The Southwest Regional Fly-In - Kerrvll le was Just good. The weather Friday and the start of Saturday was lousy but the late Saturday through Sunday weather turned out great. 168 handled al I the Fl lght I lne operations for Kerrvl I le with over 30 of our chapter members. We put up our blue tent fly down by the FAA Tower and were happy campers for three days. For al I that worked the required shifts the patches wll I be here soon. The RICH GARDNER AWARD for Mechanical Excel lent went to N76384 a Cessna 140 owned by BILL & LINDA PEARSON of San Antonio.
Next year wl 11 again work the Fl lght Line Operations and there Is talk of a Hot Dog Feast Friday Night, so stay tuned.
Addison Alrfalr has also Just been completed with a good turn out of aircraft and people. Thanks to a I I that worked I ong and hard on Addison. The fly-by group were great, the static display was great and the booth with al I its handouts and coffee pot worked wonders on getting the word out about EAA. We wtl I Improve the standard for aircraft protection to the level afforded the show planes next year and at the Ft Worth Atrfest. This means your aircraft wll I be fenced off with at least three foot clearance between that fence (the common people) and your plane. This wll I be maJntalned unless you specify otherwJse. FUN - AT THE KERRVILLE 1987 FLY-IN
The Kerrville fly-in was a successful fun event. Participating members of Chapter 168 enjoyed the task of conducting Flight Line Operations. In the following picture copies of operations, note
iCft .,
___ _____ the "Go" posture in the first picture, in picture two, Ann Asberry is sending a "Breezy" on its way, third picture is of Clair Button getting a "refresher" while on

z Our Chapter h~d its "op-erations tent located next to the portable FAA control tower near the end of the runway. It provided a nice center
with shade and seats for coordination, rest, drinks and conversation. John Crook used his pick up truck to carry all the gear to Kerrville, provide transportation for volunteers and to supply liquid refreshments to those working the flight line .
The weather was good during Saturday and Sunday. Friday afternoon was a bummer with heavy rain and iffy weather predictions which discouraged quite a few from taking a chance and flying in. Mel Asberry flew in, skirting the weather, but still encountered quite a bit of turbulence, Because so many fly-ins were delayed by Friday's weather, the Saturday morning incoming traffic was very heavy. At one time, incoming VFR traffic was so heavy that the FAA had to stop take-offs and notify waiting pilots that there would be at least an hour and fifteen minute delay due to stacked incoming traffic.
The Chapter 168 RICHARDT. GARDNER award for mechanical excellence went to a Cessna 140 (1946) powered by a Continental 85. It was owned by Bill and Linda Pearson of San Antonio. Judges Clair Button and Mel Asberry were so impressed by the plane that their decision was easy to reach.

FUN at Kerrville - continued -
After the awards meeting Saturday night, Chapter 168 members continued their fun with a fellowship get-together. Bravo Sierra and drinks flowed freely. A tape recording of that meeting conversation, Ted Thayer, would have been a lot more interesting and amusing (but less informative) than that of one taken at one of our formal Director's meetings.
Aircraft and people attendence was heavy, but due to the Friday weather, it did not seem to be as great as last year. There were some interesting static displays, one of which was a three cylinder in-line engine, beautifully mounted on a trailer test stand. This interesting engine project was built by an EAA member for fun reasons and with the thought that someone might be interested in developing it further.
Had hoped to list all awards in this issue but the promised list had not yet arrived as this issue went to press. Maybe next issue. At the meet, your editor became acutely aware that you should not stand on a bed of fire ants. Regardless, everything else went well and we had FUN!!
=============================:::...-_ -_-_ ----- ---· ..l. .. . .
A MATTER OF CLARITY
Since June, your editor has attempted to reduce Hangar Echo costs (about $20 per issue) by using front cover pictures reproduced by a standard copier. After receiving some complaints about the front cover picture quality, this issue is going back to the halftone picture process on the front cover. Inside pictures will be the standard copier type unless further membership inputs indicate a desire for other direction.

IT'S IN THE BOOK
Van Sickle's Modern Airmanship, Fifth Edition Edited by John F. Welch - - - - A review by the Hangar Echos Editor
This is an attempt to give you a short review of a book that is over two and one-quarter inches thick and containing over eight hundred and eighty pages. Modern Airmanship has been revised and just placed back in print. All subjects have a nice balance of text and illustrations. It covers aircraft aerodynamics, theory of flight, structures, propulsion, instruments, avionics, atmosphere, weather, medical aspects, basic flight, instrument flying, traffic control, heliocopters and Northwest wilderness flying.
Each subject is nicely covered. If you want greater depth on any one subject, you would have to get a book on that particular item. The book is published by TAB books, and sells for $37.50. Considering the scope, depth and quality of the book, believe it is a good buy for the serious aviation/flying enthusiast.
NEW MEETING TIME - NEW MEETING TIME - NEW MEETING TIME !!!!!!!!!!
Due to the City of Dallas cutting the monies used for supporting community activity centers, they are closing the centers at an earlier hour.
As a result, our regular meetings on the third Thursday will start at 6:30 (six-thirty) p.m. until further notice. The program schedules will be tailored as possible so that members will not miss the "meat" of the program just because they cannot make it on time.
FLIGHT 50
Chapter 168 has received a letter of appreciation for EAA support of the first consecutive flight to all 50 states. As a result of the flight, over $12,000 was donated to the youth activities of the EAA. Income from the trust fund will help provide tuition etc. of youths attending the EAA summer camps.
MISC. COMMENTS FROM MEMBERS
Did you know that door prizes are being given out at our regular monthly meetings? One ticket for coming, extra tickets five for one dollar. Responses to our monthly questionairs indicate that members prefer tools as door prizes. Ernie Ludwick is building a modified Taylor Bird and is now 15% complete, a tandem pusher, all aluinum trigear. Owen Bruce and Jim Rushing are restoring a Luscombe model 8E. Mel Asberry has his Dragonfly 75% complete. Bruce Culver is busy designing a joined-wing, 2 seat motor/glider. Paul Kepner has his Baby Lakes biplane 80% complete.

Reflections by CHRIS KOSAN - After writing my article about Oshkosh, I received many different responses. These comments and conversations have given me more food for thought. One reason Oshkosh is a success is because people with a focus work together. As a Chapter 168 project, many of us worked the flight line at Kerrville. We had a focus and goal to achieve. In spite of sunburned noses and flat tired feet, we had fun doing it. It seems that the amount of enjoyment at both events was proportional to what was contributed.
As a member of Chapter 168's Board of Directors, I've helped on different projects and participated with others putting the newsletter together each month. It's a time to do a little work and share some Bravo Sierra about flying. Any member is welcome to participate is these activities.
Our election of officers is scheduled for this month's meeting. Those running for office have a contribution to make. However, to make this Chapter work, the new officers will need your support and enthusiasm. My Oshkosh dream came true due to planning, work and support. Each of us has an opportunity to give something, and in return, to get something from our Chapter. Are you missing an opportunity?
