Thus, Eddie got SA citizenship at birth although he also has Swiss citizenship through his parents. Our four children have therefore benefitted from both parents as far as nationalities are concerned. An amusing aspect of this is that the children’s British passports indicate the place of birth as East London while their mother’s is London.

Our Family

Lauren is one of six children and was born in London (UK) while her parents were in England for a brief period. She is the only one of her siblings who got British citizenship at birth. Eddie, also one of six, was born in Acornhoek in Mpumalanga. At the time of this birth his parents were missionaries in Mozambique but came over to SA for the birth.

The wedding was blessed by Alan Maker and Martin Lund snr. at St Ninians. Subsequently Eddie was ordained at St Columbas and both his parents’ funeral services took place in our sanctuary.

Our four children were all born in the Eastern Cape and completed their schooling in Fort Beaufort (not Beaufort West) and Grahamstown.

Three of the four are now married and gratefully all have retained their employment thus far despite the corona virus challenges. At the moment two live in the UK, one in Cape Town and one in Pretoria.

Their paths crossed again in 1978 when Eddie, under the auspices of St Columbas was appointed probationer at St Ninians where Lauren was a Sunday School teacher.

Our connection to St Columba'sEddie attended Sunday School and was subsequently confirmed by Jack Dalziel in 1968. Thereafter being part of the youth group was the highlight of his membership and teaching Sunday School with Denise Colley was one of its fruit. Lauren’s connection to St Columbas started with her father John Duley who was Stewardship Director of the Presbyterian denomination and worked with Chris Aitken at the Central Offices.

Richard Clowes took over the programme from John Duley and to date the yearly appeal to reconsider our response to God’s generosity originated with Lauren’s dad.

Lauren’s dad conducted the rst stewardship campaign at St Columbas during the 1970’s.

Roughly 100 new ministers were ordained during Eddie’s tenure. During all this time Lauren has offered ballet lessons in locations varying from church halls, school halls, farm sheds and basically wherever space was available to do pirouttes and grande jetés.

During the 28 years when ministry was taking place in other parts of the country the family spent one year in Geneva where the children went to a French speaking school and Eddie ministered in a local congregation while also studying towards a PhD at Geneva University. The return to St Columbas took place when Eddie was appointed Ministry Secretary of the UPCSA where he was responsible to the selection and training of candidates for the ministry.

Lockdown has made us more sensitive to the importance and relevance of communities and especially our Christian community as being the Body of Christ. We have experienced in a fresh way that our relationship to Jesus cannot be separated from our relationship to members of the Christian Community. We have become more literate in modern technology and have learned to appreciate our ability to communicate with family and children via zoom meetings. How previous generations coped with pandemics without these tools is something that makes us reflect about their hardships.

When we have family zoom meetings with Lauren’s 92 year old mother, she often cautions us to travel home safely. When we explain to her that we are all at home, she listens attentively and then says, “But I still do worry about you having to travel at night!”

Lockdown experiences

Page 13: C h u rch S t Co lu m ba ' s Pres by te ria n · Ou r c o n n e c t i o n t o S t Co lu m b a's Eddie attended Sunday School and was subsequently confirmed by Jack Dalziel in 1968.

It’s been a first for Eddie to preach an on-line sermon and to take part in a virtual funeral. One thing that has proved valuable in preventing a sense of lostness and purposelessness during lockdown has been the discipline of making a list in the morning of all the things that would be good to accomplish during the day. The list includes mundane things like doing some vacuuming to more serious things like accompanying Lauren on a shopping trip. During this time of being confined to one’s homes, the satisfaction of ticking off items that have been accomplished gives one a sense of satisfaction of progress. One of the things on the daily list is to do some reading of importance.

Some home improvements and gardening has been done. As the gardeners of the complex were not present during the initial lockdown, residents of the complex in which we live, gathered together and did hedge clipping, grass mowing, tree trimming and putting the trolley bins on the pavement on the day of the refuse collection. This has brought residents together as never before.

Page 14: C h u rch S t Co lu m ba ' s Pres by te ria n · Ou r c o n n e c t i o n t o S t Co lu m b a's Eddie attended Sunday School and was subsequently confirmed by Jack Dalziel in 1968.

Lauren has been making masks for family and friends. She is also busy with other sewing and knitting projects. At times the home has been filled with the smell of fresh bread coming out of the oven. At other times, to Lauren’s dismay the home has been filled with the odour of petrol or other cleaning materials that have emanated from the garage downstairs where Eddie has spent many hours restoring classic motorcycles.

We have experienced some humorous moments when we had a family birthday celebration shared over zoom. We agreed that we would all prepare a cheese fondue and log on simultaneously and share a fondue from different parts of the country and even overseas. The fondue for the Swiss is the equivalent to the braai for South Africans. We have had family quiz competitions and even renewed contact with people we have not spoken to for a long time.    However, we do look forward to the time when we can greet each other on Sunday mornings and chat over a cup of tea.

AFRICANEEDS A LOVING  HOME

Due to unfortunate circumstances, Africa is looking for a new home. Please consider opening your heart and home to this gorgeous girl.

Africa is a much loved 11 year old, Female, Sterilized German

Shepherd Cross / Mixed Breed who was rescued in her early life from a life of hardship in the townships. Africa is an extremely affectionate dog

who absolutely loves rolling on her back for tummy tickles. She is an active dog who loves being outside chasing lizards and chasing a ball.  She

needs space / exercise. She would be best on her own but would consider        re-homing her with a older male dog.

Family willing to pay towards vet bills and food if needed. If you are

interested in meeting Africa please contact Gerald.
