The report finds that the Ottawa Census Metropolitan Area(CMA) will experience moderate growth in the coming years, projected at 0.9 percent employment growth in 2016 and 1.9percent in 2017. This is due in large part to increased federalspending. The unemployment rate is projected to fall to 6.0percent by 2017, its lowest rate since 2011.

This regional update is presented in partnership with the OntarioChamber of Commerce and the Credit Unions of Ontario.

When creating an effective communications plan, it’simportant to recognize the difference between strategyand tactics. These two terms are often misunderstood, orworse, used as synonyms.

The strategy (or strategies) Each communications, advertising or media relationscampaign must start first with a clear understanding ofwhat you want to achieve.

Ask yourself, “At the end of all this work, what will weconsider a success?” This helps define your overarchingobjective for the plan.

If we’re crafting a plan for a fictional, hip retail shop, wemight create an objective like this: “We want to increaseour month-over-month revenue with a special sale thatfeatures our unique Ottawa-first stock list.”

Now you can begin to articulate specific goals that will helpachieve the communications objective.

In this case, the goals could look like this:

• Increase sales by $1,450 this month• Feature our unique Ottawa goods in three local media outlets

• Increase the customer email list by 25% Each one of the above bullet points will require the store totake specific communications actions.

The tacticsTactics, in short, are those specific actions you take. Eachcommunications plan requires a unique set of tactics to bedeployed. Ideally, each campaign you launch builds on thesuccessful points of the last efforts your organizationundertook.

If we focus on the goal to “Increase the customer email listby 25%,” we could outline several key actions:

• Inform front line sales team of the promotion• Create an internal contest to see which salespersoncan add the most new additions

• Ensure you ask each customer by using a valueproposition based request (instead of “May I add you to our list?” try “We have a monthly emailnewsletter with special online-only deals. Would you like me to sign you up so you can take advantage of these discounts?”

Only once you’ve articulated your objective, goals andtactics will your communications plan yield betteroutcomes.
