GROWER TIPS THE INDUSTRIES GUIDE TO MARKETING CONTAINER PLANTS - SUMMARY & SUGGESTIONS. The Uniform Weights and Measures Law and Uniform Packaging and Labeling Regulations is monitored by the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) and is enforced by the state or subsidiary government, weights and measures personnel. The purpose of this law is to assist consumers in “comparing similar products” by using uniform and consistent price and quantity information on the product or package and in advertising and signage. MANUFACTURERS’ RESPONSIBILITY It is the responsibility of the container manufacturers to make available the volume measurements (imperial and metric) of their various containers to the grower. WHOLESALE GREENHOUSES’ AND NURSERIES’ RESPONSIBILITY Wholesale Greenhouse and Nursery growers are responsible for supplying the following information to the retailer. DECLARATION OF IDENTITY is the name of the plant material in the container. The terms “assorted annuals” or “assorted perennials” can only be used when the container has more than one annual or perennial. Otherwise the container must identify the particular plant material such as daises or impatiens. DECLARATION OF NET CONTENTS can be described in terms of weight, measurement or volume. Since volume in the past has always been the most popular and standard means of marketing plant material, it has been recommended that volume measurement continues to be the means of declaring the net contents. This is the easiest and most efficient means compared to the alternative options. The law requires the volume of the container be identified in both Imperial measurement (fluid ounces - fl oz, pint - pt, quart - qt, and gallon - gal) and Metric measurement (milliliter - mL, and liter L). Measurement must always be in a minimum of the largest whole measurement. For example, instead of using 24 oz for this measurement the proper measurement would be 1.5 pt. Market Pack contents would be displayed by identifying the volume of the individual cell and then totaling all cells of the pack to arrive at the total pack volume. For example, a 606 pack volume would be displayed as; 6 cells x 2 fl oz (60mL) Total 12 fl oz (360mL). DECLARATION OF RESPONSIBILITY provides the consumer with the vendor, distributor or retailer reporting the Declaration of Identity and Declaration of Net Contents for the accuracy of this information. This information also allows the consumer to compare similar products and pricing. This information must contain the responsible business name, city, state and zip code. This responsibility is not required when the container is grown on the same premise as it is being retailed on. Retailers must determine how to handle this information. Some retailers would want to Declare Responsibility themselves using their retail name and location. Some retailers may want the wholesale grower to provide this information in a fashion such as; Grown for : ABC Garden Center Washington, DC 00000 Grown by : Wholesale Growers Anytown, Anystate 00000 However accomplished, it is the responsibility of the wholesale grower to report this information to the retailer so the retailer in turn will have the information to report to the consumer. Some growers wholesaling to retailers may be required by the retailer to report this information on the pot and some may not. Maryland Plants & Supplies, Inc. recommends that all the required information above should at least be offered on the invoice to the retailer stating “All the required Weights and Measures information is noted on this invoice and it is the responsibility of the retailer to accurately display this information as required by the National Conference on Weights and Measure”. RETAILERS RESPONSIBILITY It is the responsibility of the retailers to make sure all this information is properly displayed to the consumer in order to avoid any penalty. Presentation of the Declarations can be fulfilled by either signage or container labels. Product advertising that includes any pricing must also provide the declaration of net contents. Nursery Supplies blow-molded nursery containers are made from 100 percent high density polyethylene, with sizes ranging from just under aquart all the way to 60 gallons. Whether standard (Custom) or heavy(Olympian) weight, both are durable, flexible and easy on the budget.
Side ribs, flutes, give strength while a unique bottom-edge corrugation design adds further tocolumn rigidity on many of these wide-bottomed containers. Molded-in handles on the toprim on all #5 pots and above insure ease of handling to the field, out of the field, during shipping and at retail.

Originally designed for Pot-in-Pot growing, Grip-Lips evolved into a container series of over 20sizes from one gallon to 25 gallons. The cushioned “Grip-Lip” is possible because of the rim’shollow, forgiving core making handling a comfortable chore.
