as the

founding Rector CIIT and his new appointment as Executive Director COMSATS.

3C-Global Newsletter 2017

If you had not been in higher education, what other line of work would you have chosen? If I hadn't been in higher education, I would have been in primary or secondary education. I have always had a passion for the field of education which is why I had left a fantastic career as a civil servant to be in education. So I would definitely have had been in the education sector one way or the other.

What is the one thing you would like everyone at CIIT to know about you that they probably don't know already? A lot of people do not have any idea about the amount of hard work that I have put in all my life and how I spend majority of my spare time till now to learn new knowledge. When I was younger I used to study fourteen hours a day. I'd come home from college everyday and study an additional eight hours. I still manage to spare

three hours each day to study. I try and read new books. I enjoy reading fiction just as much as reading about religion and science.

Cassandra De Pecol, popularly known as Cassie, has become the first woman to travel to every sovereign nation in the world, and has accomplished that feat in record time. De Pecol left USA on July 14, 2015 and wrapped up her 196-country tour, in a record-breaking eighteen months. She arrived at CIIT, Islamabad campus on December 16, 2016 to commemorate the second anniversary of Army Public School Peshawar tragedy and deliver a keynote address at the International Seminar on Peace, Trust Building and Sustainable Development organized in association with International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) and Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS).

In attendance were numerous international delegates of the World Youth Summit for Peace 2016. Among them was Ms. Tatian Speed, a budding young Canadian musician who uses music as a tool to bring awareness to current world issues. Tatiana played melodies on her guitar that were matched by melodious tunes of rubab played by Waleed Tariq, Management Sciences student. Many other peace ambassadors were present including Miss Heritage World Nepal Roshnee Bhattarai, Miss Ethiopia 2016 Tizita Zerihun, Mr. Ersin Faikzade a Turkish singer and Ms. Katerina Polyakova from Switzerland. CIIT marked 25th International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Looking around campus, what proportion of faculty members and students would you guess are disabled? On a daily basis when you go out, for work, to the gym, to shop, watch a movie, to dine at a restaurant, what percentage of people you see and meet have a disability? These were some hard-hitting questions we asked ourselves and our students, and were troubled by the unanimous response: very few.

Disabled persons comprise the largest minority in the world and generally are the most marginalized and ignored sections of any society. Hence, in a bid to raise much-needed awareness, the International Office, with the support of the 'Paraplegic Centre Peshawar' and 'Helping Hand for Relief and Development' joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on 8th December. The theme of the celebration was 'Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want'- a specific reference to UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among the notables present were Member National Assembly, Mr. Shehryar Khan Afridi ; CEO Paraplegic Center Peshawar , Dr. S. M. Ilyas; Special Athlete and Bronze Medal Winner Special Olympics Los Angles 2015, Ms. Nayab Bibi; and CEO National Forum of Persons with Disabilities, Ms. Abia Akram.

MNA Afridi in his address urged the youth to step up to join hands for the welfare of most marginalized groups of society. Abia Akram, gave a motivational address on rising above disabling challenges. At the conclusion of the seminar, a walk around campus was also organized to generate awareness and empathy among the students and call people to prevent marginalization.

Efforts in-line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals

In celebration of 71 years of UN, CIIT in collaboration with the UN Information Centre (UNIC) organized the launch of the first UN Corner in Pakistan at Junaid Zaidi Library on We d n e s d a y 1 9 t h October, 2016.

Mr. Asim Iftikhar, Director General (UN), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, inaugurated the corner which will serve as repository of newsletters, journals, reports, magazines and books published by UN systems and its partners on national, regional and global issues.

The model of the corner was originally designed by students of CIIT Architecture & Design department in 2015 and soon identical corners will be set up in universities and UN Offices across Pakistan with sponsorship from the Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation (SDC). The launch event was attended by several high officials and diplomats including Mr. Vittorio Camarota, Director UNIC and Mr Benedikt Hurzeler, Deputy-Head SDC. The guests autographed CIIT's UN Wall which was painted by students with specially designed messages that reflect the values of the UN and an exclusive poster exhibition was also showcased at COMSATS Art Gallery (CAG) on the theme of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to raise awareness among students and general public and promote the universal sustainable development agenda.

Career Development C e n t e r ( C D C ) , Islamabad campus, in collaboration with the U n i t e d N a t i o n s Volunteers (UNV) and Aiming Change for Tomorrow (ACT), an I s l amabad-based NGO, conducted an intensive training session for three weeks of March. The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development explicitly recognizes volunteers as key stakeholders to achieve the 17 SDGs and the workshop aimed at encouraging students to be active players in the implementation of the universal goals.

Along with positioning the relevance and importance of volunteering in the context of the post-2015 agenda, the workshop engaged the students in understanding the concept of social action and planning social action projects. The participants were encouraged to identify, plan and offer solutions to problems within the university, community and beyond. They came up with several great ideas for social action projects such as 'indigenous tree plantation campaigns to combat sub-soil contamination and climate change in the country,' 'creating on-campus employment/entrepreneurship opportunities for the local transgender community' and 'minimizing food wastage at university cafeteria by efficiently distributing excess & leftover food among the needy'. All projects received a lot of appreciation by the organizers and will soon be presented to the UNV team for funding and implementation.
