Statistical Core, The Einstein Aging Study PI: Charles B. Hall (PD: Richard B. Lipton).
National Institute of Aging, Grant # P01 AG03949, 9/1/2004-8/31/2009. 35% LOE. The
Statistical Core is responsible for the quality of data management and analysis for all cores and
projects of this program project that includes several observational cohort studies. The Statistical
Core works to identify cross project analyses of scientific significance, to develop new statistical
methodology appropriate to address Aging Study scientific questions, to develop robust cognitive
test norms, and to identify and distinguish factors that predict age-related cognitive decline from
those that predict dementia-related cognitive decline. Dr. Hall is the director of the Statistical

Role of Genes in Exceptional Longevity in Humans PI: Nir Barzalai. National Institute of
Aging, Grant # P01 AG027734. 04/01/2007-03/31/2012. 10% LOE. The objective of this study
is to identify genes that contribute to exceptional longevity in humans. Dr. Hall will provide
statistical analyses to the confirmatory prospective studies of candidate genes.
Data Coordinating Center for Medical Monitoring of NYC Firefighters and EMS
Personnel Exposed to the World Trade Center Collapse of September 11, 2001. PI: David
Prezant. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Grant # 5-U1O-OH008242,
7/1/2004-6/31/2010, 20% LOE. This grant supports the medical monitoring of New York City
Fire Department Personnel exposed to the collapse of the World Trade Center as well as research
related to the continued health of that cohort. Dr. Hall is the lead statistician for the research.

tissue. Dr. Hall is the statistician for the study.
Changes in Cognitive Performance in Preclinical AD: A Collaborative Analysis. PI: Brent
Small (University of South Florida). AECOM PI: Richard Lipton. National Alzheimer’s
Coordinating Center Project #2008-01 through University of South Florida. 7/1/2008 -
6/30/2009. 2% LOE. The goal of this project is to better understand trajectories of change in the
period prior to the diagnosis of AD by combining data from 5 longitudinal studies of aging and
dementia. Dr. Hall was a statistical consultant.
Clinical Research Curriculum Award. PI: Paul Marantz. National Institutes of Health,
Grant # K30 HL 04110. 5% LOE. 6/1/04-5/31/09. A two-year clinical research training
program, with two complementary components: a didactic curriculum, emphasizing
epidemiology, biostatistics, study design, computer methods, and research ethics; and a
mentored experience in clinical research, leading to the preparation of thesis. Scholars
successfully completing this program will earn a Master of Science degree in Clinical
Research Methods. Dr. Hall supported recent graduates of the program in furthering their
research careers.
Proteomic Prediction of Breast Cancer Risk: A Cohort Study. PI: Tom Rohan. United
States Department of Defense, Grant #BC043301. 3/1/2005-2/28/2009. 7.7% LOE. This case
control study will attempt to identify proteomics markers associated with the development of
breast cancer. Dr. Hall is the primary statistician for the study.
Culture-Fair Dementia Screening. PI: Ellen Grober. National Institute of Aging, Grant # R01
AG017854, 10/1/2002-9/30/2007. 15% LOE. This project addresses the urgent public health
need for a dementia screening program in primary care settings (e.g., HMO's, managed care,
group practices) where racial/ethnic minorities, the fastest growing segment of the older United
States population, receive their medical care. Dr. Hall is the statistician on the study.
Albert Einstein Cancer Center. PI: David Goldman. National Cancer Institute, Grant

Spiritual vs. Educational Intervention on QOL in Low-Income Cancer Patients. 7/1/03-

effects of a psych-educational vs. psycho-spiritual intervention on quality of life and medical
outcome of underserved, late-stage cancer patients. Dr. Hall is the statistician for the study.
Biometry Core, Support for Mental Retardation Research Center (PD: Donald S. Faber)
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Grant #5P30 HD01799, 8/1/2000-
6/30/2005, Competitive renewal being submitted December 2004. 10% LOE. The Biometry Core
of the Kennedy Center provides statistical expertise and collaboration to Center Investigators on
all phases of clinical, observational, and basic science research. This includes guidance on study
design, study conduct, data analysis, and the interpretation and publication of results. Dr. Hall
was a member of the Biometry Core faculty and also gave lectures to investigators.
Competitive Supplement to: HPV & Cervix Neoplasia in a Large, Long Term HIV+
Cohort. PI: Howard Strickler. National Cancer Institute, Grant # R01 CA85178-01S, 2/1/02-
12/31/04. 20% LOE. This competitive supplement proposes broad new research goals that were
unachievable at the time of the original grant, and made possible by the expansion of the
Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) to double its current size: (i) risk factors for incident
cervical dysplasia; (ii) HPV intratype variation and its effects on the natural history of HPV and
dysplasia,; (iii) the association of host HLA genotype with risk of HPV infection, dysplasia, and
their persistence/progression.

Improving Stroke Outcome by Using Quantitative Functional MRI. Patrick and Catherine
Weldon Donaghue Medical Research Foundation, Grant # DF-99-047, P.I.: Song Lai. 5% LOE.
1/01/00-12/31/02. Currently, there is a very short time window during which acute ischemic

stroke patients may be treated successfully with anticoagulants. This project used new
quantitative neuroimaging techniques that identify ischemic penumbrae as well as infacted areas
of the brain in an attempt to expand that time window. Dr. Hall was the statistician for the study.
Private-Public Alliance for Prevention (Domestic Violence) Screening, Outreach, and
Safety for Abused Prenatal Patients. Patrick and Catherine Weldon Donaghue Medical
Research Foundation, Grant # DF 99-200, 2/15/00-2/14/03. P.I.: Howard Bailit. 10% LOE. This
study attempted to improve screening for partner abuse of pregnant by physicians and studies a
structured intervention for abused patients. Dr. Hall was the statistician for the study.
Statistical Methods for Study of Early Phase Dementia. University of Connecticut Center on
Aging, Grant # P60 AG13631. 9/1/99-8/31/00. P.I.: Charles B. Hall. 15% LOE (no salary
support). $20,000. This study developed innovative statistical methods – change point models –
for the study of the natural history of cognitive function in persons who develop Alzheimer’s
disease.
Public-Private Alliance for Prevention (Easy Breathing). Patrick and Catherine Weldon
Donaghue Medical Research Foundation, Grant # DF 97-048A, P.I.: Howard Bailit. 2/15/98-
2/14/02. 25% LOE. This study implemented a pediatric asthma disease management program in
the six primary care clinics in Hartford, CT. The study has shown significant increases in
physician’s compliance with NHLBI guidelines and significant decreases in hospitalization for
children enrolled in the program. Dr. Hall was the lead statistician on the study.
